Difficult but probably the Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Or of course Lord of the Rings.

It's got to be Discworld, I guess mainly because its so relevant to our world, while still being wild escapism, the way it deals with so many of the big questions, while still being entertaining and not feeling preachy, makes it number one for me, along with many other reasons, like it just being entertaining and funny, and great storylines and characters.

Oh hell yeah. Though my favorite writer of Drow stuff is R. A. Salvatore.

Drizzt Do'Urden or bust.

My favorite has to be the Enders Game series. I got into it a a young age and have read nearly every part of it.

Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce. Most amazing characters ever written. Seriously if I could pick to be one person in a book, it would be the main character in this Quartet, Alanna.

Just have to mention His Dark Materials series discussed earlier by a couple of posters. . . I thought they were awful!

For me, it'd be the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Well, it's not strictly sci-fi or fantasy, but there are elements of so many different genres and it makes it pretty different (in my opinion).
If that doesn't count, guess I'll have to be predictable and go with the Lord of the Rings...

To be more unique I'll say StarGate.

I would say Dune, but I've been watching StarGate SG-1 and I'm sure someone will say Dune eventually.

Most of mine have already been posted, so I'll mention one I'm currently reading. The Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson is just amazing. Great writing, thought provoking philosophy, very fleshed out characters, the series has it all really.
