Don't even think of blurting out "Revenge of the Search Bar", because I searched and the closest thing that came up died in May. What's your favorite story line from a video game? I know it's not very original, but I had to create this because I just finished Prototype, and the plot twists almost made me shit my pants. It's in my opinion, the best story line from a video game in history, at least that I can remember. My favorite parts were when
he discovers that the real Alex Mercer died, and that he's actually the virus in his form.

he discovers that the real Alex was the one who unleashed the virus on the city. That means, that in reality, the military was trying to shut down Gentek to stop the virus from getting out. That means that the real Alex Mercer was a villain, and the military were the good guys.
The ending was so heavy that, after the final soliloquy, I was too sick to my stomach to start another game.

KOTOR and I don't care what anyone says that also applies to the sequel. FANTASTIC story.

Mother 3. It's told very well, and if the final battle doesn't tug at your heartstrings, YOU HAVE NO SOUL.

The Halo Story.
Yes I know I've been beating this up for a while but there are some really great elements from a plot perspective. First of all I must mention the Covenant and how they are less evil and more deluded and being sent on a path of self destruction unknowingly and that there are those among them who question their motivations like, of course, the Arbiter who I hold up as a great character. There are quite a few referances to literature in the story as well like obvious religious metaphors... Covenant and the Ark and indeed the Flood (as an all consuming mass) for instance and there are a few things that seem similar to historic events like the Brutes taking the role of the barbarians in Rome taking over everything. Largely the Arbiter's side of the story was uncovering the truth and learning to accept it.
Then of course there is the human side fighting for survival and rellying on a man bred for war and nothing else who appears to have lost all humanity in the name of duty but still details a few things that make us human. Like a sense of humour for instance.
That's the last thing actually Halo has some heavy stuff going down but it still manages to deliver some nice moments of self parody and with a sense of humour, Cortana's lines, Srgt Johnson to everybody's favourite tiny alien scourge the Grunts.
I just like it.

Also I think the other story that obviously deserves mention is Bioshock... I won't waste time praising it as everyone here knows of it's greatness so I'll just say it's a work of writing genius. With powerful ideologies and philosophies, clashing with lifestyle changes and addictions and the downfall of a civilisation due to civil war causing all the great ideas founded by the city to be the thing that killed it. Combined with a journey of personal discovery and the pursuit of truth and of course the immersive quality that resides within it.
A masterpiece.

Finally Mass Effect just because it is pure epic sci fi gold that combines humour, romance, drama and personal conflict together and glues on some great epic scenes that scream sci fi beauty. And of course there is Wrex.

man, why didn't i start this thread? the story of a game is one of the most important things ever to me!

so, here we go:

-Hotel Dusk: Room 215 (this may be the best story in any game i've ever played)
-Golden Sun (both 1 and 2)
-Kingdom Hearts (Only 1 and CoM. personally, i feel that 2 can screw itself storywise)
-Tales of Phantasia
-the original .Hack games (all four)

Haven't played the first (I am shamed) but loved the second one.

I shall throw up Jade Empire. Loved the twisting story, and really need to go through it a few times to really piece it all together.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with anyone who said Prototype's story needed work. I though it was perfect, with insane plot twists.

inFAMOUS had a notably enjoyable, mostly off-the-wall plotline. That twist at the end was more confusing and astounding as opposed to annoying, but it was a slap to the face, now that I think about that. However, I think most any other storyline (with the exception of KOTOR) pales in front of Geneforge. Largely due to the fact that

There's another shaper on the island.

That was unexpected, and added this whole extra layer of liquid awesome onto the already existing story.

Final Fantasy Tactics. Sure, the screenplay and presentation were a bit awkward but the content it had was amazing. Rife with political corruption, manipulation, murder, betrayal, war, demonic forces, honor, and justice, it was a truly epic story. Not having an awkward love interest forced onto us was a nice bonus, too.
