Kingdoms of Amalur's major selling point has been it's stellar combat, the reception of which has fluctuated from glowing to dismissive. So, in your opinion, what is the best combat in an RPG?

Mine would have to be Jedi Academy. Best Star Wars game ever. It's floaty, jumpy, runaroundy, lightningy, lightsaber swinging fun.

Tactical ... Temple of Elemental Evil and Jagged Alliance 2
I never thought of Jagged Alliance 2 as an RPG.

But I love Jagged Alliance 2, so JAGGED ALLIANCE 2 will be my choice as well.

I think Spirit Engine 2 combat is really underrated, actually. Great use of pause-and-play. For action RPG, probably Witcher 2 or one of the RPG shooters. I generally tend not to go for the really combat-heavy RPGs, though, so my list is somewhat skewed.

Well I will always have a soft spot for people lining up on two sides and taking turns whacking each other, but the mechanics of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are probably my favorite at the moment. I would like to see them in more games (grueling challenge optional).

Xenogears and its evolved forms in Valkyrie Profile and Endless Frontier.

Its a turned based system, but it also adds in a timing mechanic and a combo system that gets you engaged in the fights.

The timing needed to pull off some attacks requires more tactical training than just going balls deep with OP characters.

Legend of legaia . You basically imput different combinations of left , right , up or down , to create a move . Like up down up , would make Vahn kick the oponent , punch him then sumersault. The moves were not given to you in advace so you basically had to try different cmbinations on your own ( or look at a guide) except for a few hyper moves that you learned from books . You could also get monsters you could summon by defeating them in battle . Really fun battle system.

Mass Effect 2, because Vanguard [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imwwC15QU5A].
On the more tactical side of things...Icewind Dale is good. The story isn't as strong as its contemporaries, but the combat was great.

Temple of Elemental Evil

Best to date implementation of tactical DnD combat in a video game. It really is sublime, I'd have loved for more games built on that engine.

If you're looking for something more actiony then I guess Mount & Blade: Warband would count. I don't generally think of that game as an rpg but whatever it is, the combat is amazing and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

No contest for real-time action RPGs:

For turn-based, it's a toss up between these two titles (although their combat mechanics are arguably very similar):

I loved Fallout 3's and New Vegas's. When I needed to, I could free fire effectively or snipe where necessary. But when things got hairy, I pulled out the good old reliable V.A.T.S.

My only complaint about it was I aimed for the head way too much. Other than if it was a deathclaw.

honestly depends, i like alot of different rpg's combats.

personally though, i will always have a soft spot for turn based and the kotor/dragon age style of pause and put in commands, i don't care what you say about it, i enjoy it dammit! at least enough to warrant 40-50+ playthroughs...

however, mount and blade warband and jedi knight academy are fucking amazing attempts at free flowing combat, props to those two developers.

Demon's Souls/Dark Souls (for straight-up action combat)

The Witcher (interesting rhythm-based tactical system)
The Witcher 2 (more action than TW1, clearly took a cue from Demon's Souls but not that elaborate)

Final Fantasy XII (detailed gambit system/programmable AI)

The World Ends With You (double-screen, two-hand DS action)

Final Fantasy XIII-2 has really become my favorite battle system in recent years.
Tales of Eternia's battle system was also really fun.

Personal favorite combat system in RPG's are the Tales series in general (Really like the fighting game/RPG style) and Demon's/Dark Souls games.

Mount & Blade: Warband also has some stellar combat as well, loved using lances/spears in that game.

Star Wars D20. Takes forever to go through every option on paper (which is why the attitude of homebrew exists)... but it would translate extremely well into a video game format.

...the fact that the Knights of the Old Republic games don't use it (and they don't... they essentially use a simplified homebrew/hybrid D&D version of it... and don't even get me started on tOR's system. Ugh) makes me die a little inside. But I guess complexity with verisimilitude attached don't appeal to most people. More's the pity.

The Shin Megami Tensei series has always stood out in terms of turn-based-combat mainly because it's impossible to just to spam attack and win the battle through brute force. Nocturne in particular KICKED THE PLAYER'S MONKEY ASS if they didn't buff/debuff regularly
