are we talking internet obscure or general population obscure?

my respective answers depending are Peter Jackson's "Braindead"/"Dead Alive"

and for general population obscure (at least as far as I understand) "Battle Royale"

honorable mentions go to Mortal Kombat (the 1st movie) think of that what you will but it came out when I was 4 and I watched it a few times when I was little so I probably have that nostalgic filter

and also to "The Machine Girl" from the maker of Battle Royale, not anywhere near as thought-provoking but more bat-sh*t insane and a lot of fun
All of those movies are awesome, I like Mortal Kombat the least out of the movies listed but it was definitely good for something based off a fighting game. I loved every second of The Machine Girl, the kind of gore and dark comedy it had just gelled so perfectly IMO, I was laughing my ass off most of the movie. I usually don't go for those overly gore-y movies as I hated Tokyo Gore Police.

One of the most obscure movies I can think of would be Survive Style 5+. To me, it's the exact type of movie that only Japan could make. It really has some great WTF-ness (Vinnie Jones is running around Japan yelling "what is your function?" at people) to it that really does somehow work to where it's just not weird for weird's sake like Funky Forest, which is just utterly boring because it's just trying to be weird and nothing else.

Black Dynamite.

I think it's obscure, nobody I know has seen it apart from my Dad, who I watched it with, and it's fucking hilarious if you understand what it's trying to do.

Jesus, none of these suggestions are even remotely obscure.

Try "Dark Star" on for size. http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi2879389977/

John Carpenter made this little Low Budget Sci Fi Gem with the help of some of the Special effects people from Star Wars.

I'm a huge huge David Lynch fan.

If you've got a tolerance for movies that don't make immediate sense, go pick up a copy of

Eraserhead

Blue Velvet

Mullholland Dr.

Inland Empire
i can understand why some people would respect lynch's work, but i find it to be unnecessarily unsettling. i did however found eraserhead to be the most impressive one of his list of films.

i recently watched la chinoise (the chinese) by jean-luc godard. That's a pretty good film for anyone interested in marxist thought or french new wave cinema in general.

another noteworthy film i watched recently is a film titled haxan by benjamin christensen. at first glance, the film seems to deal with the history of witchcraft, but towards the end the director does a pretty good job at relating this concept to violence committed upon women and the mentally ill during the medieval witch hunts in europe, and the progression of human rights since then.

lastly, one director worth checking out is ingmar bergman. some (if not all) of his most notable work usually employs the portrayal of human relationships and interactions as a manner to delve into the conceptions of modern morality. some of his most popular works include the seventh seal, sawdust and tinsel, and wild strawberries. my personal favorite is scenes from a marriage.

How the fuck could you ENJOY that movie other than to laugh at it? That was the single most terrible piece of film I have ever had the misfortune of having been forced to watch.

OT: Does Run Lola Run count as obscure?

I'm going to go for the Princess Bride. I am the only person in my generation who I know has seen it.

An 80's vampire movie called Vamp staring Robert Rusler and Grace Jones about a group of collage guys who go to a strip joint only to find it's run by vampires. Awesome movie indeed.

Requiem For a Dream.
Though maybe not so obscure now, when it first came out if got very little attention due to the cursed NC-17 rating it was given stateside. Still I know a lot of people who don't know it. Really chilling effective film. Makes me feel ill every time I watch it which is exactly what it is aiming for.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley- a tight-as-balls story about the Irish civil war
Moon- a guy lives on the moon and learns the horrifying secret about why he's there
Chaos Theory- Ryan Reynolds' life is destroyed so he decides to let chance dictate his every action
Sunshine- a team of scientists fly a spaceship to the sun to jump-start it with a bomb the size of Manhattan

The Box. Probably one of the strangest films I ever happened upon with my family while flipping through channels. The plotline was amazing, but unfortunately not many people get it :/

Pretty well know as the origins of Alien, as Dan O'Bannon wanted the alien in Dark Star to be scary, but it turned out goofy. So he had another go.

Never Back Down.

Its a good martial arts movie. and the best remake of Karate Kid without taking the karate kid name. I actually wouldn't have made teh connection between the two if I hadn't seen a review for jaden smiths Karate Kid that mentioned it.
I was beginning to think I was the only person who genuinely enjoyed that movie. That would definitely be mine.

Other than that, Rounders, starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton (my fanboyish love of Norton is no secret 'round these parts) is a damn good underrated movie. While I'm on the subject, Norton's 25th Hour is excellent. Great performance out of Norton (I expected a 3rd Oscar nod), and a wonderful supporting cast (Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Anna Paquin stand out). Definitely one to watch.

I'm a big fan of Troma movies. For those that don't know, Troma makes intentionally bad movies, revelling in it's horrible acting and retarted plot. Watching one of their films is like watching a B-movie on steroids. The Toxic Avenger is their biggest hit, about a nerd turned mutant superhero. I can also recommend Troma & Juliet, which is a hilarious ultra-violent and nudity filled take on the Shakespeare classic.

How obscure does a movie have to be for it to count? I was going to say Tetsuo: the Iron Man, but I figure it's probably not nearly obscure enough. I'm gonna go with Hellraiser V: Inferno. Hellraiser is a pretty well-known franchise, but how many of you have seen all the movies?

Inferno is the best one.

Cube...is the name of a favorite semi-obscure film of this particular Escapist looking to avoid mod wrath for a low content post.
