You know, this reminds me of back when I was getting excited for Fallout 3 and watching all the preview videos as soon as I could and looked up everything I could...

I really hope they don't mess this up, and by the looks of it they will be... it seems like they're taking the Fallout 3 model and shoving extra crap down its throat... but who knows, this could turn out better than I expect.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I saw the first shot of him walking around and I could see no changes whatsoever...
This...is generally what I was a little worried about when I saw the vid.

Granted I would've been wetting my pants a while back when it was DLC-era. But -NOW- we're expecting a completely new and upgraded game... right?...
I think you may be hoping for the wrong thing.

The graphics/technical side will most likely not be upgraded at all as it is built on the Fallout 3 engine.

What will undoubtedly be improved is the story, humour and overall atmosphere, which should all be closer to Fallout 2.

Developed by Obsidian.

I warn everyone to seriously lower their expectations - at least then you can be pleasantly surprised instead of crushingly disappointed.

...on the Bethesda engine though.
Alpha Protocol uses Unreal Engine 3.

I've been in your position, I was full of hope and amazement, the second game was coming! Sure, it wasn't by Bioware, but what did that matter? Obsidian had done RPGs before, right?

Wrong.

What was delivered to my door (actually I bought it in the shop, but whatever) was a game unfinished, broken, worse-looking than the first, sloppy, and heartbreaking to play. Why heartbreaking you ask? Because I wanted it to be good - I NEEDED it to be good, but it was merely OK. And the ending, dear God the ending...

To this day, that game has not been fixed, to this day I try and forget that game happened.

And that game?

That game was KotOR 2.

Hmm...your point about the graphics are well taken. Well, then here's to hoping that the story/characters/atmosphere are fantasmic. While I wouldn't use such as a strong term as 'undoubtedly', this has more to do with my general skepticism of -everything- than anything else

pre-ordered and awaiting the new game.

Gameplay looks very much like 3 but I was expecting that...I was expecting the GMG to look different though

Ok, first off Woodsey, I'vebeen drikning heavily so there will be a few typos!

RE: Alpha Protocall: Is it ugly? Broken? I've never played it so I have no idea what it's like. If they made it ugly using Unreal 3 then that was quite a non-achievement. Although... don't you fidn Unreal, even at its best, makes faces consistently look like play-dough?

RE: KOTOR.. I never played either game so I can't judge. But I have certainly heard from many people that Bioware's original was the better game.

Now this is genuine curiousity, for my own sake... what was it that Obsidian fucked up in these games? I want to know because i dont want to horribly dissapointed by New Vegas.

First things first: what are you drinking?

Now, I just cited Alpha Protocol of an example of how what engine they're using makes no difference - they will make it uglier in some way. Don't tell me, even with your current alcohol-induced inhibitions, that that New Vegas gameplay video didn't look uglier than Fallout 3?

And here's a screenshot of Alpha Protocol:

Compared to another Unreal user, Arkham Asylum:

And yeah, Unreal does have a problem with faces (I prefer the CryEngine 2/3, like everyone should!) but for the most part it's quite the looker.

Again, KotOR 2 is just a worse-looking game compared to KotOR 1 for the most part; rougher textures, FMV cutscenes that render about something like 800 x 400, etc. etc.

Then there's the story; I imagine it would be quite a good story (probably overtaking the original) but it's hard to say for certain, since they cut content without fully removing everything to do with that content.

For example, there's a major side-quest they cut, but you can still get about halfway through it before it just ends and you can't go further. It doesn't stop you playing (they cut just before you go somewhere) but it leaves you wondering where the fuck it went.

Anyway, the story is over complicated and not fully explained, and just ends without much of a conclusion. It has it's moments - there's one very emotionally hard-hitting moment I can think of right now - but it's a jumbled mess for the most parts.

Then there's the characters, who aren't as good as the first game's. Even the Hitman-Droid, who was hilarious in the first game, somehow has a downer put on him.

They will disappoint you.

Umm...why did the player have a pipboy? Was the character a vault dweller(I dont believe so)? If not, that seems kinda lazy not to invent a new inventory/map/status screen. Little things like that break games for me.

Hopefully the story explains it.

I believe your character is from a vault, some screenshots showed him wearing a vault outfit.

I know it's majorly to do with Lucas Arts, but if Bioware had been doing it in the same time frame it would have been done better.

Their track-record is sub-standard. New Vegas looks worse graphically than FO3 - obviously that's not everything, but it doesn't instill a lot of confidence.

Anyway, they have Alpha Protocl - their first own IP - and look how that's turned out. NWN2 (another thing inhereted from Bioware) and I don't know anyone that prefers that to the original.

KotOR 2 was a shambles in many aspects - don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but it wasn't a patch on the first. They cut an entire planet from KotOR 1, and in the entire game there's one single hint of it being missing.

If you need to cut stuff then fine, but the HK-50 factory (the major missing side-quest I used for an example) had about half the quest left in! Blatantly too, not snippets that could easily be missed, they appeared through parts of the main story.

Didn't think the character(I'm not saying he because you could make a she(I'm presuming)) was. All I heard was that they were part of a gang that tried to kill him/her.

The suit is from a Vault Casino.
(Yup, a giant underground casino vault, you have to go there in the Campain apparently.)
I think you either are givin the pipboy, or you find it

2 glasses of wine, 6 vodkas, 1 Jager and 2 whiskeys. (and by Irish standards I am a lightweight so it's quite a lot)

It honestly looked exactly the same to me. Hang on, I'll have another look...

Yeah, it looks the same but with a better frame rate.

Again sorry for typos

Wow.Those screenshots say a lot, don' they? Seems some devs get to grips with engines better than others. Rocksteady are very very cool at creating atmosphere.

Mad to think Borderlands (one of the best looking games I've evr seen) was on the same engine. In fairness thoug, I even said it in my review... Arkham Asylum was the best use of Unreal, or any graphics engine, I'v ever seen, barring maybe Assasin's Creed 2.

That sounds awful man. Fuck. I am really genuinely concerned now... I am such a geek and Fallout 1, 2 and 3 brought so much happiness to my nerdy little life.... I really want New Vegas to be great.

you were expecting something else? They won't be making another game like Fallout 1 & 2, not after the success of 3.

What? I thought that was the whole point behind the Fallout series, that in every iteration the player character is meant to be a Vault Dweller.
It may turn out to be a story twist, but at the beginnig of the game you're not a vault dweller but a courier.
