I quite partial to a bit of Cossacks now and again. When I can find the damn game anyway.

I'm gonna have to say that I'm partial to the Red Alert flavor of your preference.

AoE II (Not the whole series) fun missions and an addictive map editor, I made some awesome levels on that thing with dialogue and all.

command and conquer (but only pre C&C 3)
agreed. EA started to mess with everything...but before it was all about "one vision, one purpose, FOR THE TECHNOLOGY OF PEACE!" go NOD! all the way

Total War series, hands down. There's just so much content there (managed by incredibly stupid, predictable AI, but I cheat all the time anyway, so *shrug*).

I just got American Conquest by the same devs, using the same engine. This underrated series is certainly the best 2-D RTS ever got.

...Because, you know, now that we have 3-D, there's no reason to make a really awesome 2-D RTS that even the worst newish computer could run spectacularly. Because that would be stupid.

that would have been my second choice. all of the missions are challenging but not absolutely ball-busting. if you have knowledge of history you can plan on things happening in a similar way.

Yep, still Starcraft. The closest contender is AoE2, and it's not even close. Everything else is horrible, especially if it's on a console or has a console port.

I currently own:

CnC (and all addons)
Tiberian Sun (+Xpack) - This is an early and lasting favourite
CnC3 (+Xpack) - this fails in comparison.
The Tiberian universe is one of the most immersive experiences I had as a child.

Red Alert (and all addons)
RA2 (+Xpack) - Also a firm favourite
RA3 (Sucked so badly I refused to buy the Xpack)
Red Alert was a nice break from reality, where common sense prevailed over hard fact. Go dolphins!

Emperor: Battle for Dune - doesn't get as much praise as it should
CnC: Generals (+Xpack) - Fantastic game

Shogun: TW - This got me into RTS, along with the CnCs
Medieval: TW (+Xpack)
M2: TW
Empire: TW - modern genius
Singlehandedly the series that denied me any form of sun tan.

Age of Empires (+RoR) - one of the first games I ever really played, though not through all the way.
Age of Empires 2 (+Conquerors) - Redefined the genre imo
Age of Empires 3 - let the series down a bit but not a bad game

Supreme Commander (+FA) - Seriously challenges the other games, but I've not the patience for it
Company of Heroes (+Xpacks) - One of the best games I've ever played, period.
Homeworld II - didn't get on with this, though I can see it's potential if I gave it a chance.

Warcraft: Orcs + Humans - I still vaguely remember this game...
Warcraft II
Warcraft 3 (+TFT) - fantastic game, if only for one of the ultimate multiplayer experiences
Starcraft (+BroodWar)
I'm pretty sure everyone in the world who has laid eyes on an RTS knows WC3. I only bought it about two years ago, mind.

Dawn of War (+Xpacks)
DoW II - only fun for the campaign, couldn't stand the multiplayer..

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines - These games are underrated and not well known enough.
Commandos 2 - I played this game about 30 times through
Commandos 3 - And this one killed number 2 for me.

Wall of text crits you for.. I like my RTS games, and I could write reviews and game tips for nearly all of these listed. Out of all of these though, it'd have to be Company of Heroes, Tiberian Sun and CnC: Generals.

I've edited this six times so far as I remember games.. :/

If the Total War series is counted, likely that since I not only own but have enjoyed each game of the series and look forward to more.

If it doesn't count, what with having pausable real-time battles and a turn-based map which is where most players will spend the majority of their time... then the 'Age of' series.

Age of Empires single-handedly got me into both rts and began my love of PC gaming, for that along I owe it a fair bit. Then Age of Empires 2... do I even need to say how good that game was? I really shouldn't have to, it's one of the best rts ever made. Age of Mythology was impressive as well and more or less introduced the whole 'god powers' thing that has become standard fare for most rts (Calling in air strikes, buffing units, summoning things, you know...).

Age of Empires 3 didn't quite live up to the legend of its predecessors, but it was one of the first rts to implement physics into the combat and it also was one of the first rts to prove that rts need not be the most ugly of the genres. That game looked amazing when it first came out, still looks pretty good in-fact.

I'll miss the Ages series. Damn Microsoft, why'd ya have to shut down Ensemble? Hold on... no... I'm not crying... just something in my eyes is all.

I need to be alone for a bit.
