Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (me and my sisters would constantly play that, and because I was older, it was my system and I was better, the honor of not playing as Tails went to me.)

Also, Golden Axe 2 was inexplicibly popular for the same reason. Me playing the stubby green little dwarf, whoever was playing with me playing as the magic-user who'd pick up the bottles and summon dragons when we needed it.

Good times. Good times.

Wolfenstein 3D and Doom were my first real games as a child, and probably had some horrible effect on my young, 5 year old mind, but it wasn't worse than watching Full Metal Jacket or Heavy Metal so I can't reall complain about that.

I also have fond memories of watching my brother play Resident Evil and RE2 on our tiny, 16" TV that resembled something from Fallout. To me, Chris Redfield was gaming's first badass, his grizzled, slightly crazed image graced our copy of the game's director's cut and at the time seemed to be the epitome of manliness.

Finally, I remember my first forays into the world of RTS games with Starcraft and Homeworld. The latter probably being my favorite game of all time. It's expansive maps and halfway decent storyline grabbed me by my prepubescent mind and would not let go until I was spending hours trying to get past the Gardens of Kadesh.

but the original Zoombinis will always have a special place in my heart. I loved that game when I was in second grade, missed it for years when they took it off the school computers, and got more enjoyment out of it than I should really admit to when I finally got the chance to buy it for myself six years later.
ZOOMBIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINIVILLE!

Ah, good times.

I also forgot to mention "Jazz Jackrabbit." Surprising to learn 10 years later that those who made Jazz also made Unreal Tournament.

I didn't play video games as a child; heck, I was twelve the first time I saw a Trash-80 in a store window and Dad (despite working at a Fortune 50 tech company at the time) didn't see much point in getting home electronics. And I had to walk six miles to school through the snow, wind in my face both ways...

In my 'tweens/teens, though, arcade games like Spy Hunter, Defender (I sucked at that one), Battlezone, Zaxxon, Bosconian, Qbert, and the like kept me quarter-poor. Later on we got a C=64c (Dad won it as a door prize at a company Christmas dinner) and that led to Impossible Mission, Space Taxi, Gunship, and Red Storm Rising binges.

Earliest games I played were some old hockey games on the PC, and duck hunt and mario on Nintendo...

my other childhood favorites were (i don't recall exactly when these all existed, so they might also be early teenager):
Sonic games
Mech Warrior 2 (mentioned previously)
Star Con 2 (had star con 1 also but it sucked except for melee)
Lands of Lore
Doom
Wolfenstein 3d
Duke Nukem
Monkey Island 1
Wing Commander 1
