I don't know that I could nail it down to a single favorite... I think the "most playthroughs" award would go to Chrono Trigger, but I actually thought Final Fantasy 6 was a deeper RPG in that generation... speaking of deep RPGs on 16-bit consoles, Phantasy Star 4 completely blew my mind when I played it for the first time. Moving away from consoles, Baldur's Gate 1&2 and Icewind Dale 1&2 took D&D and put it into a single-player experience with all of the number crunching done for me... Fallout 1&2 redefined how I look at post-apocalyptic fiction and got me into all sorts of things I dismissed as crap before... and Knights of the Old Republic 1&2 resurrected Star Wars for me after the dismal disappointment of Episode 1.

so... Favorite? Umm... all of those and more.

All the way backwards: Baldur's Gate 2.

It was one of my first RPGs (except for BG1, of course..), and it has held up. One of the most fascinating and rich games ever made. I have to admit I get somewhat nostalgic just from hearing the theme music, so there's that as well.

The generation before this one: Persona 4

First it took everything that annoyed me about 3 and fixed it, then it took a few things that didn't annoy me about 3 and made them infinitely better. Then it blew my goddamned mind.

But the JRPG formula has certainly become stale for Western audiences. Mass Effect and the Elder Scrolls are way more compelling to me these days than anything that Square-Enix releases in the genre.
Well, there's your problem.
Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that all modern JRPGs are shite. Square-Enix desperately needs to do something different with the FF franchise. Or stop mining that franchise to death and make a new Chrono game. Squenix did make Just Cause 2, though, and that game is pretty sweet. Atlus is probably the best Eastern RPG house out there right now. I've always wanted to play Persona 4. I guess I sold my PS2 a bit early. Does the PS3 play that one? I wish I didn't have to check a goddamn website to know.

Fallout and Fallout 2.

Any other answer is wrong
I did love Fallout, but I only played through it recently. Thanks GoG.com!

KotOR is also on my docket. I picked it up on Steam before Christmas.

If it counts Dungeon master on the Atari ST. Back-story in a small boklet, 'novella' and a reason why you control this group of misfits through a dungeon. Doing a run-through using just Wuuf the Bika.

If it doesn't then maybe pools of radiance on the commodore 64. Playing D&D without a DM! OMG you see what our computer overlords are capable of! Imagine how good they will be in the future!

Legend of Mana, for the PS1.

But Oblivion is getting old enough to call "last-gen", I believe.

I was actually just thinking this myself, except that it was released on the X360. I remember picking up my copy for PC and there was a guy who had bought copies for PC and X360, "just to compare." >.<

Also, there's still a thriving mod community. Have you seen that full conversion mod, Nehrim? That looks pretty amazing. Haven't played it yet, though.

Fable. A thousand times Fable. That game was great, maybe it's somewhat distorted due to the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia but that game was awesome and I sunk so many hours into even after I'd finished everything in it. The quirky, fantastical world of Albion is painted so lovingly and endearingly that you can't help but fall in love with it. The humour of the game also contributes hugely to the overall package of the game, and I think it's the only game to make me laugh sincerely. Like I said, my perception may be blurred due to the lack of recency, but the amount of fond memories I have of this game must amount to something.

As an interesting aside, I've been playing Final Fantasy X recently, and it was completely not what I was expecting. Thanks to the laughing scene and the general mixed reactions to it, I was expecting an interesting but lightweight game. Instead, what I've got is one of the most interesting discussions of religion I think I've ever seen in a game. It's moody, dark, occasionally hilarious, often poignant, and I'm loving it. I know saying this is on these forums is like inviting a flamefest, but I honestly think the dialogue I've seen so far in Final Fantasy X is as good as any Bioware game. Maybe the voice acting is a little spottier, but Wakka, Lulu and co have just as many issues and inner-demons as Carth and Bastila, and talk just as much about psychedelic philosophical concepts as they do about their past tragedies. I'm really enjoying it, and am looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.
Auron is one of my favorite characters in a video game ever. Honestly, that game just needed better voice acting, particularly in the role of Tidus. Enjoy the third act of that game. I know I did. It's an existential trip.

I don't play my PC copy much. It's old enough that any non-gaming PC can run it decently at this point, but after 5 years with a controller and 4,000 mod-less hours, I'm done. DONE. Most of the Oblivion mods I've found are shit I don't want. I like the enemy scaling and combat just fine as is!

Quest mods are cool, though.

In 8 years, I could count the number of people who claimed they saw it coming on one hand.

Awwww man! Use the spoiler marks! I just stated in this very thread that I haven't played the damn game yet. There is no statute of limitations on spoilers. Angry dude is angry.

Nehrim is a complete conversion. New world. New quests. New characters. It's essentially a whole new game laid on top of Oblivion. There've been good things said across the gaming journo industry regarding the high quality and attention to detail.

I'm well aware of Nehrim. It's also 50 hours long, and is basically a different game. A game I don't like.
