For casual play, it's got to be Dawn of War. but if I want to settle into to something a bit more satisfying, it's Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance.

I can't claim to be especially good at either, though.

Homeworld without a doubt, although DoW is very impressive, I never really cared about the story the way I did with Homeworld.

Red Alert was the first RTS I ever played and it got me onto the series. Starcraft hands down, can't wait for the SC2. Warcraft III because of custom games online, and Red Alert 2 without Yuri Expansion.

The Total War series, Shogun being my most fondly remembered (Ninja assassination videos!),

Starcraft (loved that game, the sequel had better live up to the name),

Dawn of War and Company of Heroes. I mention both because they have very similar gameplay. I didn't think I would like the 'Strategic Points' idea in an RTS but DoW proved me wrong and CoH put the system in a setting I prefer, not being overly interested in the Warhammer universes,

and last but not least: Total Annihilation. I remember thinking when first building a Nuke it would be like a 'Red alert' nuke, you know, like kill some men whilst barely scratching most buildings. When I finally used it all I could say was 'Whoa'.

*Is a Gamer*

Warcraft 3 brought me into the genre, the map editor made it an amazing game.

But as for the best RTS games ever made? In my opinion, Bring on Cossacks and Rise of Nations.

RoN shows you that global stratergy is all important, somehow I enjoy carpet bombing cities ;D, and Cossacks is all field battles in the 18th centuary! Whats not to love?

Bring on the RoN fans!

Great Battles of WWII: Stalingrad is probably my most played RTS, that fact the scenarios are as historically accurate as possible makes in interesting to a history buff like me. Plus, each mission offers literally hours and hours of gameplay. My most recently completed mission in it took me 27 save games to finish.

Definitely the best game based on the Blitzkrieg engine in my opinion.

Well, honorable mention must go to StarCraft. While i haven't touched it in years, it's the game that brought me into the RTS genre. The current favorite is Dawn of War, it's held strong to it's position for the years since the original release, though i'm not overtly fond of Soulstorm so far.

Homeworld is really good but my vote goes to Starcraft. If Starcraft 2 is bad, then I will peel off my skin and eat my own hand.

Red alert 2, it was just so much fun with all the strange units and superweapons, like weather control devices and massive telsa coils.

I played Age of Empires 2 for almost a full decade, definately my favorite RTS of all time.

But I love RTS games in general, everything from C&C to Dawn of War.

Probably besides Age of Empires 2, my favorite RTS would be the Command & Conquer series, no matter how much C&C3's multiplayer sucked ass.

Populous: The Beginning, Age of Empires 2, Dawn of War...

They're all good. I like anything that has a good belnd of grand strategy and micromanaging. Nah, I just love to micromanage.

My favorite is Joint Task Force. The limited "peacekeeping" funding forces you to really evaluate your stategy.
Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Curruption is good, thought the space combat greatly outshines the land battles.
World in Conflict was...ok. Lots of explosions, but not much strategy.
I haven't played Company of Heros yet. It's next on my "must buy" list.

I like Dawn of war, Age of Empires 3, and Populus ITB. But after playing Supreme Commander everything else seems a little small. I am not saying Supreme Commander is the pinicle of RST game design and ballance. I am saying that Supreme Commander satisfies that God complex part of my brain that wants to make the sky rain explosives and hurl thousands of wiling minions to thier firey doom.

I love my games without unit caps, so that it actually seems like you are waging war, not playing a sport of some kind.

Ground Control 1 and 2
World War III - Black Gold
Star Craft
KKnD
Command and Conquer Tiberium Dawn
Red Alert 1
Dark Reign 1
Stronghold
Age Of Empires 1
Sudden Strike 1

and then maby, battlezone and urban assault as they are strategy/fps games

Starcraft, all the way. Age of Empires was good though, and SW:EaW was decent...I only played that for the space battles though, I didn't care much for the land combat.
