Well, either me(Commonly referred to by the philosopher kids at school as Crazzee Abnormal) or my best friend(Ghost Abnormal).
We have some of the greatest philosophical conversations ever, the most notable ones happen over a nice game of Rock Band.

plato, rand and lao tzu... because i understand their legacy. the original buddha is up there as well.
Rand, she isn't exactly that influential. She died only about 40 years ago, so she isn't legendary. I agree with Plato, because he practically made Western Philosophy. I haven't exactly read much of Eastern Philosophy, but I heard that Lao Tzu is pretty important.
well legacy doesn't mean they have to be legendary. it just means that their message was handed down from a previous generation.

i am also against the split of western versus eastern philosophy since they practically come from the same roots in thought (what jung called the collective unconsciousness).

as for tzu, his work in daoism is a brilliant doctrine that should definitely be read, if not followed. on many levels, these philosophers cross each other in thought, sometimes with the same statements, sometimes from a different perspective. i consider this a certain importance, and i wonder if they knew that others knew.

Their all lousy drunks anyway. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_WRFJwGsbY]

I suppose Plato would be my favourite though.

Ya definitely Rand is my favorite, her ideas have forever shed so much light on my life and objectivism is by far the closest philosophy to define my beliefs.

Lao Tzu's proverbs and writings never fail to make me judge the universe in a new and brilliantly abstract way.

Its kind of a stretch but Carl Sagan is pretty influential in my life, if you have read "The Varieties of Scientific Experience" or any of his more philosophical writings, you will surely know what im talking about.

I also would like to thank all you escapists for making me feel at home, being a fan of Ayn Rand and objectivism. I really dont know anyone else in the whole world that has shown an interest, and it makes me smile every time i see one of you defend or make reference to her :)

Edit: Oh ya and Jean-Paul Sarte! Existentialism and Objectivism are the two most influential philosophies for me.

Man I love heaps of them for many different things

Plato - For the story of the Cave
Socrates - For the Socratic method
Aristole - For the Law of Identity
Hegal - For the Master-slave dialectic
Kant - For the Categorical imperative
Mill ? For On Liberty

Least Favourite
Rand - Cultish, unoriginal and insipid. Writers shouldn't pretend to be philosophers.
Sartre - I don't really have a beef with his work, I just dislike all the preening hipsters he attracts.

Favourite
Rawls - For A Theory of Justice. It?s easily the basis for all good modern left wing political thought.

one of the points in objectivism was that you shouldn't care whether other's think differently about what you like or who you are. you're never not at home as long as you got yourself.

the question is of course, do you actually have yourself?

Laoooooooo Tzuuuuuuuu!!!!! In the Hizous!

Seriously though, Lao Tzu is one of the only philosophers whose ideas I actively use in my every day life. I wish I could hug "him" for being so awesome.

I don't really have a favourite, but I have a least favourite; Aristotle.
I find it incredibly hard to digest the true meaning of his words, as he (like a lot of philosophers) has a nasty habit of waffling on for a few paragraphs before finally getting to the point of what he is trying to say.

Karl Popper is my favourite I think. A scientific and political theorist that is still very much relevant to modern times.

I am nor sure who it was that said this but I realy like this saying "Is god willing to prevent evil, but not able? then he is not omnipotent. Is he able but not willing? then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? then why call him god."
I find that particular quote by Epicurus to be highly... questionable. Gulivers Travels touched upon it, and even a Futurama episode shot it down (Godfellas).

In fact he even answered it himself!
"If God listened to the prayers of men, all men would quickly have perished: for they are forever praying for evil against one another."

The original buddha, Heidigger, Jesus, Freud, and Jung.
The founder of Buddha was a man by the name of Prince Gautama Siddharta:-

"You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection."

I love Descartes:-

"Whenever anyone has offended me, I try to raise my soul so high that the offense cannot reach it."

Seeing as I'm Philosophical Taoist, Lao Tzu is my personal favorite philosopher, followed closely by Socrates.
