I actually like Namco's Tales series more than any Square RPG I've played so far.

Cave Story has RPG eliments. And it's free and Japanese. Yeah, it's not really a JRPG. Still my favorite Japanese game though, it sorta has something to do with the topic.

Lost Odyssey. Pretty easy choice for me, seeing as the other non-Square JRPGs I played flat out sucked. I haven't played Persona though, so don't send me angry messages thinking I just said Persona sucked.

I dunno the original Star Ocean, it was by Enix before it got bought up by Squaresoft...

Square didn't buy out Enix, it was a merge which was started by Enix. And Star Ocean was made by Tri-Ace and published by Enix.

My favourite non-Square JRPG would have to be Shadow Hearts II aka. Shadow Hearts: Covenant. It's one of the few games to emotionally impact me as much as Final Fantasy X had and for me the Shadow Hearts series rivals Final Fantasy, but is surpassed by FF only in length. It combines a dark and emotional story (well not so much the 3rd one) with a form of wit and humor that I've yet to see in any other game, or other form of media.
