I haven't watched many animes, but The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is definitely my favorite. Followed closely behind is Spirited Away, Azumanga Daioh, and Chobits, as short as it was.

I wonder how many sniper rifles would be pointed at my forehead if I tried to claim that Pokemon is an anime...

I swear I've answered this question several times before here...

Favorite anime to watch dubbed so I can understand what the hell is going on: Star Blazers (a.k.a. Space Battleship Yamato)

Favorite anime to watch non-dubbed and non-subtitled because I really don't WANT to understand what the hell is going on: Urotsukidōji. Or, as I called it when I first saw it (non-dubbed, non-subtitled) back in college, "Demons, Sex, and Basketball."

Frighteningly enough, both of these were produced by the same person - Yoshinobu Nishizaki.

Berserk is my fave anime of all time
The manga is vastly better which is a shame, if anything the anime only covered the relatively boring bits.

One of my favourites has to be Gintama, it's stupidly funny.

Ooh... hard to say since for me, there are so many, but I'll mention a few: almost anything by Hayo Miyazaki, Digimon, Bleach (though I'm starting to think it's dragging on a bit too much), Axis Powers Hetalia, Rurouni Kenshin, Buso Renkin, Yu-Gi-Oh (no, really), Fullmetal Alchemist, ect. Personally, I prefer dubbed anime, but that's just me.

Clannad. This show was fully of great humor, fantastic characters, and genuine emotion. EVERYONE cries for like the last half of After Story (the second and final season). Amazing show that will kill you emotionally and make you cry in every movie you watch afterward. Soooo good.
Did you play the game it?s based on? It?s also grate!
Just got it a while ago, actually. Once I'm done with the games I'm working on right now, I'm definitely playing it multiple times, through each story arc. :D

I'd definitely have to go with Outlaw Star. Absolutely loved that one but never seemed to be very popular. Another one would be Gundam Wing.

Current all-time fav: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (Season 1, A's, & Strikers)

Other series on my list:
Umineko no Naku Koro ni
Black Lagoon (probably the only dub I care for)
Shuffle!

It is an anime, but I grant it exception to my usual exclusion of anime when listing cartoons I watched as a kid (note: if it wasn't obvious, I have nothing against anime, but many seem out of place in such listing).

To play devil's advocate, it's generally agreed that Death Note went downhill after L died. Also, "true" Gundam fans would give you a lecture on why Wing is plotless bishonen tripe and how earlier series (Zeta is often cited) are better (not saying I agree, just stating for the sake of dissent).

cowboy bebop or lupin the 3rd
While I haven't watched the Lupin the 3rd series, I have to say that Castle of Caglistro is great, even with the Streamlined [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StreamlinePictures] dub (which I didn't notice until I read about it). Of course, it's by Miyazaki, so it goes without saying.

Oh, and since I neglected to say so earlier, watch Baccano dubbed. The first episode will confuse you, but I was hooked from the start of the second episode (Isaac and Miria are made of win).

Edit:

Naruto, English dubbed. I just really can't be bothered reading the subtitles because it can draw my attention away from the fight scenes for a second or so which is a bit annoying at times.

Cowboy Bebop, with Samurai Champloo a close second.

I just love the characters, and I love the settings.

Man, four pages of posts, and only ONE other person likes Excel Saga? That's slightly depressing.

Also, to anyone who says they like "everything" by Studio Ghibli, you should go out and see Grave of the Fireflies. I saw that, expecting an uplifting story... and I got completely floored.

That movie is, without a doubt, the most DEPRESSING movie I have ever seen in my life. Seriously, I'm an upbeat kinda guy, and I was moping for DAYS after seeing it. Just... geez.
Excel saga is brilliant, the funniest shit i've ever watched, but yeah it is depressing that it hasn't been mentioned much.

Well I guess I'm different. I do belive Zeta was good it wasnt the best thou. I do belive as well that seed and the new ones just plain suck, and are trying to be like Zeta and the origina;, Wing was the only one that did something different but still had the same Gundam Message. Plus the who allusion to Pre and Post World War One and the Nazi uprise was cool.

Keep in mind Seed was essentially a remake of the original, so it really was trying to be like it.

I have an enduring love affair with the Slayers, though I am not keen on the new series (catchy music as always, though). I can take it subbed or dubbed, both have an awesome cast.

Trigun-A great older anime with good morals and one of my favorite villians ever(Legato. He wants to kill every human on the planet, himself included. That's dedication right there)

Big O-It's pretty much Batman with a mech. FUCKING BATMAN with a FUCKING MECH. Then they have the audacity to throw in some crazy psychological stuff in there and an ending that makes you question everything you've come to think while watching

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann-The end-all mech anime. Seriously.

RahXephon-I don't really know what to say about this one, because it's so odd, unique, and interesting.

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting, so I might come back with more later. On a side note, I never watch anime based on manga unless it's short, because they tend to drag on. I mean, it takes about three episodes to equal one manga chapter. Half the damn shows are just watching the combatants stare at each other and pant.
