Wow, is 1997 already classic? You just made me feel really (really) old. Am I allowed to answer with games that came in monochrome green variety or is this strictly 90s games?
A classic game can now be released in 2008 - 'classic' doesn't have a time limit like 'antique' does. :)

No way I could pick just one. The Guardian Legend and Blaster Master on the NES were awesome and are still fun to this day. Earthbound on the SNES is probably one of the best games ever made.

Classic can also mean typical. So the word classic doesn't mean anything in context of quality or lasting appeal if you want. Vintage is, another label (,like classic,) that gets slapped on anything- utterly useless as a descriptor.

All of my early PC experiences were RTS's so my fondest memories are of Age of Empires, WarcraftI and II, Starcraft, Command & Conquer/Red Alert and the like. Somehow I completely missed Total Annihilation and Civilization and never picked those up until years after they were released.

I think my absolute favorite classic was Command and Conquer because I played it forever including the expansion pack. I probably played Red Alert for longer because I loved the skirmishes and modding it but my memories of playing it aren't quite as vivid as original C&C.

Oh man, going back into the past here. Fallout was legendary, that's one of my favourites. And then pretty much any adventure game made by Sierra Online and LucasArts, with big props going to the Simon the Sorceror games and also Beneath a Steel Sky.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Dunno if it's considered a "classic", but as far as gamers are concerned-- it's hella old. And that counts for something.

star fox on snes. one of the first polygon-based 3d console games. in fact i think the first
also yes, kirby's dreamland on GB, tho thats hardly classic yet. maybe kirby's adventure on NES.
all time classic - myst. just as compelling now as it was when it was first lifted from its disk-case and demanded 30 megabytes of harddive space. 30 meg! christ

Kid Icarus. Why of all the games from the NES era, this one did not garner a franchise the way Mario, Metroid and Zelda did baffles me.

And if we can go even futher back, Moonsweeper for the Atari VCS. Impressive pseudo 3D for that beast.
I completely agree. Kid Icarus was better and more interesting than Metroid and only had one sequel on the GameBoy.

Personally, my favourite classic would have to be Contra.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 probably was one of the games I owned that I played the most. I did play Toejam & Earl a lot with my dad, though.

But, ultimately, I think that my most favorite game from my youth was Dynamite Headdy, despite its ungodly difficulty.

Im just curious what you consider is your most favourate 'Classic' game you have completed. For Example my choice is REALMS OF THE HAUNTING. this one came out in 1997 from Gremlin studios.

It was basically one of those point and click adventure games that evolved into WASD movement.
Problem is, how do you define a 'classic'?

But mine would be Broken Sword: Knight's Templer. I'm pretty sure we could all agree that's a classic?
