Maybe i should check out the stage version then cause i HATED Sweeny Todd on film?

But otherwise those are good choices
You really should. You should check out the stage version with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn from 1982. They are from the original version and it works a LOT better. There are numerous things that I don't think work out very well in the film due to how it was adapted. And Johnny Depp just doesn't work Sweeney's rage. I won't go on about it. But I'll say, you should check out the 1982 stage version before you write it off. If you still don't like it, fair enough. But don't judge it on that film version.

Musical: The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, a great cautionary tale on the dangers of nationalism.

Theatre: I'm a sucker for Richard III, but I also loved Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are Dead.

Actually, "Springtime for Hitler" is better. LOL

I'll have to go with good old "Phantom of the Opera" (yes, it's a musical, not an opera, cuz that'd redundant, or meta, or ironic, or too mainstream, or some other hipster epithet).

EDIT: Since this is also about theater, "Copenhagen" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copenhagen_%28play%29] is awesome.

After seeing a production of it that included one of my (recently graduated) theatre friends, I've fallen in love with Chess: The Musical. It tells the story of two championship chess players during the Cold War panic period, one from America and one from Russia, as the final game approaches and the love triangle they're involved in forms. It's a very good show, although the second act is a little bit slow.

Also, I have a soft spot for Bye Bye Birdie, after my high school did it a couple of years ago. That Shriners scene...

This and Wicked (admittedly, I don't see many theatre productions). But wow, I mean sure, I had a Wicked bias before I saw it but it was freaking amazing (and don't any of you people who've seen all those other musicals dare get elitist on me, or I'll cry pathetically in a corner. Just try it *points threateningly*).

Every outing to the theatre I've thoroughly enjoyed. Rent, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, all brilliant.
But i have to say that as H.G. Wells' War Of The Worlds is my favorite book, Jeff Waynes WotW was my highlight. Just seeing that massive Martian tripod on screen sent shivers down my spine.

My mom is a major in musical theater, so I get to see a lot of these things...and I'd have to say my favorite is...the South Park movie.

What? It counts!

In terms of real, honest-to-god musicals, my favorites would be the three that I saw on Broadway: Sweeney Todd, Phantom, and Spamalot. I saw Wicked when it was on tour, and it was also indeed awesome.

I'm also surprised that no one has mentioned Little Shop of Horrors yet.

There's also a lot of stuff I've heard the soundtrack to but sadly haven't got the chance to see, like Spring Awakening. Great soundtrack but I haven't seen it so I can't judge.

For Musicals I'd have to say Dr. Horrible's Sing A Long Blog

My favorite play is definitely The Death of A Salesman.

My favorite musical still has to be Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Its quite possible the best rock musical of the last 20 years and completely amazing to watch. I saw it at a show in Cleveland a number of years back and was completely taken back by its intensity.

The story centers around the character of Hedwig, a transsexual from East Germany with rock star dreams and follows the story of his experience intertwined with that of Tommy Gnosis a popular rock star that stole Hedwig's songs, dreams, and love. Its a great story and the music is innovative and amazing.

There is also a movie version that is pretty good and probably easier to get a copy of it than the musical itself outside of an album of the songs.

If I really had to choose, I'd probably say Sondheim's Assassins. It's beautifully constructed, and has hauntingly dark themes that give me the tingles. At the same time, it can also be hilarious at times.

I also recently read (but have not seen) a play by Ibsen, Hedda Gabler, which was fantastic. I'd love to see it on stage.

And how can I forget Gilbert and Sullivan? I love the vast majority of their work. Still, if I had to choose, I'd pick Assassins.
