Another vote for Dead Rising. I have had that game for about a while now, but every time I play it, I end up just killing things. My favorite is the auger or tree trimmer.

Ho boy. I played that game's single player all the way through for the first time this year - loved it, by the way - and I hated those things. They scared me shitless the first time I saw them, in that room with the scientists "climbing" up the "rope". The crazy thing is, I thought it really was a rope and went over to it. I started getting jerked up automatically and thought "Hey, what's going o-" and then looked up. I panicked and went nuts with the crowbar. It's that jerking that still creeps me out. In short, it kicks arse.

On a lighter note, though, I loved using the rocket launcher in GTA 2. This was back when the series had a birdseye perspective, so when you managed to land a shot with the weapon on one guy, you felt pretty special. Especially when they get blasted into the air at top speed, and their flailing bodies fly right up to the birdseye camera and back down again to squish on the pavement. Absolutely hilarious the first time I saw it. Also, in the same game, getting "Raspberry Ripple!" bonus from that announcer when you run guys over in an ice-cream truck was great.

Best death ever, huh? Jeez, that's a tough one.

Oh, I know! In mass effect, when you use the chemical rounds on people. They melt into green. I remember the first time I saw this, I was like "awesome...".

The Zelda chicken death is classic.

My favorite way to kill, though, is definitely swording some sucker in 'Lo 3. It just never gets old.

RE4 had some awesome deaths, you ever get chainsawed? Seeing it makes you wanna see it just one more time. You'll never lose track of a chainsaw Ganados again.

anyone remember the old bungie games, Myth and Myth 2? that game was full of satisfactory deaths. those sadistic dwarven sappers, with grenades taking out masses of undead in hilariously over the top fashion.

All of my favorite deaths have already been listed, but I do have one particular favorite when it comes to, while not neccessarily deaths, but Game Overs in general.

I am a large fan of the Shin Megami Tensei series of RPGs--which, unfortunately, most of the world has never heard of. Never the less, these are these odd sort of dark, gruesome and most of all SOPHISTICATED JRPGs that feature some of the nicest Game Overs...ever.

Effectively, in the flagship title of the series, you will die many times. Often very cheaply, as the game is EXTRODINARILLY HARD to people bred on FFVII (which, for the most part, I was.). But, when you die, instead of getting just a sad little red-letter game over sign, you get a little cineamatic of your character's corpse lying in a white field, with a spiral of angels wearing bondage gear circling over your head like vultures, and a little poem that scrolls across the screen that basically tells you "It's ok. Everybody dies. God makes it so." which is not only surprisingly relaxing, but is also, for a bonus, blasphemous, as death is blamed solely upon God (who, in the SMT series, is in fact the Judeo-Christian angry talking head God, as opposed to any particularly other one.).

All of the SMT games have little cinematics for every game over, which makes it almost a treat to die in one, just to see what happens.

I'd also have to agree with some of the CS kills. You can die so easily, so a No0b to the game (like me) would have to be real cautious. But killing someone gives a great deal of satisfaction. I'm used to the shottie, but I love getting an enemy from behind. If they don't die in about a second their either *turn, BLAM I'm dead*, or *WTF? BLAM they're dead*.

I do particularly like the latter >:3

Norm the intern at PC Magazine (now the FPS guy I think) played the guy who goes by Fatal1ty (Jonathan Wendel?) and lost ten straight deathmatches, but the last round Fatal1ty actually beat him to death with the flashlight. Nothing says owned like being beaten to death with a flashlight when you're armed with a shotgun or assault rifle.

Another way I love to kill -

Back when I played Star Ocean 3 I remember I got a scroll for one of Fayt's secret moves.
It kicked ASS. I forgot the name, but basically, Fayt rises up in the air, arms out. Golden angelic wings appear behind him, as a ball of energy begins to build. He then thrusts his arms forwards, shooting a huge beam of light (and awesomeness!) at the enemy.

Pity it was hard to hit the enemy with it.

My personal favorite is to lure the stupid badguys in "random FPS" game close enough to the explosive barrels to finnish of 3 or 4 guys in on pistol shot :)

Best ways to kill were in Bloodrayne 2. A favourite is the one where she does a roundhouse kick that ends up with her opponents' head cradled in her knee joint, then she leans on him and takes him down to the ground using her body weight while slicing off his head with the blade on the free hand, then coming back up to standing position with a backwards flip. Another one is the one where she skewers the guy with one blade, then lifts him up and spins him around using the other blade to provide the forward momentum, then keeping that blade a certain distance from the rotating body to slice off various limbs. And then there's the from-behind fatality where she spins around and dices the opponent into tetris blocks while somersaulting... what a great game. With fatality moves that cool, I can forgive the shabbiest of gameplay elements.

Best way to die was in the original Forbidden Forest, when that final invisible boss guy came. He'd get closer and closer, and when that.... thing... descended, I'd shit my pants. Visually rough-as-guts even for its day, but perfectly atmospheric. The closest a game has ever gotten to the less-is-more approach to death that is seen in psychological-horror films. That game gave me nightmares for years.

Fallout 1 and 2 for both killing and being killed. Bloody Mess?

Will also mention Beneath A Steel Sky for watching someone get shot in half by an energy-pulse-firing-giant-eyeball security camera.

The best way to kill a guy (or multiple guys in this case) that I've ever come across was in the very first Playstation game I ever owned, Spawn. In this game (which was quite awful in general) you could tear the arm off one enemy and beat his buddy to death with it. So, you tear an arm off one guy who bleeds to death then beat the other guy to death with said arm.

Best death was as a medic in TF2 after healing a pyro for some time. He turned and gave me a big thumbs up and a "Thanks!" before walking over, dropping his disguise, and killing me.
Hahahaha, I've done that before, I love it!

Just played Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and gotta say I love hanging from a pipe and grabbing someone.

I have to say I'm a bit annoyed, personally, at the obsession in Halo over traffic cone kills and such. If you had played a game called Half-Life 2 Deathmatch that would be the BEST way of killing someone.

Nasty deaths make games worth playing! I still have lovely memories of dark platform games, running for your life in abes odyssey and the resulting death if you mistimed a jump under a meat slicer. Exploding gibs and meaty remains! I still miss the gibs from quake to all these "realistic" character models.

However to the topic at hand, the best deaths I have delt and have been delivered has been in MMOs, namely the unusal happenings when one randomly comes across another lone enemy in the open world.

(in the game neocron back in 2001)
My best kill was when I got revenge on someone who had ganked me many times, the feeling of sweet revenge is awesome that its a main reason you play PvP hoping to find again. On the other hand my best death was planned assualts on player controlled outposts, when you play a game with so much to gain from winning and so much to loose from dying, every death leaves you out of breath and fighting for the last hit point. Its humorous that in a game made of numbers, nothing seems so deadly real and thrilling!

Carmageddon Anyone? 1 and 2 are both excellent. Silent Hill also had a few scary deaths throughout the series. Sneaking up on guards in MGS is alwasy satisfying, as is hitting cars head on in Saints Row and watching the bodies fly through the windscreen. Does anyone remember the game "Thrill Kill" on the PS? That had some really nasty deaths in, and I think it was banned in Britain. There are plenty more but I can't think at the moment.
