I was so close to buying that game multiple times, but I just couldn't.

You'd be better off spending ten dollars on some new paint for your living room, it would look nice, make the place brighter and watching it dry would be more fun than playing Far Cry 2.
After reading comments like these, I couldn't stomach the purchase.

But then again, it's ten bucks. That's the price of a game rental or to see a movie. Even if you don't like it, you'll still get a few hours of fun. I say go for it.
Christ man just get it, it's a damn good game.

Half the claims made in comments like those can be demonstrably refuted.

Definitely, that's a steal, especially if you like STALKER. Farcry's not nearly as creepy, but it's a bigger more free-form world that's very atmospheric. Some of the weather effects are like works of art. Perfect if you want to go on safari...for humans.

EDIT: Keep in mind that this game is pretty hard until you get the lay of the land. The game is a callous prick compared to most other console shooters, and will happily make you learn through trial and error. The challenge made it fun for me. Ending blows though, I'm not really spoiling much by saying that.

I was thinking about making the same kind of investment. This thread has proven to be somewhere around helpful. I do have plenty of other good games at the moment though.

Steam's selling Far Cry 2 for $10 bucks, and I wanted an opinion before I pull the trigger. I'm pretty poor at the moment, 25 bucks is all the cash I have. But the only games I have at the moment are Team Fortress 2 and STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl seeing as my PS3 died due to human moron-ness.

So, worth it?
Kind of. It's a rather unusual flavor for an FPS. If you really enjoyed STALKER, it's probably worth a look.

I really enjoyed it. Obviously it has beautiful graphics, but I really enjoyed the firefights, the ability to use vehicles to mow down a checkpoint, the weapons were fun to use. Nothing like taking out an enemy base from 500 yards away with a mortar launcher. It has some problems, and the respawning checkpoints got annoying, but it was fun. It can be hard as hell at times, but if you like sneaking around, and then exploding into a massive firefight at the drop of a hat it's enjoyable. I got it for $10 off Steam during their Holiday blowout, and I would say I got at least 20 hours out of it before I finished my first playthrough, so I would say that's worthwhile. I did spend quite a bit of time wandering around looking for diamonds and just generally being an asshole, but for the cost it's worth it. As long as you get the sneak suit and the dart rifle, stealth isn't a problem.

Personally I found Far Cry 2 unplayable. I just couldn't get anywhere. I would go off to a mission and get killed by enemies and I'd try again and get killed again. You always encounter them, they always attack you, and you can't just drive past them because your vehicle will break down from their gun fire. Even when I got to an objective if I died I'd have to go all the way at the least back to a safe house. Why can't I just give another go at it like any other game would let me do? I eventually got fed up with it and sold the game.

However, I was playing the 360 version but I've heard the PC version has a quick save button. That would have saved me a considerable amount of grief. In that case I would give Far Cry 2 a very tentative recommendation.

well, get more than 25 bucks, then yes. I never played it, but it seems like a plenty fun game to be honest. I might get it for that price.

Reasons for your hate?
That's a fair request.

Basically, you spend only about 20% of the game having anything resembling fun.

The remaining 80% is spend driving to and fro between quest givers, quest markers and quest helpers.

This wouldn't be so bad if there was a decent fast travel mechanic, and if the enemy checkpoints didn't respawn literally one minute after you just cleared them out. I'm not exaggerating, they really do respawn this fast.

It gets so frustrating having to do the same tasks over and over and over, it's so goddamn repetitive.

It's a pity, because there are some nice shooting mechanics and some lovely visuals.

You will often get shot dead instantly by enemies who seem to have telescopic vision and superhuman aim, who can't see through foliage. And don't start me on the mortar baddies...

That said, I did play it all the way to the end... and it gets a bit better about 75% of the way through its 30 or so hours, when you unlock all the big explosive weapons.

Save about seventy bucks and get the PS3 repaired.
I'd skip the three miles sniper shots to your head.

For $10?

Hell yeah its worth it.

Go for it. I enjoyed the story, but it was drawn out. Just warning you.

The mapmaker is really good. Kind of intimidating, but people have created some really amazing maps.

Get the game! It's actually really good, if you really want a good idea of gameplay etc, then watch MajorSlack on YouTube since he does a walkthrough of the game. He has videos for every part of the game and he hilarious. It's the best way to get a feel for the game. Plus he loves it so much he's played it through 3 times.
Yea it's sometimes frustrating and there's some places where you want to kill the game, but overall it is a fun game to play.
