John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and Robert Jordan are my favourite fantasy authors at the moment, but more are sure to come to mind later. I really like the Wheel of Time (R. Jordan) series though.

Philip Pullman for the His Dark Materials trilogy is awesome but the movie of The Golden Compass completely and utterly destroyed its credibility.
the movie destroyed it but the books (northern lights)were pretty decent

Brandon Sanderson was a very good read for his Mistborn series. I'm stoked now for the Wheel of Time's last few books.
David Drake is one of my favorite sci fi authors.
Robert Buettner does some good military sci fi.
I also started reading the Virga series by Karl Schroeder.
Mark L. van Name has a series that's pretty new and good sci fi.
Lastly, Karen Miller's Kingmaker/Kingbreaker series was a great couple of books.

That's what I was getting at, sorry if it seemed otherwise. People wont take him seriously if all they see is that film and dont bother to compare the books first. Movies just can't match the depth and atmosphere of a good book.

Terry Pratchett, hands down.

Edit: Oh and the books by David and Leigh Eddings such as Redemption of Althalus, those are amazing.
I love it when I don't need to type. This.

and Robert Jordan.

Terry Pratchett- I just love how he manages to fill his books with references to real life, in possibly the most obscure world ever imagined.

Philip K Dick- I've only read one of his books, A Scanner Darkly, but it is such an amazing representation of the drug and narcotics world and the insanity of Bob and Frank by the end of it is just astonishing, and it just shows so well what drugs can truely do to you.

Douglas Adams- I think it's the surreality of some of his work that interests me in him. His work is just so random and was full of standard British Comedy.

I must confess a confusion with the love of David Eddings. His writing is pleasant, but it lacks the depth of a lot of the really good fantasy out there.

Robin Hobb is an extremely good, if a little contrived. Assassin's Apprentice is a good place to start there. Good character development - nice moral ambiguity without being contrived. The angst of the main character can become a little tedious though. The Soldier Son Trilogy is fairly decent as well.

J.V Jones and the Baker's Boy Trilogy is excellent as well. She has a wonderful sense of style and manages to create interesting characters and relationships.

Already mentioned is Alistair Reynold's Revelation Space - It's an excellent cybergoth space romp - a little too much crammed into one book, but very creepy and atmospheric.

The best author I've ever encountered though, is Dan Simmons. Read Hyperion. He's a ridiculosuly erudite sci-fi author / classicist. Then get the sequels. His command of language is quite unparalleled. Also, read Ilium - it's a massively potent retelling of the siege of Troy, only infinitely sexier. With space-robots. And just... pure awesomeness.

As a side note, I keep meaning to check out Brandon Sanderson since he'll be finishing my most beloved series of books ever, but is it worthwhile? I've never really heard much hype about him, and he's rarely mentioned except in the context of Wheel of Time (at least to my knowledge).
I'm almost finished with his Mistborn Trilogy, and I've loved every word of it so far. His first novel, Elantris, is supposedly very good as well, though I've yet to read it.

Aside from what's already mentioned, I have to say Raymond E. Feist.

Diana Wynne Jones has always been one I liked (pre-Miyazaki, fyi) and beyond her I can only really say John Bellairs and Max Brooks.

And H.P. Lovecraft, if he counts.

Patricia A. McKillip who has written pretty much all of my favorite fantasy books.
Louis McMaster Bujold who normally writes Sci-Fi but I read his fantasy novels stemming from the first in the series Curse of the Chalion which was very well told.
Ursula Leguin for the Earthsea series obviously.
McKillip is basically the book version of Miyazaki for me. Just in terms of Miyazaki's films comprise like all my favorites as do McKillip's books.
I call seconded on the Bujold. Her Vorkosigan stuff is the best SciFi is the best i've ever read.

Why has no one mentioned Steven Erikson yet? The Malazan Book of the Fallen is one of the best written, most in-depth (even if it is damned complicated) fantasy I've read. The whole plot is one massive thirty xanatos pileup [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThirtyXanatosPileup] - plots upon plots upon plots by everyone from peasants to elder gods.

If you can ignore the most chronic case of delayed publication in the history of mankind, then George R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice and Fire is full of epic win.

Terry Pratchett is hilarious. His stuff is fantasy--but it's more parody. It's awesome.

The best non-rose-colored-glass high-fantasy writer though--George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Fire and Ice". His stuff is amazing. I mean. Amazing.

Though, David Eddings wrote some great stuff too and Robin Hobb's stuff was pretty good.
