Mass Effect.

Problem solved.
Agreed.
I like the majority of RPGs out there so I can't recommend just one. You'll just have to sift through them all to find the one you like the best, or can get you out of said slump.

Maybe you should try some other sub-genre for a chance... Something that relies on something else than a conversation system, assuming that was what you found exceptional.

Oblivion and Fallout 3 will hardly out-do Fallout 1 and 2. So I suggest you go for something different alltogether instead of trying to find something you'll immediately compare to Fallout games.

It's hard to enjoy any game if you don't play them for what they are, you know.
Eh, I'd say that Oblivion and Fallout 3 outdo the original Fallouts but that's just me.

Oblivion. Best RPG I've ever played. In most others I just do the main quests and a few side quests but in Oblivion I want to do every single quest in the game!
Do you play without Mods?

That was one of the most boring games I had ever played in my entire life before I modded the hell out of it.

Then it was REALLY good.

Terribly unstable...but REALLY good.

I dream of a day where bethesda will catch up to every other game maker in making their games modable while stable. It is the only game I have that modding causes it to lose the stability it kind of had in the first place.

Arcanum was, and is, beautiful. Drog just released the patch he was working on before he quit for good. Anyone who has Arcanum should download the patch and play!

Fantastic game, most enthralling game setting I've ever come across, and each day I deeply hope for the announcement of a true sequel, with equally well-written dialogue, gorgeous music and all that fantastic Victorian architecture in glorious modern day graphics. I mean, in what other game can you see a half-ogre in a three-piece suit wielding modified revolvers fighting elven witches in Victorian dresses?

It's a shame I screwed up my first fantastic save-game (an awesome technology oriented gentleman dwarf) by saving right before an unkillable ogre popped up and I ragequitted.

So yeah, even though it's said many times before: I recommend Arcanum, but patch it, please do. I love how you have a lot more freedom to do things as you please, the gameplay is less rigid than in most modern RPG's.

Except all Infinity Engine games we're fucking beautiful because every background was hand-drawn and the characters, spells and effects etc. carefully and really nicely animated.
Also it wasn't as much work so it left a lot of room for improvements on things like story and quests and all that crap you don't get in games nowadays xD
My thought exactly! The backgrounds are gorgeous at times. And the the spell effects and such I find to be rather pretty! (;
I agree, I found myself more captivated with Planescape's graphics than with a lot of modern-day games.

Get Planescape: Torment in some way, then follow one of various online guides to update the graphics, restore lost content, and make it run more smoothly.

Then truly immerse yourself in some of the best writing in the genre. I'll see you in 2011.

EDIT: Mass Effect is also truly wonderful, combining real-time combat with a KOTOR-like pause system. Dragon Age was one step forward, two steps back, and I'm disappointed with it.

About 2 years ago I managed to get hold of a copy of Fallout 1 and 2. Both are great games but unfortunately ever since then all the other RPGs I've played have seemed a bit rubbish in comparison, even ones I used to love before playing Fallout I just find it difficult to be engaged by them or to take them seriously. Are there any other RPGs that can compare or am I doomed to never enjoy another RPG ever again?
Most of Biowares titles are pretty well done, there are always the Bethesda titles, and the old blizzard games, those are obviously the more popular titles and there are reasons for it...

I struggle to find good RPG's too, most of them being terrible in comparison to the greats (like fallout and the elder scrolls series) but if your willing to face the slow start, the Knights of the Old Republic games are great RPG's, gripping story, and fantastic gameplay :D

I have a similar problem, with a little exception, I played Fallout back in 1997, shortly followed by Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment. You can tell how miserable my RPG gaming life was ever since.
However, there was a few bright spots in it:

Arcanum - Was pretty close but it felt a little inconsistent and unfinished, still it was pretty damn close to the "Original Three".

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - All bugs and linearity issues aside that game was great once you get in your role. Dialogues were sometimes brilliant, especially if you play it as Malkavian (if you can understand what they are and what they say, sometimes you will see the future and true faces of the people you speak with or about).

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic: Sith Lords - If you are Ok with Star Wars don't miss it. Original SWKotOR was a good game too, I just prefer Sith Lords more even though it suffered a great deal from rushed development cycle.

Dragon Age: Origins - Was good, but only as long as you don't try to stray away from a role forced on you by the developers. I wouldn't have problems with that if I wasn't constantly teased to go "rogue" by the game. If you decide to follow the rabbit, DA:O will reward you with good 30-40 (double that if you do all side quests) hours of fun.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer - Yes, an expansion pack, I never liked NvN2, but MotB simply blew my mind away, story wise.

Try Arcanum, Planescape, Baldur's Gate, because they are OLD, and that makes them GOOD. No really they're brilliant, but you could also try Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect and Divinity 2.

I actually tried Fallout 1 and 2, along with an expansion (or whatever it was). I didn't like any of them. Everything was a bit fidgety and unrefined.

I guess I have higher standards :(
Gee, how high are your standards.

I played Fallout 3 to death then bought Oblivion. Couldn't get into it, I was just thinking about Fallout :(
See i was the other way round, most of the time when I was playing Fallout I was thinking of Oblivion. It took me a while to get over the fact that although they, look and feel similar they are actually really different. Also Oblivion is one of my favorite RPG's since it was the first one I really got hooked on!

LOL. SORRY, BUT LOL! Oblivion, best RPG ever?
Maybe on opposites day, amirite?

But yeah, if you liked fallout 1 and 2, 3 won't solve it- they have different feels. It's good, but it's not the same.
I would recommend Morrowind, but I think the same effect would apply, although it is cheap these days, so it could be worth a shot.
Arcanum feels a lot like the fallout games (same team, same engine by the feel of it), so I'd try that.

I'd recommend Oblivion (it is my honest opinion that the uberfans will realize eventually that in the end it's a better game than Morrowind even though it's cool to hate it because it did so well. I give it ten years).

Demon's Souls is a pretty amazing game, doing things that really no other game is doing these days. Get it now before the servers shut down in a year (I cringe at the thought).

Have you tried any J-rpgs? I only ask because well, doesn't sound like the creme of the W-rpg crop is really doing it for you. Maybe your tastes in these types of games warrants a more drastic change?

Tied it, from an RPG standpoint it's laughably bad. Dull visuals, simpistic quests, painful dialogue, irrelavent stats, the basic gameplay concepts is actively opposed by the way the game works.

Don't have a PS3, and it doesn't look like the type of game I'm after.

I've tried quite a few and really enjoyed them mainly Final Fantasy and Disgaea. But the best ones seem to be PS3 games and they're not the sort of game I'm after.

I may not have been clear enough, I'm looking for a deep, reasonably freeform game with a heavy RPG base, not something shallow and linear like Mass Effect or some thing as vapid as Oblivion and Fallout 3.

This has been asked, but HAVE you tried Planescape Torment?

EDIT: Nvm, just read through some old posts. It's funny, I keep on missing your posts because you don't have an avatar, and that's always the first thing I look for.

Sounds to me like the OP likes turn-based RPGs more than real time is all.

Give King's Bounty: Armored Princess a try, or perhaps the Spiderweb Software games.

Sadly no, that's mainly because I've never found a copy (although this may change now the copyright issues have cleared up). I haven't gone ou of my way to find a copy because I never really liked the Planescape setting.

I'm thinking about gettiing one. If I can find a decent image of akimbo 1887's from MW2 then I'd use that.

If it ever becomes worth it to you to at least give it a shot, it IS available on gametap. Along with the original X-Com, which alone is worth the price.

Speaking of X-com, while not your typical rpg, is a big big recommendation from me. One of the best games ever made in my oh so humble opinion. I'm pretty sure the first month of gametap is free, so you could kill two birds with one stone and see if either of those strike your fancy.
