Paprika.

If 'The Watchmen' shows non-comic peeps what a graphic novel is capable of then 'Paprika' does the same for anime. A stunning film with a haunting, beautiful soundtrack that gets me just thinking about it.

There are two Ghibli movies that I would consider my favourites

One is Nausicaa of The Valley of The Wind, I love the visual design in this movie, for 1984, this animation is fucking SPECTACULAR everything is animated beautifully, and its such a wonderful story, it manages something so many films cannot, sending across an environmental message without any flower child bullshit, and I think that's why I love it so much

The second is not a Miyazaki movie, but I prefer it to any of his work, Grave of the Fireflies. This is so beautiful, it is so wonderfully written, and by god, this shit is... Fucking heartbreaking.
You love these kids, you want to see them get through their problems, and seeing them die is both horrific, and, it speaks volumes about the hardships these people went through in the war

Overall, it's the most powerful animated movie, and one of the most powerful anti war films ever made.

Akira.
It's really long and some parts might not have aged too well but by the end of it you're so exhausted from unknowingly sitting on the edge of your seat that you're not sure you can get up to take the DVD out.
Plus the music is pretty cool.

It's a three way tie for first place. One would be Waltz with Bashir. If you haven't seen it then you really should. It's like watching a sad dream, and the musical score is just whipped topping.

Another is The Place Promised In Our Early Days. Every time anime starts looking like a dilapidated sewer of jailbait/Lolita fanservice Makoto Shinkai always makes me feel better.

The third on in the overcrowded first place spot would be a Scanner Darkly. A Scanner Darkly proves three things. 1. Keanu Reeves has acting talent. 2. American animation for grown ups should be taken more seriously, and 3. American animation for grown ups will probably always be underrated. I'm gonna blame Japanophiles who won't even look at anything that wasn't made in Japan. Why? Because willfully ignorant people piss me off. now go cuddle with a Haruhi love pillow you sad deranged bunch.

please note the last few sentences were meant in good fun

Easy. I can list my top five right now and, oddly enough, four of them are fairly recent and by the same studio.

5: Up
4: Ratatouille
3: Wall-E
2: Iron Giant
1: Toy Story 3

(The Incredibles is just barely nudged out of the list)

Frankly, I consider Pixar to be not only the best animators in the industry, but by far some of the best story tellers in film making. Save for Cars and A Bugs Life (arguably their weakest films, but still leagues better than most animated films), their films are timeless classics. There are few other film makers that can elicit so much emotion and personality from what are digital renderings of monsters, cartoonish creatures (and humans), and even inanimate objects.

Ironically, the Iron Giant was directed and co-written by Brad Bird. The same man who directed Ratatouille. (and is usually involved with directing or writing most of Pixars films)

I also have to add that I am also an avid admirer of Hayao Miyazaki's films. From Spirited Away to My Neighbor Totoro to Howl's Moving Castle. The man was one of the most brilliant animators I've ever seen.

The Lion King is definetly my favourite animated film of all time.

Toy Story 3, Wall-E and UP are up there too though just behind it.

Does The Nightmare Before Christmas count? It's not animated, but quite similar with it's style and music.
