I'm a furry, and that fandom really creeps me out 2/3 of the time...

Then again, I guess I can't talk because I'm sure I creep people out too <__<

I've been part of the Spyro fandom (i.e. the fanart/fanfiction communities of all the games, Legend and Skylanders included) for years. It can be grating at times, with most of the fandom being either children or emotionally stunted adults, but there's a minority of intelligent and mature individuals. And in many cases I can make comparisons to the Sonic community (far too many to count, actually). The entire thing is basically a guilty pleasure for me.

I hate to be the special snowflake, but I really can't get behind joining a mob mentality of devotion towards a particular product. I really really really like certain games and franchises and companies, but I wouldn't bend over backwards for them blindly to fit in with a group of sheeple on the internet.

I just don't see why you can't draw video game related art and discuss games without having to conform to a hivemind of imbeciles who 90% of the time, can't take criticism without transforming into a whiny troll. And I think that's my biggest problem with most of these "communities", is that they are blind to all negativity (even constructive criticism) about their special little product.

I actively avoid the larger and crazier fanbases to things I like. Sure in-jokes and community are fun but they all usually turn into "socially inept fetishists" and "Fans of the Fandom" which I don't want a part of. It also kinda encourages people to define themselves with the idea rather than simply liking it. The differences between 'I like FIM' and 'I am a brony'.

That being said no hate thanks, I know that there are little communities that are exactly what you want but I haven't found 'um.

According to Dictionary.com - fan base actually refers to the regular supporters. Not the rabid ones - that's a fandom. :p

None, except maybe visual kei, since the fanbase is generally raving fangirls...
Ugh, I didn't even think of that one. I went to go see Miyavi in concert a couple years ago... the second-hand embarrassment was overwhelming. Japanese fans are much more tolerable in my experience.

OT: I'm kind of hesitant to associate myself with Homestuck fans. I mean, I love the comic, and there are plenty of sane, respectful, and totally cool fans, but... When they're bad, they're really bad.

I like MLP and my entire life revolves around that show, and that is how I identify myself, and if someone doesn't like MLP, I take offence and take it personally, and all of my friends must be bronies, along with potential dates

I'm not really ashamed to be known as a fan of anything I like. I actually like fanbases, and I think getting involved in a community can be pretty awesome

Ok I think I may out-do everyone on this one. I'm only slightly ashamed to admit it.
I'm a (not so secret now) fan of Glee. I honestly don't know how I got into liking it, because I normally hate that kind of thing. But well it sucked me in and now I'm slightly hooked.

Don't judge me!
I judge you... but only for staying interested after the New York episode. Once they started not doing covers it all got dull for me. Plus the storylines hadn't been interesting to me in quite some time past that point, and I kept forgetting who was meant to be with who.
Did it recover after that episode?
Well It definately picked up again. And yeah they got back to doing covers. Pretty good ones too. Quite alot has happened now, and well the most shocking part is
Sue is pregnant
Some new characters too. The third season is pretty good. Ha I'm a self admitted Gleek.

I'm somewhat ashamed to be part of the Brony community (MLP:FiM community in case someone didn't know but I doubt that). It's not because of the fact the series is based on ponies nor the fact I am a 20 year old guy.. it's the fact most of the members (not all, but most) are really questionable with their behavior.

I used to be really engaged with the community and an all out Brony. However, as time passed up until Season 2, Bronies started to show their true colors (har har). They would bash people for giving the show criticism, or as far as not liking the show which is their personal opinion if not taste in things. Also, they'd get on each other for pairing ponies with whoever, even if it's their own OC pony. I find that silly, but the worst part is the fact they shun people for liking or draw R34 based on MLP:FiM.

I don't agree with it ether, but if people or artists themselves are into R34 for reasons rendered, who are we to judge? You don't judge and shun them saying "Oh, they're not real Bronies. They're just a disgrace and troll". .. Not as I see it, they're as much of a fan as you probably are I'm assuming. Ether way, the Brony community is alright but most of them do make me ashamed of being part of the community.

Besides, you don't treat people nicely because a show tells you to. You treat people nicely and fairly because it's the right thing to do. I mean, if you started disliking the show or if it was off the air for good.. would you keep it's morals to heart? Just saying, but yeah I am not much of a Brony anymore because of stuff like that.
Completely agreed with you. I ended up leaving the fandom a few months ago for these very reasons, as well as my diminishing interest in the show itself. I would often get labeled a troll and treated as such for ridiculous things (liking pre-G4, liking generally unliked characters, not following fanon closely, supporting rule34 artists, among others). I just couldn't bear to be associated with them anymore. I'm aware that not all bronies act this way, but with how quickly the fandom is expanding it's certainly becoming a large number.

I am honestly not ashamed of most things I enjoy, which isn't to say I am going to put banners outside my room/house announcing them. However, I am ashamed of certain fanbases that ruin things for me. I couldn't watch any of the Harry Potter movies for the longest time because of the rabid fans, same thing with flamewars erupting from a dispute over Zelda games. These two are examples of me being ashamed to like something because of the fanbase around it.

captcha: sax and violins, damn straight.

Hmm, I'm not really into the whole "Idiots like what I like, I should feel bad" thing. But the closest thing I can think of would be more mainstream genres of heavy metal. There are just so many fucking idiots on YouTube that are wannabe-elitists it isn't even funny.

"You say Miley Cyrus, I SAY SLIPKNOT!!!"

The thing is, if I tell someone I like metal this is the kind of shit they think of off the bat.

I'm kind of ashamed to be a part of the brony fanbase, mostly because of people who take things too far and I remember how it was in the beginning when I joined where I thought it was fun, but it comes off as some kind of internet cult in some ways to me. How they worship the ideals expressed in the show like it's their religion and anyone who disagrees is hated on >_>

I've made a lot of great friends that are bronies and that's pretty much the only reason I'm even part of their group at this point.

Fanbases that I'm more proud to be a part of would be anime and VNs. Japan do make some great stuff.

I agree with Matthew94 in that nobody should be ashamed of something you enjoy, and like him I only listen to constructive criticism.

Right now, I'm feel ashamed to be a Mass Effect fan. I hate that fans are still petitioning and complaining to get a new ending. I believe that an artist should have right to whatever he or she wants with their art. I'm not saying that avoids them of criticism, but fans seem to have lost sight of line between criticism and just be an a-hole, and that the last 5 minutes of game shouldn't ruin the experience of playing a game, regardless of how many hours you put in. What Fan base do you feel ashamed to be a part of? and Please don't come here about the ending of ME3. I was just using that as an example.
I'm with the ME fan base for the same reasons and more. The creepy fangirls obsessing over Thane and Garrus make me rethink calling myself a Mass Effect 'fan'. Really. It's as bad anime now with creepy art i can't seem to get away from.
