I'm starting to play Fallout 1 now, and will move on to Fallout 2 and then Tactics soon afterward. So far, New Vegas is my favorite. I absolutely hated Fallout 3, though.
I can't say i hated Fallout 3

but i definitely found it hard to get into...and then hard to stay interested in...

i just ended up getting bored honestly.

I have played some of Fallout: 1 + 2, however i definitely need to go back and give it another crack :)

I personally like fallout 3's broken steel. Just the atmosphere of destroying the enclave made me feel as though it were an excellent add on to the story line.

I wouldn't say I hated Fallout 3, there was a lot to like about it. There were, however, some immensely frustrating points. Foremost, the fact that I seemed to be the only one who realized that the player character's father was a frakking moron. Who nearly got me killed on multiple occasions. Thanks, dad.

Best part of the Bethesda engine'd Fallouts is ... the ridiculous mods some people have come op with.
They're downloadable, and they're content. So there.

It wasn't a game for me. I know it's weird that I can hate Fallout 3 and love New Vegas, but there are some things in the latter that made all the difference in the Mojave to me: a more compelling main story (I'm more of a story guy than a wandering around kind of guy. And I'm sick of daddy issues in media. It comes from watching every season of Lost marathon style) and the more varied landscape (as opposed to Fallout 3's endless dreariness and grey. That game seemed intent on depressing me with its atmosphere) were the big things. The faction system was also very cool to me because that's the exact kind of thing I'd been saying for a long time would have improved Oblivion. It was cool to see some random thing I wanted like that implemented.

i dont know if it was just me...

but i also struggled with the difficulty of Fallout 3 early on...

Whereas NV had a more balanced curve...

Also i knew pretty much what i had to do and where to go...whereas in 3...i was often walking into the wrong dungeon and down the wrong path...

got frustrated...

Yay for other Utahns reading the Escapist.
I love the New Vegas environment and all the weapons and fun, but it is a really tough pick between Fallout 1 and 2.

Fallout 1 was one of the first rpg's I'd played for long periods of time and actually understand what was going on.

Fallout 2 really added on to the whole experience and didn't feel too much different. Just a simple continuation or "sequel" of the story that worked amazingly.

Fallout 3 and my favorite is probably Point Lookout as well because i think that's where i got the Clown Mask (Pint-Sized Slasher Mask) along with the Toy Knife and went on a crazy killing spree while acting like that scary clown from IT.
obviously the dev's intended this as a crucial junction in the narrative flow......just saying haha

ahh...so much fun to be had
True haha. I had trouble though finding the right outfit to go along with the clown mask though. I think this was the best i could do.

it looks close enough to what a fan of Insane Clown Posse might wear....

Your on the right track :D
I thought so too lol. I wished I was able to find a mod to make the perfect crazy serial killer clown outfit though...now i just realized i have to question why do i want my character to act like the thing i hate the most (beside insects) XD.

Probably an example of deep seeded masochism...

you subconciously exposing yourself to your inner-most fears and dislikes as a way of validating your existence...

....or you just wanted to cause some havoc...haha

My favorite is Fallout 3. It was the first Fallout game I got into and I really loved. New Vegas just didn't have the same feel to me that Fallout 3 did. I don't really know why. But I love every Fallout game I've played. Fallout 1, 2, Tactics, 3, and New Vegas. All excellent games. Fallout is most definitely my favorite video game series by far.

The first explanation sounds like Batman. I hope for me it's just the second one lol.

Also Masochism, never heard of that word. Thanks for the clarification, learning something new everyday ftw! :D

I honestly can't decide between Fallout 2 and New Vegas. They're both exceptionally good for different reasons that have been posted by others earlier on in the thread.

Fallout 3 is my favorite game of all time. I loved the political messages, exploring the subways, and finding chinese spies in the most random places.

My favorite dlc is broken steel. Getting to fight along side Liberty Prime again was awesome. And, the finishing off the Enclave was so satisfying.

New Vegas, for being the Van Bauern we were all denied so long ago. Not like that pretender that calls itself Fallout 3.

I'm one of those lucky people who experienced next to no problems with Fallout New Vegas. It was a wonderful gaming experience for many reasons that I won't go into right now, but it has a lot to do with how strong the narrative was, and how powerful the payoff was at the end. Didn't really play any of the DLC. Just not my thing, really. For me, the story's over when it's over.

Neither DLC takes place after the ending, mostly they are just side stories that are only tangentially connected to the main plot.
