1. Planescape: Torment
2. Ultima IV-VII + Martian Dreams/Savage Empire
3. Fallout 1-3 + New Vegas
4. Baldur's Gate 1-2
5. Mass Effect 1-3
6. Elder Scrolls: II-V
7. Mask of the Betrayer

There's some essential WRPGs. HM's to KOTOR, Dragon Age, Wizardry, Gothic, Wasteland, Bard's Tale 1-3, Witcher 1-2 and all 97,000 Might and Magic games. But I think as long as you sample the above 7, you can lay claim to a fairly well rounded WRPG experience.

Curt nod as well towards some of the essential RPG hybrids, like Deus Ex and System Shock.

Does WoW count? if so that, 7 years in the game and its still one of my favorites... dont judge me!

If not, then its either Deus Ex Human Revolution (cant speak for the series in general as I never played the other games) or Oblivion, Skyrim is good but for some reason didnt grip me in the same way,

I loved it to be sure but when oblivion could grip me for over 100 hours on one character not counting others, but skyrim ive only put in a comparitvly small 40 hours on the only character I made and dont really have much inclination to play it anymore these days its clear which drew me in more

I think Planescape Torment is probably the best WRPG of all time, but in terms of my favorites (maximum enjoyment), this list is

1. Baldur's Gate 2
2. Arcanum
3. Planescape Torment
4. Mass Effect
5. Deus Ex Human Revolution (I enjoyed HR more than the original, though I'll admit the first was a better game)

It's too hard to pick a single game, but for my favorite wRPG series Fallout is an easy choice.

Too hard to choose... so many worlds built and destroyed, so much ambiance from each.

For pulp sci-fi, I say Fallout. Any less than all of 1, 2 and New Vegas is less than the whole experience.

D&D-inspired RPGs... Icewind Dale 1 and 2. Blasphemy, I know, but I had a bit more fun with them than Baldur's Gate (which was also awesome). Never got into Planescape, something about a barrier to entry... and Neverwinter Nights was a fun playground, but something about it rubbed me the wrong way the whole time.

In no particular order, KotOR, KotOR II, Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3, Alpha Protocol, and Dragon Age (Origins definitely, I'll leave 2 up to your discretion).

The thing about Obsidian's games (KotOR II, Alpha Protocol) is that while there may be some glitchiness on the gameplay level, the characters and the story quality are THROUGH THE ROOF.

I'm not sure if you mean Western RPG style wise or place of Origin wise.

But these are my favourite RPGs of all time, and I generally don't like JRPGS that are in any way like final Fantasy or the like (You know the games I mean)

-Baldur's Gate 2
-Fallout 3
-Mass Effect 2

...and I honestly can't think of any other RPGs that do what makes these games so good better than these 3 do (Does that sentence even make sense?).

I've played a lot more JRPGs than I have western, but I'm starting to get into them more. At this point not sure what my favorite is. What's yours?
Planescape: Torment - One of the best games ever made. Almost as good as Xenogears (the best game ever made).

Or possibly the Mass Effect series as a whole.

My favorite would probably be the Elder scrolls series.

It has such batshit crazy and unique lore that boggles the mind how they come up with it.
.
.
.
All the gods are dead, schizophrenic, have multiple personality disorder were each personality became its own sentient being that fights its other personalities.

The god-king Vivec is a magical hermaphrodite that exists in multiple parallel universes and who is part of a tribunal of god-kings that are each each others mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and themselves.

There's time traveling war-fractals from the future, emperors who build spaceships to colonize the moon, gods who are reincarnations of other gods, gods who are also other gods.

Akatosh = Lorkhan = Sithis = Talos = Tiber Septim = Yismir Wulfharth = Martin Septim = The Divine crusader = The Champion of cyrdoil = The Dragonborn = the nerevarine = Sheogorath

And i didnt make up that list of equality, seriously all those people are the same being.

there are lizard people who evolved from trees

The list of stuff goes on on weirdness.

Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout 3, Mass Effect series, and the Witcher 2.

My favorite would have to be Skyrim.
