If you're looking for an insanely gonzo novel, go with Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis. Seriously. It affects the way I look at people in the streets.
Yes!
-?Children are like puppies. They shit on the floor, piss where they like, make a terrible noise when you kick them, can?t be taught anything without threats and an electric cattle prod, suck all your money away on luxuries like food, eat crap I can?t stomach, and eventually grow up to be even more fucking annoying than they were when they couldn?t walk and puked on your face when you had to pick ?em up by the scruff of the neck to get them out from underfoot.
-Spider Jerusalem: More famous than Jesus, better dressed than Santa Claus, wouldn?t be seen dead on a cross and has never been caught up a chimney. So I deserve your money more.?
Look up Spider Jerusalem if you just got lost.

Like most of the above, I have to go with:

V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Killing Joke, Transmetropolitan A Fine Thing, Sandman Preludes, Hellblazer Bloodlines.

& also

Halo Jones 1-3 (where are 4-9 you moody bastard?!)
The Judge Child Quest, & of course

THE BOYS.

Edit: Ack! Forgot Cerebus the Aardvark, probably the Oscar Wilde referenced one (forget which number).

Maus by Art Spiegelman.
This series is killing me. I was lucky enough to find a copy of the first in a local library. Read "My father bleeds history" and loved it, unfortunately, I went back to the library to find that someone had stolen the second book. I have traveled as far as I could looking for the second book and have yet to find it. It's killing me I tell you!

As a kid it was (and still sort of is) Tintin, but lately it's been all about XIII.

And if you haven't read Cat Shit One you're missing out on the most awesome graphic novel ever made ;) though Americans will know it as Apocalypse Meow. Just imagine this in comic form: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr4QBZfjtqs&feature=related

It's a split decision between, Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and The Complete Johnny The Homicidal Maniac by Jhonen Vasquez

V for Vendetta, Watchmen, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Sandman, Sin City, Preacher and the Frank Miller Batman's.
Damn, I was wondering how far down the list Preacher would end up. Preacher is definitely my favorite.

I haven't really read enough graphic novels to effectively stratify them into 'like' and 'dislike', the ones I have read I've enjoyed so far them being:

Watchmen
Albedo

I think I'm probably going to pickup and read Top 10 soon, it looks intriguing.

Watchmen is so great,
I was pulled in by it,
I read it at an enthiusastic rate.
No one would dare say it's shit,
for if they did do such a thing,
i would hurt them a big bit.

Well, I mean Watchmen, natch, is an real (albeit obvious) favorite.

Followed close behind are (mostly) Superman centric stories:

Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross

Superman: Birthright also by Mark Waid with incredible pencils by Leinel Francis Yu

and finally Superman: Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek. Good story driven on the premise of Superman in a world were Superman is a comic book hero.

I've just started reading The Sandman, which is awesome, but one of my favourites is an ongoing novel by Garth Ennis called 'The Boys'; it's about a boosted CIA team whose job is to monitor groups of superhero vigilantes and make sure they don't get out of line. Very gory, very violent, very dark. I love it.
