Is it s bit old hat of me to say Dusty Springfield?

Or for that matter, any number of female African American jazz singers from the past?

... I don't know all that much about modern music.

Besides those that have been mentioned, I think Kim Gordon is the coolest.

My two favourite female singers are Maria Brink of In This Moment (she's the best scream/singing combo I've ever heard) and Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil Women I rate after those two are Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Wessels (Delain) and Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy). I prefer metal vocalists to those that can JUST sing, but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I'm ashamed to admit that I also think Celine Dion has an excellent voice.

Siouxsie and the Banshees here, Siouxsies songs are very unique sounding, Peek-a-boo for example features backwards playing instruments, 4 different microphones being used for her voice and accordian playing :D

I will say that her music can take some getting used to.

Heavy Metal bands with women at vocals?

Not just limited to Nightwish and Symphonic metal!

Sacrilege
Holy Moses
Decadence

And how many of you knew that the wives of Dream Theater put together a thrash metal outfit called Meanstreak?

I went through my mp3 folder, not much female singers there, but nevertheless, my clear winner would be (drumroll):

Category "I like it rough (but not too hardcore)":
Brody Dalle from the Distillers.
Honorable mention: Courtney Love / Hole

Category "I can also be posh":
Natalie Dessay (classical singer, i love her "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen")

And in the category "I like it, but I won't listen to it all day long":
the Morning Musume (the 4 or 5 first generations)
Honorable mention: Ai Otsuka

While I agree with alot of you on the Garbage call, it doesn't seem alot of people have mentioned Nina and The Cardigans.
