I imagine at least a few of you have read a fan-fiction at one point or another. I don't make a regular habit of it, but have managed to read four in total myself, two bad and two good.

The bad consists of My Immortal [http://myimmortalrehost.webs.com/], a "goffic" (as the author terms it) Harry Potter fic, and Cupcakes [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/02/story-cupcakes.html], a grim My Little Pony fic. Both have become rather infamous for different reasons (My Immortal for it's legendarily awful writing, complete disregard for source material, copious amounts of badly spelled profanity and impromptu fucking, Mary Sue protagonist, so on and so forth, and Cupcakes for sheer gruesomeness.)

On the other hand there's the good, the first being The Terrible Secret of Animal Crossing [http://lparchive.org/Animal-Crossing/], a terrifying(ly hilarious) deconstruction of the titular game. The second, which I just read today after hearing about it on TVTropes [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage] is The Ponies Discover /co/ [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/02/story-ponies-discover-co-compiled.html]. As the title implies, the story is about the MLP cast being exposed to 4chan's /co/ board and the FIM fandom via Pinkie's laptop that she was given by the Princess. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't go well. What is surprising, however, is just how well the story is handled. Were it not for the subject matter, it would be easy to imagine it as an episode of the show.

What is your experience with fan-fiction, and what what is the best fan-fic you've ever read (or alternatively, the worst?)

You, my dear OP, have had the misfortune of reading the two worst fanfics written by man (sic).

OT: No, more of a writer, never really read fanfics per se, but tended towards WH40K, Star Wars & X-Men...

I'm not sure if this is the best fic or the worst I've read, but it's something.

I usually avoind fan-fiction, mostly I'd go for the Dramatic Reading of the truly terrible ones for a quick laugh. If TV Tropes is to be believed, Shinji & Warhammer 40K is pretty funny/good though.

The one I find hilariously awesome would be the Harry Potter Fanfic 30 H's, AKA HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, due to it's balls-out insanity.

The best fanfiction I remember reading, as in the one that was written the best and seemed to make the most internal sense, was a Bleach fanfic by the name of "Empathy". It's apparently very well-regarded. Unfortunately I knew nothing of Bleach when I first read it so I got confused very easily. But I plan on going back and reading it again once I've seen a good chunk of the Bleach episodes just so I know what's truly going on and who all the characters are.

The worst I've ever read? I've read some shockingly bad Harry Potter ones (managed to avoid My Immortal though) but nothing quite as ridiculous as "30H". The title's just 30 H's in a row and it has nothing to do with any establish continuity at all. Features include space armour suits with chainsaws on their crotches, a guitar named Fuckslayer, Dumbledore having a leg made of guns that he kicks a planet to death with and... well, you get the idea.

Honourable mention for most gruesomely disturbing fanfiction I've ever read goes to... actually I can't remember the name but it was a "Suite Life on Deck" fanfiction that basically involved Zack and London killing and eating Bailey and Cody. Yeah... shit was fucked up.

The only one I've read (in recent times, mind you.), and it's still being written is Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. There are some things in that story that are beyond the most awesome things I've read anywhere else...

I was forced to read My Immortal, it scarred me for life. Honestly, any sort of Mary-Sue or ridiculous slash pairing is stupid. My ex used to write "angst" fics (it's like slash but without the sex I think), about happily married men who were just brosephs. I think people need to be sat down and have things like bromances and banter explained to them before they get the wrong idea.

However I did read a gears of war one recently which I thought was brilliant. Very well done. Trust me on this.

I read a bunch of Rockman exe/Megaman Battle network fics when I was a kid they were fun to read.
And I read the Animal Crossing one.
almost forgot I read the first chapter of a fic where Gordon Freeman and Master Chief switched places.
I also made a ending to my Immortal making it a nightmare of Harry Potter.
and I saw a few episodes of Fanfic Masterpiece theater on That Guy with the glasses
personaly I hate fics that have un-cannon gay sex scenes (they always use the argument "oh they never specified they were hetero sexual!")

People draw inspiration from the stuff around them, so all writing is fanfiction to one degree or another. You've chosen some of the worst fan-fiction, from an age where getting things published is easier than ever. Try some older fan-fiction, like Romeo and Juliet. What, you thought Shakespeare made up that storyline? Hah, first to commit to paper for like it.

I write fanfiction. I've got a Pre-gen Naruto fanfic called A Fresh Snowfall going on right now so I've had barely anytime to read any fanfics at the moment. =3 I've read some beautiful fanfics (Bloodstained Roses by Scarlet Divinity) and some terrible ones (My Immortal comes straight to mind...)

You know what, I completely agree that it's awesome, I need to catch up with it at some point. It's the only one I've come across that I actually feel I've learnt something after reading.

With most fan-fiction it's a case of your mileage may vary, it depends on what you like.

Oh god, yes!

Most of the Pokemon ones on the same site are good too, if not technically fanfiction. Have you read Pokemon Quartz? Or Monster Rancher?

I once wrote fan fiction for Warhammer 40k in highschool. It sucked anus through a 3 inch straw.

Didn't we already have a thread about this a while ago?

Oh...and if you think "My Immortal" was bad, don't read "Celebrian". Trust me on this one.

As for me, I most definitely have read fanfiction. In fact...

I'm also a writer of them. [http://www.fanfiction.net/~anthonybault]

Fanfiction scares the living shit out of me.
I don't want to know about
any of your sick fantasies.
The madness must end,
I think I'm going insane.
This is getting too far.

I've never read a good fan-fiction piece because the pseudo-writers can't continue the legacy of the character, they can only use established material so that they could fool around with it. It usually ends very poorly.
