Frankie Boyle. At least, I think he does stand up. Ed Byrne and Dara O'Briene are also good.
Dude! Have you ever seen Frankie Boyle live? Hes bloody awful XD He's great on mock the week, but don't judge the stand up 'till you've seen it.

Who do you think is/was the best stand-up?

My favorite has to be George Carlin. The man was a genious ahead of his time. His political satire and his rants about the problems in America, ranging from anorexia to religion to golf to suicide have brought a new way to see things. His unique form of humor created a whole new form of 'vulgar'.

A close second would be Lewis Black.

Who were your favorites?
Couldn't have said it better myself. They're my favorites too.

While he was definitely the best, Carlin's style of comedy was pioneered more by Lenny Bruce. Carlin even used some of his acts, improving them of course.

Bill Cosby was great in his day too. I still have some of his old records. Richard Pryor too.

As a NYer, I may have some lesser knowns on my favorites list.
Mike Britt
Vic Henley
Kurt Metzger

There are some great comedians from across the pond too:
Billy Connoly
Eddie Izzard

Oh, there's thousands of good ones...

Right now I'm listening to Patton Oswalt and his Werewolves and Lollipops CD.

Of all time my favorites are Brian Regan, Lewis Black, Tom Wilson (Biff from Back to the Future), George Carlin, and I'm still leaving out a bunch, but those are great ones.

I have to ask..

Why?

WHY?!
I'm confused? What do you mean why?
Asking a person why they like a comedian is like asking a person why they breath.
There is only one answer and it's obvious.
People breathe so they can live.
I like him because I think he's funny.
