I was actually half way through making a big post detailing point-by-point why I consider Fallout 3 to be a superior game in every regard, as well as calling Oblivion a steaming pile of poop, but then I remembered the fanboy wrath that descended upon me in a thread yesterday when I dared to state my reasons for disliking Oblivion and decided I'm not in the mood for that crap all over again.

I'll just state that Fallout 3 is superior is every category to Oblivion (visuals, gameplay, mechanics, writing, plot, characters, game world, etc.) and leave it at that.
I agree, Fallout is superior in every category you mention, butt have only 2 shortcomings compared to Oblivion.

1 Its not fantasy, there is always something special with swords and magic.
2 Its less fun, several moments in Oblivion made my top ten list of best moment in a game.

finally: playhrough for me so far: Oblivion 3 times
Fallout 2 times

There are just different sensibilities being played to here.

Sci-fi vs. fantasy

Tale of heroism vs. tale of survival

Tolkien-esque world vs. a Serling/Lovecraftian one.

Whichever of those appeal to you more will probably go a long way in deciding what game your prefer.

I think both are good games. And when you've played the PC version of Morrowind and crammed it with loads of incredible PlugIns and mods and used the ingame cheat console to cheat your way into some sweet sweet gameplay, it makes Oblivion all the better. Fallout 3 is really good too, messing around on it is pretty fun.
But I personally prefer Oblivion. I'm not even sure why. I think it's just because it's prequel is such a memorable game for me. I used to be nearly addicted to it, man.

I didn't like Fallout 3 or Oblivion.

Fallout 3 was probably worse though.
What?? AAAGGGGHHHHHH!!!
Yeah? I managed to play Oblivion a lot longer than Fallout 3. Oblivion's true detriment was seeing all of its wasted potential. I could barely play it because so many elements of the game were exceedingly mediocre and I could easily see how they could have been fixed in development. Fallout 3's biggest weakness is that it's basically Oblivion with guns and without the shiny rewards (magic items and whatnot) that Oblivion gave you. Fallout 3 is stark, lifeless, and suffers from all of the same issues that Oblivion did.
