Keima Katsuragi, hands down.
Just as awesome as Lelouch, just in a different way.
Lelouch is a close second. (0.00000000000000000000000000456 difference in rating)
and then the third would be someone who is steadily attempting to overtake Lelouch with shear hilarity: Nagihara Sora.
My brain cannot handle the hilarity even in diminished brain memory format.
Fourth is Hachibei Maeda
Fifth is Shino Amakusa
and if I went on the world would end before I finished.

One of the few anime characters that not only didn't annoy the shit out of me, but who I also liked. Legitimately a great character.

I am going to go ahead and say gatts (or gutts) from Berserk. Now what makes him such a facinating character is how he changes as the series continues forward starting off very mentally distraught and slowly slowly working his way out of his shell with encouragment and character development and even manages to find love just to have it all striped aaway in front of his eyes and his journey to decide between trying to regain all that was taken or get revenge. Very rarely do you ever get a chance to see such character development its really beautiful true talent that writter has!

Graham Specter from Baccano! You can't really describe him, so here's a clip of him being awesome:

And, here he is expressing his views on tedium:

Don't really have one.

However, were I to choose, then...

Snip

Sure there are a couple others...
Balsa was the first character to pop into my mind. I would either have to be her or Lucy from the Elfen Lied manga (not anime).

Agreed as per my initial post.

But did you notice that both Guts and Griffith got EXACTLY what they really wanted?
Griffith wanted power. Guts only lived to fight.

The world that Griffith/Femto created gave himself immeasurable power and Guts a reason to never stop fighting...
Actually I didn't really think about that. That is a great observation! ahhh man so few people have read berserk its great to be talking to somebody who knows what they are talking about!

Same anime.

But Isaac and Miria are just so much more fun!

ETA: Also, every single racoon from Pom Poko. (also edited in spoiler tags for the animated gifs)
