Ah playing Left 4 Dead on (No Mercy) expert go the first two maps with no tanks or witches. So it was quiet on the third map so we start rushing at the start with in 10 steps we had a tank, then a witch then 2 more tanks. We were all "WTF!!!! RAGE QUIT!!!!" we made it trough but i was the only one cause i got lucky. Then we boned with 2 tanks on the next map. then the final map was just a breeze till the tank spawned under the choppa and punched all of us off the building. We were still "WTF!!!" it took us 12 tries to beat the last level were only one got it and it was not me.

The Flood in Halo 1, anyone?
this
First time I played thru Halo, I played the first 5 levels co-op with a friend.
Got to level 6, and he had to go, shut it off for the night. Home from work the next day, and my friend couldn't come over, so I was about to play level 6 by myself when a different friend wanted to come over and check out the new hotness (xbox and Halo had just released the day before).
"Whats the game like?" He asked as I booted it up and handed him the enormous original xbox controller.
"FPS, like Goldeneye but with tighter controls. On some alien ring-world, the environments are amazing [note: i had last played the 5th level, which is one of the greatest levels in gaming history], and the enemies are a few different types of alien races, some conglomerate called The Covenant - they've declared holy war on humanity." Was more or less my answer.
"Ah, " he said, "Religious war. Good, I figured if you liked the game this much it had to be about zombies."
"Nope. No zombies at all in this one."
And so, we start playing level 6. Halfway thru, working thru the structure we find in the swamp, and we come across a marine. Take his memory chip, and watch the footage from his helmet cam ...
Some fucked up alien parasite.
Thousands of them.
swarming everywhere.
Attacking -
Killing -
Infecting -
and then RE-ANIMATING the marines!

"What the Fucks?!?!?!" I screamed as the cut scene ended, and the ominous music started. "No one told me there were zombies! No one told me there were zombies!!! AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!"
I screamed the whole time the little Flood guys attacked, and when I saw the big ones that had been marines ...

Great twist.

Playing the first Halo really got me when the Flood first appeared. Just when i had gotten the hang of dealing with all the grunts, brutes, and other assorted Covenant these little assholes show up. I seriously said, "What the fuck are these things!?".

There aren't Brutes in Halo: Combat Evolved; they were introduced in Halo 2 - unimportant canonical detail.

Though admittedly, I had a similar experience with the little buggers. The level they were introduced in felt like an obvious set up for some sort of horror shenanigans, so I was expecting some sort of demonic entity. I was actually quite surprised to see the spores and zombifications; they didn't seem nearly as threatening as what I had imagined I would meet.
Yep, your right. I was thinking of the elites. It's been a while since I've played the games. I need to brush up on my Master Chief mythology. :p

That worm thing in Lost Planet
Fallout 3 Behemoths

But my biggest WTF moment was fighting the Aigon in Ace Combat 6
For those who havnt seen it it is basically a giant runway that can fly, hold about 30 ships and its crew, and any where between 20-30 cruise missles, and it can fly through the air, and there are 5 of them.

Another vote for Shadow of the Colossus.
For comedic effect, numerous enemies in Half Minute Hero (whoever thought that game up needs a huge raise). Mostly because the battles occur so fast that half the time I can't really tell what I'm killing (or running into). I swear that in level 3 I was killing something that looked like tumbleweeds, and they were critical hitting me for like, 20% of my HP! And then there were the crabs (or what looked like crabs, didn't have time to count the number of limbs).

Zombies in Half Life had me thinking this in confusion.

The Behemoth had me thinking it in dread, like "I've got to kill THAT???"

And the Fast Zombies in Half Life 2 had me thinking it in absolute, mind-soaking terror. "Sweet Jesus! What do I do? WhatdoIdo?WhatdoIdo?WhatdoIdowhatdoIdowhatdoIdo... They're RIGHT HERE!!!" *bang bang bang* *swipe* *dead* *reload game*

The most pure WTF moment I've ever seen in a game was when I killed off a slutty Sim in Sims 2 by making her die in a fire, and after the Grim Reaper collected her ashes he stopped on the toilet on his way out...and sat down.

Death droppin' a deuce. Yep. We have a winner.
