Riot shotgun and anti material rifle are the two things I used for much of the game. Shotgun up close, anti material rifle from long range and sneak attacks. If you don't have the strength for the anti material rifle, use the Gobi scout rifle.

For melee, Oh, Baby! is the weapon of choice and easy to obtain.

Oh, Baby! is so fun to use. You can just run around and swing wildly and heads will randomly a-splode (or a-splat, more like).

Problems solved before they notice you're there. I've personally taken down Cazadores LONG before I should have been able to with these.
Indeed. Thats pretty much why full Sneak/Guns with high Agility/Perception is basicly a gamebreaker once you got a sniper rifle. Pick Sniper and the obvious dmg perks as well and you can stealth crit everything before it can react. Especially if you get yourself some JSP Hand Load Ammo for it. Everything that cant be killed with one shot, deathclaws and the endboss, just cripple the leg, take distance and laugh at them hobble in your direction.

Honestly, each playstyle has a Weapon and Perk balance which can literally screw things up.
For example my last run was Unarmed/Melee, high Agi/Str, Piercing Strike, Slayer, couple other perks for increased damage/more vats points and DR, couple a psycho and med-x into that and get a ballistic fist. The only Problems you will ever face is multiple deathclaws at the same time, matriarch/patriarch/legendary deathclaws and the endboss. In that they can take a beating and dish out. Get the Perk which causes knock-back as soon as possible however and then just tough it out. The only hard part to that approach is killing Caesar, because he's got a Ballistic fist, as do the other 5 Guys in his tent.

That being said, nothing else poses a threat as you can cover the distance to them fairly easy due to high agi/fast movement speed and kill them before they even get any good hits in with ranged weapons. At least so far thats the two options i found which can be "balance breaking" on some level, because fights get ridiculously easy :D

I love revolvers in New Vegas, you can feel like a real post-apocalyptic cowboy.

Yeah, revolvers are really fun to use. Especially the Ranger Sequoia and the Hunting Revolver.

So uncivilized, sneaking around and murdering people unnoticed to complete your objectives. You should be like me and always try reasoning with your enemies so you can come to a peaceful solution... and melt their face with a plasma rifle if they look at you funny :D
Pretty much exactly how I played 3/5 NV accounts I had. Oh hey you don't think my words are smooth enough for a discount? WELL DEN FUCK YOUR FACE! and then search that goo :)

OT Get the Mysterious stranger revolver. A quick google search will tell you how to get it because i dont remember the quest name. Its really easy though.

I played a sneaky-sniper character as well, and you can't do any better than a fully upgraded Hunting Rifle. It and the upgrades are available relatively early on, unlike the Sniper Rifle, and I just couldn't switch to the latter after using the Scoped Hunting Rifle for more than half a game. The recoil was just annoying, and the Hunting Rifle actually does more damage, iirc.

Plus, I didn't really care for the gunshot sound of the Sniper Rifle, and I really dig the whole bolt-action thing :p

Do Contreras quest-line in camp McCarran and you get a sweet unique M1 Garand that uses 308 ammo and rapid fires crazy fast. Its called "This Machine" And if you download a mod for extra weapons mods you can mod it out and tun it into a powerful sniper rifle.

Kill Benny & loot his gun (Maria) and checkered shirt. They're ring-a-ding.

I'm more of a fan of Energy Weapons myself, it's nice to have always have whatever ammo you need whenever you need it (and goo piles don't bother me).

My favorites are the Gauss Rifle, and the Tri-Laser Rifle. Three critical hits to the head? At once? Uh, yes please.

silenced sniper rifle for long range sneak attacks (ammo's relativity plentifully as well unlike the more powerful but harder to scavenge parts and ammo for weapon the anti material rifle) id also recommend a shotgun of some sort for close range (the sawed-off shotgun dos the most damage of any of the non unique shotgun weapons and has a relatively fast reload speed but 12 gauge rounds are slightly scarcer to finds then 20 gage but not by much)

also invest in the jury rigging perk if you can get it and you can reaper ANYTHING using similar crap, it insures your guns not going to break as long as you keep killing people and taking theirs

in addition to those i always carry my completely modded out laser rifle complete with scope for sniping, Due to the fact that it can fire 2 beams at once by adding a beam splitter, it can score a critical hit for each beam outside of V.A.T.S. This effect allows it to sometimes,(with a critical hit for each beam) hit a huge amount of damage (72.6) per shot. Depending on your perks and Luck, this weapon can be a good choice just for its 2 beam shot. Keep this in mind when choosing a weapon. The laser rifle has no iron sights, but compensates with excellent zoom. This is further augmented by the scope, however this makes it less effective in close quarters. Nevertheless, the laser rifle makes a decent starting weapon. Even later in the game it still proves useful to a certain extent.

Also I think you will be able to buy the antimaterial rifle from the gun runners around level 16 or so. They should already be able to sell you a regular sniper.
Expensive as hell though, especially for a lower leveled player. Also, I read on the wiki that firing this gun fully repaired amounts to like 17 or 18 caps per shot (Due to ammo costs and decay you'll have to repair). Still, it is the best rifle weapon in the game, and pretty much one or two shots deathclaws with sneak.
Weapon repair kits are your best friend. They cost a total of like 20 caps to make and ammo for he gun is about the same price as anything else, except stuff dies faster so you use less shots. Ya the gun itself is kind of expensive at around 7000 caps but what else are you going to spend your money on. As soon as you hit the strip you basically get somewhere around 30,000 free caps from the casinos and some nice armour.

Oh ya and the riot shotgun is gun in those close range situations.

So I take it I am not the only one who snipes cazadors from long range and has a perception so high that enemies show up on the radar from halfway across the map.
I have Ed-E as my companion and tell him to wait in town x3

I have a few games saved with each specialized in one field. One in melee which uses Knock Knock the named Axe from Camp Searchlight's firestation, which is a 1 hit kill, and has a unique VATS attack that knocks someone down if they survive. One in Unarmed which uses the Ballistic Glove, or the Golden Gloves, which knocks out all insects in 3 hits, people in 4, deathclaws in about 10. Energy weapons has me using the YCS-182 named gauss rifle, which is great.

All in all, if you upgrade yourself to a high enough level in that skill, you won't be able to die. In my unarmed playthrough, I wanted to make the game as difficult as possible, so I set the game to very hard and hardcore. Within 4 levels, I had ~100 unarmed and I killed people in a single hit. It doesn't help that, once you reach 45 melee and 45 unarmed, you can get piercing strike, which negates 15DT on the enemy, basically breaking the game from all difficulty other than deathclaws. Getting another skill that has a chance to knock someone over with unarmed ruins fights with deathclaws, as well.

Not to mention that these perks also affect companions, so Veronica and Rex both negate 15DT and knock people over constantly. I seldom get a chance to even punch anymore before Rex takes them out first.

In my playthough I'm at Lvl 12 and I'm making my way to New Vegas, with around 75 points in both Guns and Sneak. You may have guessed from this is that the way I like to approach enemies is to creep up to them hidden and to crit headshot them. At the moment I have an unmodded Cowboy Repeater and a Hunting Rifle. I'm not a big fan of the sights on the repeater and I don't do well with the Hunting Rifle from a distance. I've been on the lookout for sniper rifles but I haven't found any yet. So what I'm wondering is what is the best weapon for my current build and/or what are the best mods I can put on them?
You want a Brush Gun. It's the best non-unique gun in the game, in just about all ways. You can buy one from the weapon shop shop right outside New Vegas after the halfway point (or thereabouts) of the game.

I don't use guns, I use energy weapons. And heavy T-51b Power Armor.

Other than that...no idea.

Also, if you don't like the sights, there's an option to turn them off, which gives you back your crosshairs when zoomed in.
