I too am really curious about Far Cry 2. The choice part, the massive world without loading zones and the Dunia engine (Ubisoft's custom engine based on an improved Crytek engine) interest me. The allied AI may be idiots, but haven't seen any video with them helping you. also the weather changing to how good or bad you are is a nice touch in my opinion (I bet when I'll be playing it Africa will have endless floods).

Gears is not an fps...
He's right on this one.
Although what about the new Red Faction?
The BETA is amazing!but its kinda half TPS half FPS, a bit like oblivion..
does that still count?
You fell into the same pit - Red Faction is a third person shooter too.

As for Call of Duty:World at War, I refuse to acknowledge that game until they put some fucking Australians in.
I refuse to acknowledge any Odd number CoDs since the crap that was CoD3, only IW CoD games for me.

Far Cry 2 looks great, but even with my Monster PC, the reqs are daunting.

To people who say Far Cry, Crysis, etc are tech demos... I'll have you know that most of my friends said that until they actually played Crysis and used the suit functions. Now they are hooked. To each his own, though.

I think many of you are forgetting one shooter, though:

Left 4 Dead.

I, for one, will be picking up Crysis Warhead. I'll wait for Far Cry 2 to give me a demo to see how well it runs.

Daunting? The recommended specs are:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo Family, AMD64 X2 5200+, AMD Phenom or better
Memory: 2GB
Video card: NVIDIA 8600 GTS or better, ATI X1900 or better
512 MB of graphics memory

If I didn't already have that, I'd think twice about calling it Monster... Quite honestly, the specs are lower than I expected based on the screenshots.

As for Left 4 Dead...yes. Valve hasn't let me down yet, and I don't expect it to happen now. Far Cry 2 could go either way for me, as Ubisoft has a nasty habit of taking the PC versions and injecting consolitis (no quicksave, less than ideal controls, no quicksave). I've already pre-ordered Crysis: Warhead, and expect to love it as much as the first.

Well I thought they were a lot more than Crysis, but looking them up, I guess not so much. Crysis needs more GPU.

And yes, I do have a great machine that I refer to as monster, 2GB RAM, AMD 6000+, and 2x8800GT 512Mb in SLI.

It's just after Crysis, seeing how it runs and seeing some of the same requirements... I mean it should have anyone a bit squeemish.

I guess you are right, but I'm still waiting for reviews and/or demo. Crysis Warhead and L4D are already pre-ordered, though :)

Well, you certainly can call that monster! I was just thinking that if needing an 8600 made you scared, things would be a bit incongruous. That's about what I have (substitute Core2 and 9600s), but back on topic now...

Crysis tried to make more realistic environments, so there were fewer 'blow you away' lighting and filtering effects like in the much more stylized Far Cry 2. Not that one is better than the other, though. I think Far Cry 2 looks great, and from what I've read, should be great. My only worry is leaving it in the hands of Ubisoft (I may just be bitter that they ruined such a great concept like XIII. OK, I'm pretty sure I'm still bitter about that one.)

Well graphics will be nice. But it will be, just another Far Cry. It's not like it's Half-Life. Far Cry is unique because it was set in a "living jungle". But that is it.

Halo brought us decent online multiplayer for console.
Killzone had a good thing going, but it was badly executed.
Goldeneye 64 brought us the modern FPS era which has hardly evolved any since then. Great game.
Half-Life is what keeps FPSs going these days. it's all around awesome.
Far Cry, like Killzone, had a good thing going but failed in the end.
Battlefield has awesome ideas, execute them greatly. But to make us less happy they add some errors now and then.

Also Crytech or whatever they call themselves are flippin sellouts.

Might I dig deeper to ask how Crytek is a sellout? I mean, they obviously created a very high end gaming experience that obviously shut them out of a lot of markets.

When I think sell out, I think Wii + Nintendo's last E3 event.

If CryTek actually made a proper decent game that felt complete that wasnt just about showing off and experimenting perhaps i would think about FarCry 2, i didnt mind the first FarCry but it became irritating and all the same, and the one for the xbox wasnt much of a success either, you want a game that you can experiment with which shows off good visual at the same time i would choose Gmod.

Gmod is a completely different game from Crysis or Far Cry. Unless, of course, you are considering the Crysis tinkering tools where you can make your own maps or settings or stuff.

Gmod is an "Incredible Machine" like game. Crysis is a shooter that allows you options to do what you want with the use of a nanosuit.

One way I feel hyped about the successor to one of the best FPS of all time - Far Cry, but seeing what Ubisoft has been doing for the past years I really feel a nasty aftertaste and I have somewhat some doubts about Far Cry 2.
What worries me most is the PC port. Ubisoft hasn't lately been very good with those and sometimes it's ended up with ahideous result.
I just don't want another broken ass game that will take years for the dedicated fans to fix.

Somehow there's the unspoken obligation that the PC port of the game has to be the superior version simply because FPS games on PCs have a higher standard compared to console derivatives.

Oh, and also, Far Cry 2 has NOTHING to do with CryTek. Crytek is NOT developing Far Cry 2 nor are they using the CryEngine.

Question is if CryTek made the right choice letting UbiSoft develop Far Cry 2, then again, I've not really been happy with what CryTek has been doing to their games lately either.
I mean Crysis was not a bad game - I'm not saying Crysis was a "sux0rs CryEngine tech demo" either, but compared with Far Cry 1, Crysis was substandard to the franchaise.
The most hyped PC game of all time? 10 levels instead of 20? Smaller maps? 8 hours of gameplay instead of +20? Less enemies? Super-weapon that can only be used on the last boss? Cliffhanger ending? Something smells fowl about it...

I just hope that UbiSoft ends up doing a good PC port and that the game isn't substandard to Far Cry 1.

Far Cry 2 looks to have amazing tech behind it and will have an interesting feel, but yes, I agree with the PC being a port this time instead of being a platform. If that's true, that's going to suck.

I'm gonna stick with Warhead.
