George Smiley from the John le Carre novels, or James Bond from the books. Probably Bond moreso.

I can't tell...is your avatar a Predator? It looks waaaaaaay too zoomed in to be able to tell.

I say Jack Bauer from 24 as my first choice. Very tortured soul, scarily competent character who will stop at *nothing* to save the day.

And, while I have yet to play Assassin's Creed II, Ezio Auditore de Firenze. Could almost be seen as a 1500s era Batman (roughly same backstory, same affinity for a multitude of fantastic weapons and gadgets), but he doesn't descend into the gloomy lifestyle that Batsy did. Makes him much more enjoyable.

I think I'll say:
Book: Toss up between Harry Dresden and Althalus. Believable, but good people.
Movie: Luke Skywalker or Han Solo (very geeky, but classics)
Game: The Prince from Prince of Persia series, or Hector from Castlevania: Curse of Darkness

I'm going to have to go with Superman.

People say that the don't like him because he's overpowered. He really isnt..DC Wikia The flash(Wally West) and read his power list, Then check out The Spectre.

He also has an interesting backstory, and not just "Involved in accident, gained powers".

Gutz from Berserk. To sum up what sort of hero he is. You have to know what Bryonic hero is. Anyway he has literally had every bad thing possible happen to him and even though it may of made him a psychopath with emotional issue steming from his childhood he has pulled through and continues to improve who he is and get stronger so that he can finally beet them man who betrayed him and his friends to become a god by sacrificing them all. This man literally defies death on a nightly basis.

I like Goku because he can beat up anyone that wants to destroy the Earth and he's also a family man. He's a pretty cool dude, I wish I could be like him.
This is my choice as well. I admire Goku because as powerful as he became he never let that change who he was. He never had any delusions of grandeur or any such nonsense. For all his immense power, his needs and desires always remained few. A truly uncorruptable hero. I truly wish I could be like him.

Mm, read Speak about five years ago, Melinda Sordino has been my favorite protagonist: Relatable, Snarky and Three dimensional- All make for an excellent character.
Oh, and aside from her? Kitty Pryde. Later on, when she stopped being an olden days comic book female and started being a somewhat recent times one, IE when she gained the ability to be a productive team member.

Yea exactly! Like, Goku just wants to hang out with his family and train with his son all day, more than any amount of money or power. That's why he's awesome, I wish there were more honest, true hearted heroes like him in more stories.

Enoch Wallace from Clifford D. Simak's Way Station.
Not the most significant hero, but I like him.

Also, Naija from Aquaria.

Aaand, Amamiya Yuuhi from The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer

Everyone's favorite hero, Erevis Cale.

Well, except that guy who told Paul Kemp "Apart from my complete and utter hatred of the main character, great work."

This is kind of hard since I usually prefer villains... (I might even make an opposition thread for the bad guys!)

As for hero, I'd probably have to say Jesse Custer from Preacher or Spider Jerusalem from Transmetropolitan.

(Jesse isn't the best character in Preacher, that award sits firmly with Cassidy, but you could hardly call him a "hero").

You obviously haven't played the original Starcraft then.
It isn't "zoomed in", its the in-game unit portrait for the protoss hero Tassadar.

Link, from the Zelda series. Even though he doesn't speak he still portrays courage and an undying will to fight the good fight. I always connected with Link more than any other game character I can think of. I grew up with him, and will always respect him.
Well said my friend, i knew that i would defidently get ninja's with Link before i even clicked on this thread.

First and foremost is the character that I created for my book-- he's bitter, jaded, and disenchanted with humanity, but somehow manages to find a friend. And he strangles a man to death with his own spine.

Then, in descending order from favorite to least favorite:

Garrus. Just...Garrus.
God of War 3-era Kratos, just because his disregard for anything with a heartbeat is thigh-slappingly hilarious.
Artyom from Metro 2033, becuase of his kickass voice and the monologue he makes at the (good) end of the game.
Louis from Left 4 Dead, 'cause he's RELOADING!!!1! and GRABBIN' PEELZ!
Eragon, from the book Eragon-- he's only slightly les horrible than Chris-chan, but Paolini keeps on painting him as a hero and role model. That's just too funny.
