DOOM, Halo, Red Alert 2 (Tiberium Wars was a disappointment, audio-wise) and God Hand.

Woah, where to start...
Silent Hill OST (Akira Yamaoka is a genius in my book)
Max Payne OST
Hitman OST (Jesper Kyd is awesome!)
Prince of Persia OST
Oblivion OST
Portal OST (the ambient songs rule too)
Longest Journey and Dreamfall OST
Tomb Raider OST (from TR1-TR6)
Final Fantasy X OST (just a few songs, but still very good)

i know i'm gonna get slammed for this but honestly my favorite soundtrack was prince of persia: warrior within, i really felt it added to the feel of desperation and i've never been afraid of anything in a video game more than i was afraid of the dahaka, the music helped that, and the combat was made really fun by the guitary rock aspect of it.

i also am almost ashamed to say saints row had some great music in it, once i finally purchased all the music after going on a buying spree, i realized the rock section was actually pretty kick ass, i mean how many games have "bound for the floor" by local h as part of the soundtrack, not enough i'll tell ya.

i also really enjoyed the boss battle music from blue dragon but other than that not much music in the game stood out to me.

i supose i should admit though that i'm not a big fan of video game music myself, some of it works and is actually enjoyable but overall it tends to be a poor excuse for real music, i mean that honestly, BGM is just not as good as finding an actual song to capture the moment there's a little more art to it.

I agree with Silent Hill, excellent compliment with the game. Shadow of the Colossus, Koh Ohtani's stuff is epic.
What other soundtracks has he done?

Half Life 2 (plus episodes)
Halo
Silent Hill FTW
Halflife nearly doesn't have a soundtrack! When there is music its just run of the mill angry techno that can be heard in dozens of other games.
wow...guess there's no accounting for taste, lol.

I love the half-life soundtracks, every last one. The music covers a wide range of styles and always accentuates the mood of the scene it's playing in. Kelly Bailey has great musical talent.

I also loved the soundtracks to Mechwarrior 2 and it's ilk. Doom's is just classic. Halo's soundtrack was great in the first game. Loved the orchestral work, but two sequels' soundtracks were horrendous. Martin O'Donnell tried to hard to make them sound like an epic movie soundtrack but failed misserably. Last I guess I'd have to say most of Rare's games. Banjo Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day especially. There's just something about those little tunes in each of their games that makes me smile.

EDIT: nightmare gorilla reminded me, i loved the Prince of Persia: Sands of time soundtrack as well. The guitar work on it was top notch.

the fact is that I'm rather baffled at the fact that nobody has even mentioned, the katamari series. i mean, the fact is that the game itself was rather innovating (i mean roll around and pick stuff up) but also the fact is that the game itself had great music. also, (not to be a dick for ruining this for anyone) but still alive, the song that Glados sings at the end of portal is just as amazing. Sure, some say zelda (this is true OoT to be more precise) had amazing sound design for it's time and i was also rather impressed with the halo series soundtracks.

I have to agree, the music in POP: WW was good. I liked it as well. It fit the game.

WW's music was good, but SOT's music is perhaps the best in the series, with Two Thrones pretty close by. Honestly, even though WW's music was good, I felt that it did not match the setting very much, if at all, and that it tried a little too hard to be "edgy" and "dark" just to fit the mood. In fact, I feel that God of War's orchestral soundtrack would fit the mood more than WW's heavy metal soundtrack.

And judging by most fans' reactions to WW in particular, I'm definitely not alone here.

Some other notable soundtracks come from PSP Syphon Filter games (Dark Mirror and Logan's Shadow, the latter one composed by 300's composer Azam Ali), and Heavenly Sword's East Asian tunes (same composer).

One of the best that I have recently listened to is Uncharted: Drake's Fortune's OST, where the music really gets intense with the action and the main menu theme (Nate's Theme) is IMO so top-notch that it edges out Halo's main theme by a bit.

Other all time favorites:
Kingdom Hearts series
Final Fantasy VII
Oblivion
GTA: Vice City Stories (carried mainly by Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight)

I'd say Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes would be my favorite.
Too bad it was only free in Korea with the game.
I would have to buy the thing if I wanted it.
So, I just play the game when I feel like listening to the music.

Shadow of the Colossus has an outstanding soundtrack that fits the game's theme well. Epic orchestra for epic battle.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory soundtrack by Amon Tobin is incredible. I've not played the game, but I own the soundtrack!!

Grim Fandango had a marvelous soundtrack.

And no one should be allowed a post that doesn't include Vice City in there.

All together now - Never too much, never too much, never too much
