Has there ever been a more self-hating combustible fanbase than Final Fantasy fans? So caught up in the OCD-esque desire to compare and contrast the series, that every Final Fantasy fan seems to ere towards a sort of absolutism driven by weird Final Fantasy ideologies. It's gotten to the point where mentioning that you like certain Final Fantasies (regardless of their objective quality) is bawed against simply out of some sort of formed ideology. "What's that you don't like Final Fantasy VI the best? You're opinion is now meaningless." "What, you like Final Fantasy VII!? Kill the blasphemer!" etcetera.

Here's a fun game to play along the same lines: Tell a Myst fan that Riven wasn't that great, and Revelation was the best in the series.

Hilarity ensues.

There's nothing I'm ashamed of being a fan of. However, the brony fanbase certainly has some embarrassing people in it. The majority of the fanbase are pretty good, but the bad apples......are really bad.

Am I ashamed of being an MLP fan? No, not at all. Am I embarrassed to be associated with certain members of the fanbase? I would be lying if i said no.
I was trying to think of what to say, but this describes it perfectly.

I consider myself a fan of the show, but not a brony. I don't go around posting pictures of ponies on threads or joining pony-related forums (only pony-related discussion here), but I do have a couple of my display pictures as a pony (iPhone and iPad home screen for example) as well as 2 figurines.
Even though I haven't gone around telling people about the show at all, and the amount of pony merchandise I own amounts to zero, I still call myself a brony, if only for the fact its easier and quicker than saying "older male fan of MLP:FiM".

Heck, the reason my family knows I'm a fan is because I have pony related wallpapers on my desktop wallpaper slideshow. That and my sketchbook that contains some pony sketches that I did while bored.

Although that might change if I end up getting a shirt or two....

Well I'm a Boys Love fangirl. I'm not so much ashamed of it as I don't really mention it that often simply because I don't want to deal with the flack that a person can get for it.

Yes, I know it's unrealistic, I don't use BL to teach me anything about real, human gay men, I just want a romance that doesn't involve looking at boobs. Is that so much to ask for?
Isn't Boys Love (Yaoi) aimed at girls in the first place? I'm pretty sure there's an offshoot designed for gay men, but I'm not sure.
I wouldn't say it's aimed at girls, more aimed at women (I know I'm being a bit of a word nazi here, but that slightly irked me), but yes, boys love is usually made by women for women. Your point may I ask?

You know what? I'm ashamed to be a part of the gaming fanbase in general. The majority of us are normal people but the very vocal ones are such judgmental assholes. This isn't even about the "entitlement" crap because I think a consumer can feel entitled to whatever they want, it's their money. Just don't expect to get it, and inform yourself before you make purchases in the future. This is about the misogyny, the racism, the homophobia, etc.

Even on here we have threads where we see a jock and automatically assume they're a shallow douche bag (James Vega fiasco). We generalise groups (13 year old boys) and just generally have a superiority complex. It's pathetic, we're such a volatile bunch and then we wonder why the general public treats us like we're retarded.

-Star Wars-I think you have a basic idea of why. It's full of people whining about changes and how the prequels sucked. I enjoy all the movies, don't let the changes really bother me, and even enjoy the Clone Wars series.

-Mass Effect-I agree with you on how fans are demanding a new ending. I didn't like the endings either, but at the end of the day, it isn't my game or story, it's Bioware's. They can do whatever the hell they want (Apply this principle to George Lucas and Star Wars).

At certain times of the cycle, I hate being a Gamer. The Console war nonsense irks me. PC gamers are now acting more like dicks than they have in times past. Partially from them not understanding what superiority actually means.

Right now, I'm feel ashamed to be a Mass Effect fan. I hate that fans are still petitioning and complaining to get a new ending. I believe that an artist should have right to whatever he or she wants with their art. I'm not saying that avoids them of criticism, but fans seem to have lost sight of line between criticism and just be an a-hole, and that the last 5 minutes of game shouldn't ruin the experience of playing a game, regardless of how many hours you put in. What Fan base do you feel ashamed to be a part of? and Please don't come here about the ending of ME3. I was just using that as an example.
I....I cant help it but

the ending didnt ruin the game for me

but "art" is a bullshit excuse...

When I went to E3 last year I was ashamed to be part of the video game community. There were probably some cool guys (and it was 90% guys) there, but it just seemed like all the dregs of the video game community were the most prominent. I guess there was a reason Arcades were dimly lit and most video gaming takes place online or in the privacy of your own home.
if Im reading this correctly youre saying 90% were fine but 10% were "bad" (any specific examples?) that seems kind of unfair....the 90-10% ratio of noral to WTF is pretty much humanity in general..regardless of what they are into

YO, over here.

I agree with a lot of the criticisms; it's a bad ending, the game feels rushed, etc.

But to take it this far with so much hostility and say that 5 minutes ruin an entire franchise just because the ending is a bit of a dickslap? Childish.

Lately it's gotten so that I don't really want to be associated with the fanbase of anything. Bunch of whiny, self-entitled, loud mouthed, fuckskulls.

]Probably any moe anime, particularly K-ON!

I mean, I like the show for more reasons then just "IT'S SO MOE~~!!", but most of the fans, particularly otakus in Japan, are just really disgusting.

In fact, any anime in general that has even a hint of "moe" is sorta given the same treatment, even something like Madoka Magica.
Just what the hell does that even mean anyway? WTF is "moe"? Sounds like another term I'm going to end up adding to my "Most Despised Words and Phrases" list. Already on that list are "pwn," "emo," and "bling." >_<

The cover did need work, I'll give you that. The way people reacted though was hilariously out of proportion though. They had a placeholder for the original cover that looked AMAZING.

The new cover didn't quite compare...

I was a little annoyed with how some Mass Effect fans... but I'm not ashamed to be in the fandom. If they want to do that, then it's their choice.

I rarely associate with anyone. Even if they're in my own fandom. It's not because I'm ashamed of them, it's because I don't really talk to people.

None at all.

The only ones I get flak for being in is from ignorant people so I don't care what they say.
Well that's pretty much the ideal way to see things. I mean, if you're a fan of something, you have a reason to like it. What should you care what other people think? God die and give them the crown or something? Lol.

Only exception is things like... bad sexual... interests. Gay? Super. BDSM? Great. Kids? Now we have a problem...

I agree completely, my friend. Whenever I'm part of a fandom nowadays I have to hope that they don't decide to boycott or send death threats to anyone over something so trivial. If you share the obnoxious a-hole's opinion or not doesn't matter because to the public at large you're guilty by association. What a sad state of affairs...

Pretty much everything I'm a fan of:

Avatar the last Airbender/Legend of Korra: Shippers. Nuff said. Plus general obsession over specific characters

Friendship is magic: do I need to say why? I enjoyed the show but god damn those fans... just of on /mlp/ and you will see everything wrong with it.

Mass Effect: Brilliant series ruined by people bitching and moaning

Batman/ comic in general: this ones kinda two sided, some are great and others are annoying as fuck who will moan about ANY direction the comics take.
