For Star Wars Battlefront, there's one essential mod.
The Elite's Mod 2.0. It changes all the units to way more awesome and makes the AI stupider to compensate for the overkill weapons.
The Assault droid becomes IG-88, gives the Jet Trooper Infinite jet, and various other perks making the game way more amusing to play.

Dawn of War Pro, for Dawn of War, natch. Radically alters the way the game plays, allows for much larger battles, and stops the game just being a tech rush to high tiers and relic units.

BGTrilogy, for Baldur's Gate I & II, loads all the Baldur's Gate game content into the BG2 engine, so you can play from the start with kit classes and slightly improved graphics. (I also have a mod that lets me play it in 1440x900, which is ace as well)

Synergy is my favorite.
I mean, half life is awesome. Half life with about 30 air boats is freaking insane =]

The one I've enjoyed the most so far was, surprisingly, Half-Quake: Amen for HL1. The bizarre dark humor, the enjoyable music and the "a-ha!" moments that the difficult gameplay brought about make me go back and play it once in a while, just for laughs.

The ones I'm looking forward to the most are Black Mesa for HL2 and Recall to Hell for Doom3.

i have never used a mod. Im too scared they will somehow break my game.
Try out some Half-Life or Half-Life 2 mods. Those install very easily, and not just make the game better, but give you a completely different game.

Eternal Silence - mmm...

Minerva - HL2

I played so much http://www.truecombatelite.net/ TrueCombat: Elite back in the days...

Where do mods stop and game-enhancers begin?
X-Wing Alliance Upgrade Project is one of the best examples of a good game made very shiny and nice.

The first that comes to mind is Desert Combat for Battlefield 1942, Absolutely great modification, almost better than (and in some ways was better than) Battlefield 2. So many great new vehicles, new weapons, and things like the AC-130 gunship were just loads of fun when with a good team.

Forgotten Hope, again for Battlefield 1942, is the second. It takes the more comic-book like Battlefield, injects some more realistic elements, throws in an almost absurd amount of vehicles (literally almost every tank that served appears in that game). It was almost like a whole new game, really, the WWII setting improved in almost every way. It was just a lot of fun. Forgotten Hope 2 was recently released for Battlefield 2, but I have not yet played it (I forgot all about it, actually, until I was writing this up).

The Specialists for Half-Life
Desert Crisis (RIP) for Half-Life
They Hunger for Half-Life
Desert Combat for Battlefield 1942
Smod for Half-Life 2

But the best mod ever is...

HALF-LIFE 2 JAYKIN' BACON SOURCE for Half-Life
Too bad no one runs servers for such a great mod. It's basically a bunch of random weapons, like a minigun, sniper rifle, sawed off, chainsaw, and a scoped knife. Did I mention this is a humor mod? After killing some one, you can taunt such witty remarks as, "WELCOME TO MURDER CITY. I'M THE MAYOR!" Or "BIG MONEY, BIG PRIZES! I LIKE IT!" Or, my personal favorite, "BUTTSAUCE!"
Seriously, get some friends who own Half-Life, download the mod, and get someone to set up a server. This mod is crazy fun.

Garry's Mod For Half Life 2.

Though I haven't tried the Black Mesa mod (It isn't out yet, is it?), I think it's gonna kick some serious ass.

I had about ten million mods for Morrowind by the end, and while I've modded many other games, that was the first one I got so deep in to, and therefore is the one that always stands out.

I think Vibrant Morrowind was the first to really make my jaw drop, but really it's hard to pick just one.... or ten.

I agree with you wholeheartedly tiredinnuendo, Morrowind is a great game with a Construction Set, so that means some of the Mods can be phenomenal. Although my personel favourite has to be Vampiric Embrace, that thing is like cocaine to me. Adding a better Vampire element to an Elder Scrolls game was like adding Chocolate to Milk, it was bound to be done but you still relished the moment. I also took a sick humour in conquoring enemies and putting them into Skimpy Outfits from Slof's Goth Shop, even though I am as straight as a...straight thing. The one thing that angered me about it was the fact that my Victims and Vampire Children didn't seem to react much to the presence of their master, they just said "Don't hurt me!" every single time. I want to see them get excited about me talking to them, or to run away, or SOMETHING. But meh well, that's just me. God, I type way too much.
