Anything that Don Bluth had a hand in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Bluth
Check out his filmography towards the bottom of the page. I'd recommend:
Titan AE
Both American Tales
Anastasia
The Land Before Time
All Dogs Go To Heaven (although that can be a little bit weepy in places)

I miss his work in todays modern animation films, seriously fantastic works of art in his characters and backdrops

The Little Mermaid and The Rescuers if you want to go with animation and The Neverending Story otherwise.

The Labyrinth was hands down my most cherished childhood movie. It was made by Jim Henson and had great songs too.

Fox and the Hound, and Bambi. Cute little animals will always have a special place in a young girls heart. Oh, and The Little Mermaid, loved that one as a kid.

You should also consider The Chronicles of Narnia: The Loin, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I know its not a classic and it is a kid's book but it is a fantastic movie and soon to become a classic. I actually like the movie better than the book in this case.

One of my favorites was the animated version of The Hobbit. It's fun, exciting, and has nice original music. It's easy to find on DVD.

I know there's no accounting for taste, but from age about...I dunno, 8, up to today, I must have seen Dragonheart over ten times.

Don't ask me why, but I still have a big soft spot for that movie, and it's not all that inappropriate, depending on your interpretation...definitely not as likely to induce nightmares as Watership Down, which I saw someone recommend earlier. WD is a great movie, just...not for its originally intended audience.

EDIT: I look at the movies I liked as a kid, and I was hard-pressed to find redeeming qualities in any of the non-Disney stuff (the occasional gem like the first few Land Before Time movies not withstanding) I enjoyed that was contemporary at the time. Some say the 80's are a cultural wasteland, but I think the 90's are more so. I mean...I thought stuff like Space Jam was the SHIZZ as a kid, but I look at it through a more educated and discerning lens, and it's difficult to see what I saw in such films. Rant over.

I had alot but I'll just do the top 3.

The Land Before Time
The Secret of Nimh
The animated "Robin Hood" were Robin is a Fox(literally).

If you Haven't Seen "The Secret of Nimh" I suggest you do. It is a beautifully drawn animation that still holds up today on more than nostalgia. You can watch it on Hulu I believe.

I remember watching the Aristocats with my sister, it was a fun movie, not in my top 3, but up there.
