I love this song so much. It fits perfectly with fighting the Warden. Although the fights get a little too easy once you upgrade your powers, it's still fun to fight an enemy that can use the same powers as you across the city, accompanied by badass music.

Take all the best tracks from Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 4 Arena, put them together, then add a few new amazing tracks, and you simply cannot match Ultimax in terms of sheer volume of amazing music.
Which do you think had the better soundtrack: Persona 3 or 4?

While I can't hate on Reach Out to the Truth, I can't seem to get enough of those urban beats.

Since games have different styles of music, it's hard to pick just one. So I'll go with three.

Xenoblade Chronicles had a pretty incredible soundtrack, not positive if I'd consider it my favorite though.

Here's some of my favorites from it:

Never was a big fan of Spike in a Rail. My two favorites were these:

Great soundtrack in any case, it's pretty high up in my list as well

I could probably just spam Persona, but I won't do that. This song was of special importance to me, though. I love the way the soundtrack in P3 built up to the ending. The first half was poppy and upbeat, but the music became more delicate and thoughtful as the story became heavier. It wasn't meloramatic, but it was self reflective and made you think. Having a quiet moment with friends at the shrine near the end of the game really left a memory. I knew, then, how the story was going to end. it held special meaning to me, because the central theme of the game was death. I'd lost three family members over the course of a few months, and I'd been thinking a lot about life and death at the time. Exploring those ideas while playing Persona really made me connect with the story and characters. This piece sums up everything I loved about Persona. It's understated and sad, but beautiful.

Tifa's theme will always make me feel good. Maybe it's nostalgia, I don't know, but it makes me feel relaxed. One of the best songs fro one of my favorite soundtracks.

Kingdom Hearts is a favorite. Sanctuary, in particular, is almost too beatiful for words. So I'll stop talking and let you listen to it.
Also, I'll always remember approaching hyrule castle while listening to this (even if does seem a little synthetic now:

Not a well known one, but Lucidity. Crappy gameplay, but MY GAWD the music.

The track "Go Boldy" is a particular favorite, but cannot be found on youtube.

With its melancholy jazz and strong crescendos, Halo 3: ODST's is an amazingly composed, atmospheric and thoroughly satisfying score; without a doubt, it's Martin O'Donnell's best to date.

A definite close second for me.

That's easy, the Ace Combat series.
Some of these aren't the specific ones I want, but it's too early/late for me to care, so I basically randomly chose a few.

For me it's probably the following ones -

Bastion
Braid
Halo 2 (I love the Arbiter's theme.)
Myst III
Red Dead Redemption
Transistor
Defiance (The game is so-so, but the soundtrack is really big and bombastic stuff.)

I'd also include stuff like "The Travellers" from the White Knight Chronicles soundtrack, "Liberi Fatali" and "Premonition"from FF VIII but then we're getting into the realms of single tracks. Those soundtracks above are probably the ones I go back to listen to most often.

It's a good day when I'm reminded of 'Baba Yetu'. Think I'll go listen to that again.

Other than that, I love a lot of music in games. Mario and Halo are the obvious classics, but I'm also a huge fan of the Mass Effect, Skyrim, Persona 3 &4 and Metal Gear soundtracks. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in particular had epic boss battle music.

In regards to whole soundtracks, I have to give it to Headhunter. I've always loved Richard Jacques' stuff (yes, even Sonic R) but Headhunter is easily one of his best works. There are some tracks that are fantastic in their own right (my favourites are Jack's theme and Ramirez at Bay), but I feel it works at its best when you listen to the whole thing at once (or play through the game), so you can hear the different leitmotifs as they are woven together very well.

On the other hand, I don't really have a favourite individual track since there are too many that I just adore. Generally when I pick favourites I go first and foremost by composer. On the top of my head (by no means does this mean I like them more than ones I would think of later) some of my favourite composers are:

Richard Jacques
Jun Ishikawa
Tim Follin
Grant Kirkhope
Yousuke Yasui
Jake Kaufman

Holy shit I just realised I could probably just go on and on as more come into my head so I'm going to stop there...

I've always been a great fan of the Rayman 2 soundtrack for it's unique vibe. There's just not a lot like it, even in the Rayman series, and I always give bonus kudos to a soundtrack with a good leitmotif that manages to be sneak its way into the majority of songs.

That track never gets old. Good thing it's on the main menu screens.

I've been thinking about Rayman recently, and listening to this old track.

I'm talking about the first one. I wish it was longer, because it always puts a "
" on my face.

Xenoblade is my favourite game and favourite soundtrack, swiftly followed by Tales of Symphonia. The DKC series takes third place.

I love most of Motoi Sakuraba's work too, Baten Kaitos and Star Ocean 3 being two of his best.

Individual songs I love, well, there's far too many to remember off the top of my head, but a few of the best:

Bowser levels & Jolly Roger Bay (Mario 64)
Zelda's Lullaby
Birdman (Pilotwings 64)
Zanarkand
Zeal (Chrono Trigger)

Shout-outs to: La Pucelle Tactics, FF Crystal Chronicles (and Crystal Bearers), Fragile Dreams, Little King's Story, Kingdom Hearts series, and Yoshi's Island.

Rareware were music wizards at one point. Recently playing the first Perfect Dark has opened my ears to their variety, ambience and general melodies with restricted soundware.

Ocarina of time also really made mystical beauty and wonder with its soundtrack. Awed me that games could be that way, when a kid.

Sonic adventure 1 & 2 had grreat main metal tracks. Pity none of the later could say the same.

Is it cheating to say Brutal Legend? ;)

It's a close call, I can't deny that. There's a debate to be made either way.

Personally, though, I have to give a slight edge to P4, simply because I'll Face Myself is probably the best boss theme I've ever heard. It NEVER gets old for me. Ever.

The Shin Mitsuo Tensei edit is brilliant, too.

Overall, Bastion...

I am still not sure if its the best soundtrack, or I am still awestruck because there is nothing like it in other games but, then again, there is NOTHING like it in other games:

Oh shit this is a hard one; even Halo (a game I'm indifferent to) had an excellent score.

Overall though, my two choices are probably Mass Effect (whole series) and Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Main Theme - Sam Hulick and Jack Wall

Suicide Mission (ME2) - Jack Wall, Sam Hulick, David Kates & Jimmy Hinson

Icarus - Michael McCann

Opening Credits - Michael McCann

These are four (two from each) of what I would consider the best pieces of music from each series - not my favourites; but the honest best.

Got quite a few favourites already listed here, but it'd feel wrong not to add a few of my favourites to this thread yet to be mentioned.

Kingdom Under Fire (The Crusaders and Heroes)
Fable (Original and the Lost Chapters)

Dynasty Warriors (not quite the same as others, but that rocking soundtrack is always great to listen to)

Nier

To list a few, probably overlooking some favourites, and have some like FFX previously stated in here. Not my favourite songs in each case, but great ones nonetheless.

Final Fantasy VI in the SNES (FFIII in USA). For nostalgic reasons. It had a credits sequence at the start of the game that was so well done that it even put into shame most of the ending sequences at the time (I actually mistook it with the ending credits when I saw it at the store).

And it didn't stop there. Most of the music is great. The boss battle music, and specially the last boss battle (Dancing Mad) were a delight.

But the best part of its music is that each of the 14 characters had his/her own theme song (well, Sabin and Edgar share the same one), and the game ending (this time the actual ending) had an excellent medley of all the themes, showcasing each character in a escape sequence.

30 minutes of nostalgia later...

*sigh* Err... what was I saying? Oh, yeah! It took a lot of time to reach that part. But it was worth it!
