Well, good friends, I purchased a CD the other day put out by Streetlight Manifesto, one of my favorite bands nowadays. The album is called 99 Songs of Revolution, and it's a cover album. They do covers of such great punk bands as NOFX, Bad Religion, The Dead Milkmen, and Simon and Garfunkel. (Yes I know Simon and Garfunkel aren't really punk.)

This had me thinking, I've noticed that lately lots of bands have been doing cover albums, and for the most part, I like them. For example, Streetlight reintroduced me to one of my favorite songs from a few years back. The song is Punk Rock Girl by The Dead Milkmen. For comparison, here's the original:

And here's the cover:

I've been listening to the CD almost nonstop since I bought it, and I think this song in particular is catchy as heck.

So I turn it over to you, Escapists. Are there any songs that you like the cover version as much or more than the original?

I was actually planning to make a mix for a friend of mine with a bunch of covers that I like. Kind of funny.

I have a list of several of my favorite covers, done by a TON of different artists. (listed for simplicity's sake with the original artist first, then the cover band)

Guitar Man - Bread - Cake
Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen - Rufus Wainwright
Hard Day's Night - The Beatles - SugarCult
Boyz-N-Da-Hood - Eazy-E - Dynamite Hack
You Can't Always Get What You Want - Rolling Stones - Band from TV
Lovesong - The Cure - Voltaire
Hurt - NIN - Johnny Cash (This has been recognized as one of the greatest covers EVER)
Gone Daddy Gone - Violent Femmes - Gnarls Barkley
Make You Feel My Love - Bob Dylan - Adele
Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper - Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
Come Out and Play - The Offspring - Richard Cheese

I've recently listened to Alarm Will Sound's acoustic styling of Cock/Ver 10 and was pleasantly surprised.

Buckley's cover is beautiful, but personally I prefer Rufus'. I've always loved his voice. And his cover of 'Across The Universe' is also rather stunning.

Van Canto do a Capella metal. They have covered Nightwish's Wishmaster, Metallica's Battery, Blind Guardian's The Bard Song, as well as doing some of their own stuff. Pretty interesting. Not may favorite covers or anything, but still good.
