Jurassic Park.
Well, yes and no.

The movie was great, but only for the fact that it had realistic looking dinosaurs. The book was a lot more voilent with all the blood spilling and intestine removal. It also had some pretty gosh darn clever things to say. Unfortunately, about 80% of that was left out of the movie.

Still, Jurassic Park was my Star Wars back in the day.

Hmm, lets see, how about- NONE! Every movie that was made from a book has been shit with the exception of LotR, but LotR is pretty much impossible to fuck up. The book is almost a script.

Blade Runner, based on Do Robots Dream of Electric Sheep?, and A Scanner Darkly
i think both were, originally, by Phillip K. Dick

Twilight.

Well the movie was crap-mediocre but the books of the series are fantastic, so does that count?
To each his own I guess. If you like it you like it.

LOTR is probably the obvious choice.

I'd definitely first pick Lord of the Rings, though looking through this thread, I have to agree with Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, Stardust, The Polar Express, Watchmen etc.

Well, the thread is titled "Fantastic Books that were made into Fantastic Films"; I'm not rocket scientist, but I'd say 'NO'.

I would nominate 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'/'Blade Runner'. The nice thing is that Scott didn't try to cram the whole book into the film - Mercerism and all the philosophical aspects surrounding it were left out, and he focussed on creating the bleak dystopian atmosphere.

Ah...sweet, sweet, dystopia...
I agree with Blade runner and the "A scanner darkly" also by Philip.K.Dick his works real lend themselves to film adaptations.

The lord of the Flies definately... Both versions of the film were pretty damn good too. We don't need one but a remake would probably turn out good too.
NO THEY WERE NOT... you could get away with saying the first one depends on you and what your opinions on the book are, BUT THE SECOND FILM WAS AWFUL.

well im at it how the hell can you like the book! its about a bunch of near naked kids slapping eachother for fun of it. and! the author was a rapist!

Just thought of this from the "Films that are better than books thread." [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.158219?page=1] With all the threads about bad movie adaptations of books and good books made into bad movies, a post this question to the members of The Escapist: What excellent books were adapted into incredible films?

I posted most of these before, but here's mine:

Lord of the Rings
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Maltese Falcon
Gone with the Wind
A Clockwork Orange
I would agree with LOTR but i thought the 'To Kill a Mocking Bird' film was a bit wimpy and didn't really cover a lot of the important themes and issues in the book (although Gregory Peck was pretty cool in it).

The first Charlie and the chocolate factory film (not the Johnny Depp one)was pretty good but beyond those two i can't think of any other good film adaptations of books.

Well you took Lord of the Rings so that...leaves nothing for me to say.

Everything else was crap.
The Watchmen? I assume graphic novels count as books? :D
and Sin City? Also, the first hellboy wasn't bad, the 2nd was awful.

It was an allegory for mankind. It was brilliant.

It was epic. If you don't like it, you probably don't 'get' it.

I'm not looking for your forgiveness, you don't even have an apology...

If you want to question my opinions about a book or film you clearly don't understand, do so without resorting to such abhorent flaming behaviour.

If you can't handle that, I suggest you fuck off back to youtube.

Sleepers is an amazing book and film. How about The Thing? Both film adaptations have been great and the novella is excellent too. On a similar note, The Body Snatchers had two good adaptations made (not so much the two more recent versions of the movie), and The Fly had two great movies made.
