I was having this very thought myself not too long ago. Definitely would look forward and see that movie. It should start at the first game's story though. (says the man that never played Fallout 1)

We should get Uwe Boll to direct it!
Great Heavens no.

The thing about a Fallout movie is that it's not really linear enough as an RPG to make a good film. The script would have to have a bunch of completely made up stuff involving the main character following a very direct path in order to make a good movie, which kind of defeats the purpose of the original game. I don't think it would work too well.

Now, the Half-Life series, especially HL2, would make a totally kickass film. It's got a great story and relatively believable characters, and a linear plotline, which makes it much easier to adapt for a movie. Just as long as it isn't Boll or *shiver* Tarantino directing it...

I honestly think the Fallout series has a lot more potential for a film than other games - the three Fallout titles and Tactics mean that there's no need to focus on any of their main plots, as long as you make sure to capture the '50s cyberpunk look and don't butcher the Deathclaws and Super Mutants from their in-game appearance (in what is known as the Wing Commander syndrome, if anyone else remembers how terrible that film was). If they can get the aesthetic look and attitude, they could make it about basically anything in the post-apocalyptic world.

Has anyone else heard bodiless rumors circulating about a Morrowind movie? Nope, neither have I, that plot was epic enough to make a damn trilogy (actually they could with Tribune and Bloodmoon).

But Fallout would be a good movie. The ending was actually incredibly well thought out just badly scripted and implemented.

May I repeat what has already been said earlier in the thread? Go and watch the Mad Max films. All of them. That there is all the post-apocalyptic film fare you'll ever need.
And to be fair the Mad Max films were heavy influences on Fallout, right down to the one-sleeved leather jackets.

fallout 3 would be the most "accessable" because it is on more systems...so the studio would probably choose that one...plus they could just get liam neelson to do the vault dweller's father...how would they recreate the ron perlman narration without it being very very hokey sounding?
I assume step one for that would be to have Ron Perlman do it.

The campy fun that is had in the video game would not translate well to a video game.

Does it ever?

I mean giant scorpians, power armor, mutants = great video game stuff.
Not for movies.
Giant Scorpions - See numerous big monster movies
Power Armor - Iron Man (and don't tell me that's different because the only difference is that Iron Man flies and has integrated weaponry.)
Mutants - See numerous horror movies

I mean seriously, none of that is outside the realm of being a good movie, it just needs someone who knows what they're doing and understands the mythos (and I still say that Bethesda did understand both when they made Fallout 3, no matter what the Van Buren hopefuls keep saying)

yes, but whenever there is a narrative for movies, it sounds very hokey and contrived...especially the line "war. war never changes." it wouldnt sound right to me, not being in a videogame setting.

Unfortunately, there are many problems with trying to attempt a Fallout game-to-movie addaptation. The fact is that fallout is simply too unique. Yes it hilariously quotes and makes reference to movies such as Mad Max, A Boy And His Dog, Star Wars, Monty Python, etc. But its uniqueness is its ability to make you ponder the believability of its storyline and think about the possibility of it actually coming true, while you simultaniously laugh your ass off because you just melted a Super Mutant into a pile of goo while trying to test an anti-mutanagenic serum.

Also there are many variables. The storyline changes slightly if you are a good or evil. Karmatic elemnts are just one example. Video games themselves make a difficult foundation for a movie because, by making it a movie, you take away the interactivity that gave the game its primary appeal. For instance, the choice of slaughtering the entire town after you have gotten what you wanted from them.

Also, noone wants to watch a movie with the same overall storyline of the game that they have played a hundred times through. Taking away the interactivity, outlining a new storyline, while keeping the characters and appeal that we all love about Fallout would be an extremely difficult task to accomplish. I'm almost rooting against a movie for fear of being extremely disappointed and having an unfortunate blemish placed upon Fallout's flawless PC reputation. The movie may end up being as disappointing as the Playstation 2 adaptation of Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel.

I couldn't agree more! Enjoy watching the movies from which Fallout became a legend it is today - there's no need for manufacturing unnecessary movies just so the rest of the "ungaming world" would be aware of what a great game it is, 'cause we already know that. Like the man said... there are too many variables: personality, karma, freedom of multiple choice etc. While you PLAY you can do all of this... but while you're just sitting down in the cinema - all you can do is WATCH and CRY!
Unfortunately... I've seen many abominations that crawled out of Hollywood, and I'll bet my left horn that they'll find a way to screw this one up too (probably in the next 2-3 years). Right now they're working on Prince of Persia... Jesus Christ... main role - Jake Gyllenhal... why not take an albino midget? - even he'd look more persian) Where's the end of the world when you need one?!

Could be good, but as has been said It would be very hard to portray the series right, without either making it crap, what with changing the story and all to accommodate different audiences or It will become some PG13 mess where It becomes more like some Disney movie about a man and his dog (dogmeat) or some other crap representation.

I will say this. If Bethesda get to have a decent amount of control it will probably have a very good soundtrack.

Good god, no. Fallout would make a terrible movie. Why? Because it's a game based around exploration and a tremendous amount of contextual information that would be almost impossible to convey in movie format. There's not a good conflict to base a movie plot on, either.

At best, you could base an original movie in the Fallout setting. But you could not make Fallout into anything even resembling a decent movie.

It would make a low budget Sci Fi channel movie made by Uve Boll. You need a strong plot for a movie, the plot in the game is almost optional, run around, kill things (and maybe complete missions). the game has a game plot and the movie needs to progress like a movie

Splintercell would make a great movie, unfortunately you would need to find a really good actor with Michael Ironsides voice to play the part of Sam Fisher

Fallout could work well as a movie.

There are 113 confirmed, canon vaults, scattered about the US. There's no mention that this is an absolute number and not all the vaults that are confirmed have been given a back-story/purpose. There's plenty of room to move about and make an original script within the Fallout Universe that doesn't totally balls up the games thus far.

The setting would probably be New York, the only US city marketable to filthy foreigners that hasn't already had a Fallout set in it. The plot would be fairly linear, probably your mutants Vs humans scenario, with our plucky young Vault Dweller being forced to emerge, due to a robot uprising in the vault, at just the right moment to shift the balance in power to the humans, who then proceed to wipe out the filthy mutants, before vanishing off into the wastes after blasting half the flesh off the overseer when he returns to his Vault with really big guns to blast the robots new service panels, discovering that the overseer is totally a robot.

Yeah, sounds shit now, but give it a few exploding cars, giant robots, plasma rifles and super mutants and the movie going public will gladly fork over their download time to pirate the thing.
