So as a writer and a game designer I am creating companions and characters that i hope the players will forever enjoy. But with writing these characters I'm curious to see what everyones favorite person in games are. For me it has always been Oghren from Dragon age as my top character. So whats yours?

I divided my choices between male and female. Dunno why but I've always done this division when it comes to naming my favorite characters. So for me its constantly fluctuating between 2 in each category, but ever since 1997/98 it's always been the same 2 for both categories

Male - Cloud(FF VII) and Link (Legend of Zelda)

Female - Tifa (FF VII) and Ayane (DOA/NG)

what type of game are you looking to make? A western high fantasy RPG?

No its kind of a mix between a medieval and Renaissance style for the first game but we plan to take that and move over time to eventually a mix between magic and future tech. We are looking at one of our weapons in the future as a massive battle axe with a shotgun in the hilt so when you swing you can turn it around and then fire or shoot behind you. Its a massive rpg single player and the two games that it was inspired by is Final Fantasy and Dragon Age. We are trying to go with the nice realistic art style of final fantasy with a bit of a grunge/imperfection that dragon age did so well in my book.

And then we added a bit of an rts element to be the "asshole" character and destroy every race by conquering them and taking their castles. Its gonna be a small sort of rts element but it will be their.

What we have been worried about is our character development we have some unique characters but at the same time i feel that there personalities have been over used so I am curious to see what people say about their favorite characters in games so i can kind of draw off what their saying.

This sounds super cool. Do you have a name yet?

OT, I'd say humanly flawed characters (think Joel from The Last of Us). I think as long as your character is realistically written and organic you'll create a great companion. Endearing characters are always a plus.

Edit: Wow. I totally misread that. Sorry.
I really like practically all the characters in FE: Awakening, Link (clearly), GlaDOS, Cave Johnson, Nathan Drake, Mass Effect's entire cast, still Joel, Ellie, and John Marston. (who didn't like him[footnote]That's a hypothetical, mind you.[/footnote])?

He's stylish, fun, and still can be serious and has character development in 3 at least. Though I still enjoy his over the top wackyness in 4 as well.

Hey kids! It's "who's your favorite character?" thread and you all know what that means! It's time to talk again about the greatest character of all time-Ch-Ch-Chie Satonaka!
<img src=http://download.minitokyo.net/Chie.Satonaka.586987.jpg>
-So, little fella, what do you like about Chie most?
-I like that she's so bright and upbeat and always the one to cheer up the group when they hit another wall!
-Great answer! And what about you? What do you like about Chie?
-I love that she is actually the most regular member of Investigation Team! She doesn't have any crazy background or insane job, like teen-idol or kid-detective, and yet she is the most noticeable member!
-I love that! Oh hey there, you want to add to that too?
-YEAH! I love that despite all her cheerfulness and brightness she also has the darkest and the most fucked-up Shadow!
-Now, kids shouldn't use words like that, but I agree!
-And also I really really love her voice actress, Erin Fitzgerald! She managed to perfectly convey Chie's personality by being loud, energetic and even a little obnoxious!
-C'mere you little fella and let me hug you! So, what about you, person looking at the screen, would you like to tell us why you love Chie?

Yes it will be called the Clash of Legends thats the series name and then we have specific names for each of the 6 games we have planned for the series so far. Sadly it wont be done for another year at least.

Well after all my years I can't really pull out one definitive character as my all time favourite but... Phoenix Wright would come pretty close. His character arc over the first three games was amazing, if you're interested in how to write a trilogy well, this is a perfect example

Recently, imma go with Kazami Yuuji from... hold on this always gets me, Grisaia no Kaijitsu. Yeah that's the one, hardly the worst Japanese game name but my brain can't get over Grisaia as a word.

Basically he's a teenage, jaded, war solider mercenary kinda deal. Dropped into your standard lovey dovey Visual Novel schtick. It's hilarious and painful in equal measure and I quite enjoy his mannerisms, not to mention he's super competent at everything.

"Michiru, my friend. *insert vaguely insulting/overly blunt phrase here*"

I just have the image of him putting his hands on her shoulder(s) and delivering really sage-like advice with that opening line...

He's also tsundere as fuck without even noticing it. He occasionally slips into proper drill sergeant tirades of abuse over the weirdest things. Pretty interesting looking at things from the tsundere perspective y'know? It is my favourite character archetype after all.

Do I need to say at this point? My avatar, username, the series I won't shut up about. It's Link, it's always Link. Every form has something I like about him. My favorite would be Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask Link if I had to specify.

Male:
The Prince: I'll take either his The Sands of Time or his The Two Thrones character, but the Warrior Within and The Forgotten Sands variants are nowhere near as good. In both cases, he starts off with an immature notion that he is slowly forced to realize is wrong. At some point, he has a realization of the true nature of what he is searching for. The only real difference is that in The Sands of Time he is a little more childish and fun-loving, but he is more serious and adult-like in The Two Thrones.

Shulk (Xenoblade Chronicles): I see way too much of myself in Shulk. A geek who has trouble getting out and communicating with people but who also enjoys the company of his friends and is often a little too kind towards others, which often leads him to worrying a lot about what others think of him and carrying his and everyone else's burdens as well. He also has trouble accepting his friends' attempts to help him deal with his problems. Ultimately, it was very easy to identify with Shulk, and after spending 150 hours playing his game, it is sort of hard not to love him more than a vast majority of characters.

Yuri (Tales of Vesperia): Really, I just liked his incredibly snarky, sarcastic personality coupled with his more mature side that often took responsibility for his actions. He also has quite a bit of character development and noticeably struggles with questions regarding killing and taking the law into your own hands. He never answers all his questions, but he lives by the concept of taking responsibility, particularly later in the series, making him rather strong behind his less stable and more sarcastic sides. He also helps the people around him grow quite a bit.

Female:
Farah: She sort of acts as The Prince's good conscious in both The Sands of Time and The Two Thrones (especially the latter), and her presence, her arguments, and The Prince's love for her are the catalyst to his realizations of truth in both games. She also has a rather strong and independent personality that goes tremendously well with The Prince's own rather strong and independent personality. The two also often find themselves helping and being helped by each other, not just in the story, but in the gameplay as well (particularly in The Sands of Time). As a side character, part of my love for her does develop from how she relates to The Prince (a relationship simply unmatched in gaming), but I still find her to be a decently good character in her own regards.

Yeah, I really can't compare any other female characters to Farah the same way I compared the male characters, so I'll just leave her as the only one.

Wow well i got more ideas on what type of characters to look into now when im doing the full write up for my game. I still have one favorite character, we took the concept of a really badass orc soldier who fears nothing but in secret he has a thing for female dresses as in he loves to dress in drag and pretend hes a women.
So we thought we would try and push the boundaries as much as possible in our games especially with our new title that will hopefully be out in February of next year called Trailer Park Armageddon for the android and apple IOS market

Hmmmmmm... toughie.

I've never found narrowing down my favourite character to be a particularly easy task. In video games, at least: my favourite character in all of fiction is probably Eddie Dean, but he's never been in a game, so I can't use him.

You know, I think... I might have to say Vivi, from Final Fantasy IX. He has such a brilliant arc, has this kind of childlike wonderment about him, and his final appearance in the game is so heart-wrenching that it almost - almost, mind - made me consider possibly thinking about maybe beginning to tear up. He's certainly my favourite Final Fantasy character, and at the moment, I have no issue with calling him my favourite game character. He's the first character that popped into my head, at any rate, which is probably a good sign.

Cybil Bennett from Silent Hill has always been a favorite of mine. She's always portrayed as the police officer willing to die to protect others and , to me at least, had a very strong sense of morality held.

Oh this sounds like fun! Everyone loves Chie!

-I love how she always tries to protect those who can't protect themselves
-I love her never say die attitude
-Her interactions with <----- that guy are hilarious
-Like you said, her cheerful disposition really brightens up the group
-I love how she often stumbles onto the truth in group conversations and then gets embarrassed about it
-Finally her romance arc is super adorable and cute and is probably my favorite video game romance ever

Chie is awesome.

Now I'd like to volunteer a character from Persona 3 as another of my favorites.

What's so great about Aigis? Well let me tell you.

-She's a robot. With guns. And cannons. Everyone loves guns and cannons.
-She also has a jetpack
-Her initial lack of understanding about humans and conversation leads to some hilarious and awkward moments
-She becomes more and more human as the game progresses and this leads to her trying to determine her identity and purpose in life
=She has a jetpack
-Her strength and determination are unmatched, especially when she is defending her friends
-She's kind and loving
-She fiercely wanted to save and protect her sister that she hadn't even met before
-Did I mention she has a jetpack?

Honestly there are tons of great characters in video games that I love (and not just from Persona). These two are definitely up there with my favorites though.
