Everyone has a genre or two that they hold above all others. For me, I'd have to pick shooters (FPS, 3PS, shooter/rpg included) since they've taken up most of my gaming time for as long as I can remember. My list of games is below. I thought about including GTA3, but I think that would be a different category.

These are the life-altering shooters that I've played in chronological order:

Duck Hunt > Doom 2 > N64 Goldeneye > Resident Evil 2 > PC Counter-Strike > Half-Life 2 > Gears of War 2

What about you guys/gals? Let's see your fav genre and favorite all time titles in chronological order that you played them.

I like action/adventure/ games that have a really good story.

Games like Metal Gear Solid and Mass Effect really stood out.

I know MGS is a stealth game but I'm not really that big a fan of the genre so :p

MGS2 > MGS3 > MGS4 > Mass Effect > Mass Effect 2 > Mass Effect 3 > MGS Peace Walker!

I really like visual novel sort of games. I don't go out of the way looking for them, probably because they're hardly released outside Japan but my two favourite games Persona 4 and the Ace Attorney games are at least partly visual novels.

I like Open World RPGs. Emphasis on the RPG part. Skyrim is laughable as an actual RPG for example, the "dialogue" system is nearly always the continue quest button and there is rarely more than one way to finish a quest.

Now Fallout: New Vegas on the other hand... Fuckin' love that game

I can't pick just one genre, I'm afraid, so I'll go for three.

For shooters, it's Spec Ops: The Line. A shooter that isn't just "USA R THE GREETEST" and that actually takes a thoughtful, interesting look at the horrors of war, PTSD, the relationship between the player and the player character, and critiques the entire modern warfare subgenre? Yes please! It's the first AAA holistic game, where everything fits the mood and the tone it's trying to create. Even the shooting, which would feel clunky and outdated in any other shooter, is here purposefully made to be that way to give the player the feeling that something isn't right, and that is an absolute work of genius.

For fighters, it's Blazblue: Contiuum Shift Extend. Great fighting, good story, amazing music, and some of the best characters in gaming. Makoto and Arakune are easily some of my all time favourite characters. Also, it's got a lot of funny extra segments, some tearjerkers, and a few really disturbing scenes. Seriously, one of them is a character essentially being mentally raped, I couldn't watch it. Scarring as that is, it's certainly a testament to the writing that they can make me feel so creeped out by it, and the villans are so evil that they're really fun to hate on and beat the crap out of.

For RPGs, it's Mass Effect 2. Honestly, it may be my favourite game of all time. The music is amazing, the characters really do feel like real people, the gameplay is flawed but fun, and the story is pretty good too. And the suicide mission is, IMO, the best final mission in gaming history. The music, the tone, the stakes, the choices you have to make, it's amazing. Ok, there's planet scanning, but I can overlook that when everything else is so good. I still remember that krogan poet trying to get his asari girlfreind to like him again. I hooked them up. If a Mass Effect game came out with 3's gameplay, 2's music and writing, and an upgraded version of 1's planetary exploration, it would be the perfect game.

Hm well I've played more shooters than other in the past, and I still do play some so I guess that's what I play the most... I'm not a big RTS fan, the only one I ever play and enjoy is Men of War series. Skyrim is my favorite RPG, and SimCity 4 my favorite simulation game (hopefully to change in february 2013! <3).

Shooters I played a heck of a lot, or would say have had an impact on me are;

Counter-Strike, Battlefield 1942, Ghost Recon, Battlefield: 2142, CoD 4: MW, Project Reality (mod for BF2), Battlefield 3..

I enjoyed shooters when I was younger, but the massive innovations and improvements made by Thief, Deus Ex, and Half Life really stand out for me.

captcha - don't waste time.

For me, easily Japanese RPGs. Many wonderful titles, but in terms of truly special games, my favs would be Dragon Quest V, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Xenogears, the Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts 1, and Persona 3.

Final fantasy 1>Final fantasy 6> Legend of legaia >Persona4> Lost oddessey.

Lost oddessey is the first game that made me realise that video games can convey emotion . It's the first time i felt truely sad and connected to a protagonist while playing a game .

Persona 4 kindled my love for SMT dungeon crawler games , and that made grind fun, all while having a great story told in a different way than standard jrpgs

Legend of legaia is my personal favorite game , adding a new spin to jrpg combat

Final fantasy 6 has one of the best most engaging stories ive ever played . With a wide cast of characters each with their own personality and quirks . Addthe best video game villain ever , and we got a winner .

Final fantasy 1 started me into the genre that i love so much today . It brings a tear to my eye knowing square has fallen from grace .

WRPGs:
Baldur's Gate II - nothing has felt so epic for me since.
Knights of the old Republic - hands down the best, most awesome story twist ever.
Mass Effect 2 - more action than RPG, but most of the characters were just mindblowingly awesome. Mordin will be forever memorable.
Skyrim - Unmatched sense of a living, breathing world, where exploration everywhere is uniformly interesting. Companion AI is severely lacking, and combat could use more depth, but the flexibility of character building, and the tons and tons of people to talk to and town, caves and set pieces to explore just make it unforgettable.

Third person action games:
Max Payne - The story telling, bullet time (when it was new) and the mood of the entire game was just startlingly awesome.
Path of Neo - The only decent Matrix Games, and for some reason the combat system just clicked we me with its' variation, kick-assery etc
Bayonetta - my favorite combo based combat system to date. It had a myriad of combos, that were unique for each of the maaaany weapons, you could start a combo, dodge mid-combo and then finish the combo, all special abilities were based on combat perfomance, animations never ever prevented control, dodging was more fluent than any other action game, and the protagonist had a nice character arc. I didn't care much for the sexualization - the balls out crazy action and the combat was enough.

Shooters: Half Life 2 (+ episodes) and Bioshock.

RPGS: Mass Effect series, far and away my favourite.

Tower defence: Orcs Must Die.

Puzzle games: Portal (1+2).

Platformers: Mirror's Edge. (Weird choice, I know.)

P&C Adventure: The Walking Dead and THe Longest Journey.

Turn-Based Strategy: X-Com and SIlent Storm (I'm more into small squad based strategy games rather that 'grand strategy' a la Civilisation.)

Horror: Amnesia: The Dark Descent

"Art Games" or whatever you want to call them: The Path and Journey.

I'm an RPG fan for life. If it has stats and loot, I'll probably enjoy it at least a little. I guess to make a list of the ones that felt game changing to me, in order, it'd be...

Pokemon Silver - Introduced me to the genre, and the first game I actually owned.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - The first plot-oriented game I owned, and my first SRPG.

Final Fantasy I & 2: Dawn of Souls - Introduced me to the console style jRPG, and the FF series. As well as the greatest class ever ; Red Mage.

Final Fantasy VI - One of my favourite games of all time.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - The first wRPG I played, and the first time I played a PS3 or XBOX 360.

Persona 3: FES - One of the most unique RPGs ever, and my first SMT game.

SMT: Nocturne, Final Fantasy Tactics, Dragon Quest VIII, Fallout 3 and Mount & Blade - Didn't introduce me to anything, but still some of my favourite games.

RPGs I enjoy/feel are significant, but not to me in particular:

Ultima
Dragon Quest
Ultima IV
Megami Tensei
Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy IV
Baldur's Gate
Fire Emblem 4
Pokemon RGB
Planescape: Torment
Finalk Fantasy VII
TES III: Morrowind
Mass Effect
