Well, technically I guess my favorite RPG game would be Pokemon Blue, 'cos I've been playing the same fucking game for the past 13 years! And I don't know why! I gotta catch 'em all!

But in all seriousness, my favorite RPG would be Tales of Symphonia. My only JRPG experience before this one was Final Fantasy X. Not a good start. But ToS fixed that for me. Great story, fantastic voice acting (though some of the dialogue was a bit iffy at times), and gameplay that I really enjoyed.

Golden Sun. The two for the GBA are my all-time favourite RPGs (with FFX being a close second (third?) with Monster Hunter Tri shortly behind it (though I'm not sure how RPG-ish MH3 is, and it is on the wii, hardly a 'last gen' console, so I'll put Fable TLC as my third/fourth favourite RPG)).

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn remains my favourite rpg bar none. Enthrawling story, sympathetic characters, memorable villain, massive open world, countless ways to play the game, solid tactical gameplay, well established setting, AMAZING soundtrack, beautiful 2D artwork.

Games got it all. There are games which do one or two aspects better but none that succeed at everything so well!

Dragon force on the saturn

Front mission 3 and Grandia on the playstation

all great RPG's and for the most part quite under-rated and unknown.
Front Mission 3 popped into my head as soon as I read the thread title. Always good to see it get some love.

Dark Cloud and Dark Chronicle! Enjoyable dungeon-crawling madness. I've played both of them to death.

Pokemon Red/Blue. Best in the series in my opinion, but since buying those first carts when I was at college, I've been a pokefan ever since >.<

Deus Ex, just totally overwhelmed me with its greatness. Not so keen on the second, but the original blew my mind and left me with an unforgettable experience.

Arcanum Steamworks of Magic Obscura: Drew me in, along with Diablo 2. Spent many evenings with LAN laptops and the boy beating dungeons upon dungeons of hideous creatures and getting pissed at Deckard Cain for being useless and annoying.

Final Fantasy Tactics, because I'm a sucker for isometric games.

Oh gods, I nearly forgot, Baldur's Gate 2. Jeez!

Morrowind. Because. Wow.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Lol @ Rasputin! The ring system makes battling a whole lot more engaging, the characters were wonderful, the story was great, the soundtrack was inspiring... I could sing praise about SH all night.

Golden Sun and Breath of Fire 4 get honourable mentions, as does Final Fantasy 6 through to 9 and the first Jade Cocoon.

I feel old :-(

SNES- Chrono Trigger cause it was awesome.
Secrets of Mana cause it was awesome.
And that Sailor Moon rpg, because still freaking awesome.

PS1 -FF8, FF9. Same reasons as above.

PS2- FF10 and FFX-2 and FF12, also very much enjoyed with my husband Baulder's Gate 1&2 and Dark Cloud. Again all awesome fun and new worlds that were worth exploring. And as topic starter stated I also name all main chars after myself or my husband, and support/party members are usually my siblings names.

EDIT Holyshit I forgot KotOR 1 and 2 and also Fable and Jade Empire.....drools...

And also I think sadly that I have completed the majority of these games so many times we are into the double digits for replaying...holy fuck salt that alot of hours of my life.

All of my favorite RPGs are from past generations. Not only that, but my three favorite games are all past-gen RPGs.

-Tales of Symphonia
-Golden Sun
-Golden Sun: The Lost Age

As for why:

-Tales of Symphonia: First and only game to make me cry
-Golden Sun: Great childhood memories playing it, and it's awesome.
-Golden Sun: The Lost Age: Same

Tales Of Symphonia on the Gamecube because it was really well done and the length of it for a gamecube game was amazing, and the plot was just as amazing, emotion everything was just so great in it

Final Fantasy 7

My introduction into the world of RPG's

Mainly because since I grew up around the ps1 console, I didn't appreaciate the older gems like "Planescape Torment", until I was older.

Morrowind is probably a better game, but I'm going to say Super Mario RPG for the sheer unapologetic quantity of goofy fun it provided from start to finish.
