Fiddler from Malazan Book of the Fallen - "We are all lone souls. It pays to know humility, lest the delusion of control, of mastery, overwhelms. And, indeed, we seem a species prone to that delusion, again and ever again."

Tyrion from A Song of Ice and Fire - "Never forget who you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you."

Logen Ninefingers from The First Law - "You have to realistic about these things."

Oh, Satan from Paradise Lost and on a related note, Sephiroth from FF7 and Tyler Durden from Fight Club.

I'll say Lord Vetinari from the Discworld series, for showing that a Machiavellian approach can work.
For an honourable mention, Karan S'jet from Homeworld.

Oh God, well let's see. In games it is Samus Aran, easily.

I'm pretending Other M didn't happen, by the way. It's the best option.

In other media, it's probably Scott Pilgrim. He's so loveably naive and I kind of wish I was like him. But we can pretend I didn't say that last part.

Titus Andronicus, title character of Shakespere's least respected tragicomedy,
V from V for Vendetta,
Jackie Brown from Jackie Brown,
And Ichigo from Bleach. I don't even like anime, but I saw one episode where he killed a bunch of bad guys and thought he was cool.

My favorite is probably Magnus the Red of Warhammer 40,000. He's such a tragic villain and he commanded my favorite Legion of Space Marines.

I'd have to go with the one and only: Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth.

If you have never played Final Fantasy 4 (Final Fantasy 2 on the Snes) then consider this your spoiler warning.

My pick is the Dark Knight Cecil Harvey. Forced into walking a dark path by his King, who is the only father figure he had ever known, he never lost his sense of right and wrong. He shows contrition for the deaths of innocents at the hands of both his soldiers and himself at the command of his king, later turning himself over to the elder of the town he had attacked for judgement. He even defends a child he barely knows from his own country men, a child who hates him for causing the death of not only her mother but her entire village.

In the long list of Final Fantasy characters, I have always considered Cecil to stand above the rest when it comes to a character with development and for showing true humanity. He is emotionally distraught at the deaths of his friends and the sacrifices they make in the battle to stop a man who would later turn out to be his brother. The hatred he feels for this man nearly breaks him when he finds out it was his own brother that he had hated so vehemently. Throughout the years, this story has always stuck with me, despite having returned to play the game to banish the fog of nostalgia.

Sorry dude, but Ichigo is NOT the coolest character in Bleach. And to prove you wrong, and more importantly, prove myself right, I show you Ulquiorra and Aizen,

OP, I'd have too say that the coolest fictional character ever is Sebastian from Kuroshitsuji. Because it's true. (Don't tell Saxton Hale I said that)

Kanaya from Homestuck.

She's probably the most sophisticated and nicest of the trolls, but she's flawed and carries around a chainsaw.

Elvira, Mistress of The Dark. Whole reason I liked goth girls from a young age.

(For those who wish to nitpick, the actress's name is Cassandra Peterson. Elvira is a stage persona and thus qualifies.)

The Doctor is an obvious one, though he is aboslutely brilliant and one of the most legendary Sci-Fi figures of all time. IF you need more convincing then look here:

You took the words right out of my mouth.
