Recently I noticed that not only that my entire music library was a sausage fest, but that I really liked Alanis Morissette so, what are your favorite female artists- Any genre/time.
Alanis is certainly near the top.

Garbage
Sarah McLachlan
Hole (particularly the post-Kurt era stuff)
Paramore
Evanescence
Bif Naked
Dub Star (British)
FlyLeaf (mildly Christian)
No Doubt
October Project
Tori Amos

That's most of the ones I can think of without digging through CDs. There's another British band on the tip of my brain, but I can't quite think of their name. Ah well.

Look up anything Amanda Palmer has done and you'll be happy. She is an amazing performer and a lovely person as well...

If you like psychobilly the the HorrorPops are the way to go...

Civet, Diamanda Galas and Madelaine Peyroux also come to mind, depending on your genre preferences.
The Sisters of Mercy - wait, no, this is the odd one out. Andrew Eldritch is a *****, though, does that count?
yes and no ... he is a horrible excuse for a *****, yes, but no one should debase women, or humans in general, by comparing that turd to them...
I still like his music though.

Say what you will about Amy Lee of Evanescence but the power of her voice could peel paint off the walls.

The Runaways, mostly because this photograph of Joan Jett [http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/73/Jett_Rocks.jpg] is probably the sexiest thing I've ever seen.

Don't ask me why. It's just awesome.

Martina Topley-Bird is my favorite female singer...
First heard of her from the Gorillaz... this is the live version because Roots Manuva is high while rapping...<.<

Edit: oh and the Kills too... they're pretty awesome...

Joni Mitchel or Aretha Franklin. I love Joni Mitchel because I really like her song writing style, especially for Don Juans Reckless Daughter album. And Aretha Franklin cause she really is the queen of soul, like Jimi Hendrix, you mostly go through the live stuff.

Well all the girls in Gallhammer sing, so I don't know if that counts.

Ai Otsuka is also one of my favorite singers. Her vocal range goes from light hearted PoP to PoP Rock and then beautiful ballads such as this one.

Amanda Palmer [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea18wSkrK5g], for sure. Oh, and Garbage [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_bo7dHgz1g]. And definitely Chrissy Hynde, from The [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YA3hZEDPNI] Pretenders [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF_kUB_mdmA].

Alison Mosshart.

She has the best female voice in rock imo.

Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane has to be mentioned.

Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife and Fever Ray is also amazing.
