Baldur's Gate. All of it.

Except Dark Alliance, that stuff's not really Baldur's Gate anyway.

KotOR as well. I just wish Obsidian hadn't been rushed to release KotOR2 so they could have finished it all up properly. If LucasArts had waited six months they could have had a far, far more polished game.

My first post here... :)

For me, one of the best storyline of a game has to be Vagrant Story by then Squaresoft (now Square Eenix). Storyline is set in the medieval era during, sort of like crusade-ish in nature with Knights + Magic.

What blew me away about the game is the level of scripting and writing that went into it. They actually got a writer who is extremely well versed in old and archaic English to do the translation from Japanese. I've yet to see the same level of commitment in other video games. Adds a whole new level of immersiveness to the game.

Personally, I loved the story of Fallout 3. Sorry to be so generic, but the thought of being tricked into thinking that you live in an underground vault that's been sealed for 200 years then discovering the truth when your dad escapes sounds like the storyline to a Hollywood movie.

Honourable mention to the original 2 fallouts but I think I'll have to go with assassin's creed since bioshock has already been said.

Final Fantasy X

It may seem like a cliche' story about a kid lost in a strange world trying to get home for the first part of the game, but things really get interesting towards the end.

The Path? I also love the good 'ol original Final Fantasy. So simple and ridiculous, but...
Ok, I'll admit it: the end makes me tear up every time!
I love that game, so much, its like a culmination of all the remaining scraps of impossible hope (that kind that only innocent children hold) in me welling up.
I miss being a little girl...

I want to say Uncharted but that would be wrong because it's not the best storyline but it is by far the best presented game story of all time.

it's a tie between mass effect, which reeks of 30 year old nerd stink at one point in the story, but everything else is pretty well done, and Metal Gear Solid 4 because it's very well written but smells of 15 year old nerd stink at a couple parts of the story. As far as i know there really is no great story plots, there are good but they tend to be nerdish at parts and i can't help but notice it.

err. fourthed I suppose.

I'd just say Baldur's Gate II (as a runner up to KoToR). The original was a fun game, but the story wasnt all that deep, and the expansion pack (Throne of Baal) was basically just the Highlander movies in a fantasy setting.
Baldur's Gate II was totally awesome because it wasn't really your story - it was Jon Irenicus's and you were kind of the antagonist/foil to his character, showing up to ruin his plans and disrupt his plotline.

shadow of the colossus. few characters. little dialogue. but somehow they managed to make the characters matter to me. i almost shed a tear twice in that game.

I didn`t see the plot twists coming in Bioshock so that qualifies that .

I really liked the story and universe of the elder scroll series.

Fallout 3 could have been so much more but it disappointed me near the end - story wise.

EDIT : Why do you guys talk bad of KOTOR 2 ? In my opinion it was an above decent game from all points of view.

To an extent I agree, but there was still a lot of focus on your story and the Child of Bhaal. Once you got halfway through the second half of the first game, you could almost say the same thing for Baldur's Gate 1 and Sarevok though. Admittedly the start was more based around the main character, but once you reached the Nashkel mines the focus started to shift.

I hold up Baldur's Gate (one and two) not only because of the main story, but also because of the many well written - and often humourous - sidequests it gave you. Some of Nalia's dialogue for her personalised sidequest was really well voice acted I thought which added a lot to it.

My favorite Video game Stories would be the Final Fantasy VII story and the Kingdom Hearts 1 story line. The story for Final fantasy sucked you in at the start and it showed parts where you needed to rebel from the Control system. and Kingdom Hearts 1 is for how well they made A disney game that interacted with A final fantasy Real time strategy. Also it showed how Mickey was the true king By going around to actually save the worlds instead of just sitting around on his chair like the normal king would do.

Resident evil 5
Epic Fail-^

Resident Evil 4 had the best story of all of the RE games, RE2 was the second best.

Silent Hill 2 also had a fantastic story.

Resident Evil 5 kinda took a step back in the Resident Evil storyline.

1) Minsc remains the greatest companion I have ever had in any game ever. +2 points for you.
2) Maybe I'll play through it again, but I remember BGI as kinda hollow until you finally arrived in Baldur's Gate (the city) and by that point I was already like 80% done the game. Not that it was a bad story, not at all, but I dont think I'd put it in my top tier.
3) Yea, BG2 wasn't ALL about Irenicus, but most of the best stuff was. And all the good sidequests were about the various side-characters. The plots worked really well by not making the player character the singular focus.
