I'll put the ones I've played in order from best to worst:

VIII, IX, X, VII, VI, III (Enix Version), XII, XI

I'm not planning on playing XIII, and I'm going to assassinate the head of Square Enix before they release XIV.

VI seems to be getting a lot of love. I didn't find it that good, but I didn't play much of it, found the start kinda boring. And I'm stuck on some dude in some mountain.
I'll have to give it another go sometime.

Final Fantasy 5. I was the first one I played, so it's always special in some way. A close second would be FFX.

A friend of mine once said to me that most people likes the first FF they played... I fit that rule, since the first one I tried was FF VIII and it is my favourite

7, Tactics, 10, 12... I like all of them honestly (still not too sure about 13) but those four are my top picks. 12 really appealed to the part of me that loves huge open worlds. 7 and 10 had amazing stories (7 got me into FF, 10 made me love it) and Tactics was one of the deepest, most rewarding games I've ever played. 6 is ok but nothing amazing.

Final Fantasy X. Why? The story, characters, settings and music resonated in me. I don't know how else to describe it.

I like both 7 and 8 for differing reasons, although the one reason they both share is the fact that the story has an incredible amount of mind fuckery if you have a good memory and pay close enough attention.

In FF7, almost no one can stand Cloud because the first ten hours of the game he acts all tough guy in a way that makes even the most emo of emo kids want to scream in frustration. It's actually because Cloud was a total wimp before the game started. He set out for Midgar to become a member of S.O.L.D.I.E.R., but ended up being swept into the ranks of the standing Shinra Army and is unable to advance far enough to attain his dream. Simply by virtue of being there when Sephiroth was killed, Cloud is inducted into a program to try and clone a new Sephiroth. He ends up being declared a failed experiment, promptly getting his ass dumped off at a train station where a chance encounter places him with Tifa and Barret a day or so before the game actually starts.

The first ten hours of his dialogue is mind numbingly horrible and it makes your eyes bleed just reading the text. You're supposed to think he's a total poser, because that's what he actually is. He's a wimp that is taking advantage of his new found strength and agility to play out the tough guy fantasies he dreamed about as a child. That's why everyone hates him, and that's why I love him. His character isn't shallow at all, in spite of all the naysayers who say he is.

I liked Squall in FF8 a lot less, although the reason I liked FF8 has more to do with the story itself as opposed to the characters in it. The end game boss is doing everything in her power to destroy the world in order to prevent the main characters from coming and killing her. As a result of this, her eventual defeat ends up creating the SeeD mercenary force, whose sole reason for existence is to combat the Sorceress and prevent the end of the world. Far off in the distant future, the SeeD mercenary forces she inadvertently created hound her and persecute her, eventually leading her younger self to the conclusion that the only way to escape them is to destroy the world and everything in it.

It's pretty sad if you can actually get your head around all of the details and somehow manage to understand wtf just happened.

Just to recap: The Sorceress, Big Bad of FF8, tries to destroy the world to escape SeeD. SeeD defeats her. During time compression, the main character goes back into the past and plants the idea of SeeD in the head of SeeD's founder. SeeD is founded with the purpose of defeating the Sorceress. Centuries ahead of present day, future SeeD members persecute a younger version of the Sorceress because fighting her is the reason they exist. Sorceress grows up being persecuted by SeeD and, fearing they would eventually succeed in killing her, tries to destroy the world and everyone in it using time compression so that she may escape SeeD and live on. Wash, rinse, repeat.

For me the order goes 9, 7, 11, tactics, 10, 8, 13, 12

9 has a good storyline and great characters, also each character having their own specific traits was brilliant, however it did leave some characters being rather pointless (Amarant).

7 is a classic even though people don't enjoy it. It was the first final fantasy game I played and it is brilliant. Materia system was awesome and the villain was brilliant. Cloud as a main character though was a bit lame, but you had Cid, Red XIII and Vincent, what more could you ask for.

11 is a good MMORPG and I lost actual days due to playing it (Playtime is approximately 19 days). The only issue was that the levelling up system was really really long, and most people had not patience for it and played WoW instead (the fools).

Tactics is highly addictive, due to the amount of classes and sub-classes you could have, as well as having a very strategic battle system.

10 was a good crossover from PS1 to PS2. The sphere grid is a brilliant system if you could master it. Also, Blitzball is the best side-game in any final fantasy series. But I did the voice acting in it, it was terrible.

I really didn't enjoy 8. I thought the storyline had too many issues and the junction system isn't as great as everyone says. Why would you make a system where you could junction a spell to your health, but you couldn't use it because your health will decrease.

13's graphics are brilliant, but you don't buy a game because it has good graphics. The storyline is clever, but the idea of running on the same path through the game is rubbish. The past games were free-roam so why not this one and yes I know you can reach a free roam area, but why wait until near the end of the game.

12 is possibly one of the worst games I have ever played. The free roam system had issues, and the gambit system was appalling. This game made me lose faith in the franchise.

Anyway that's my order and I know people will disagree, but that is my opinion

That is one of a few reasons why I like FF X out of all the ones I've played. (VII to X-2 + XIII)

Plus, I love the story, love the setting which is just beautiful, love all the characters, yes even Tidus and the stuff you can do in it as well like finding Celestial Weapons, killing all the Dark Aeons which I have yet to do and of course, Blitzball.

FFX. It's a little more to the point, in my opinion, the storyline's a lot more fetching than it's previous installments back to FFVII, and I find it to be all round the best Final Fantasy game. In fact, it's the only Final Fantasy game I've ever liked. VII takes too long getting around to anything, VIII is just... absurd in all ways, and has a host of unlikeable characters, and XII is so damn brown and mediocre. I haven't played any of the others, but the sampling tells me I probably won't like IX or XIII. I'm curious about trying the old-school ones sometime, though. Maybe they're better.

I have to go with FF2. I got into all of the characters more than any of the others. Not counting Aeris, but I don't like to speak about that. All Im going to stay is I stopped playing for over a month. Even still 7 and 3 are a close second.

9 is my favorite for characters an storyline. And music. And the combat.
Next is Tactics.
And my least favorite is 8. I know you didn't ask, but I don't care, that game was crap.

I'm gonna say it's a toss up between the Original, IV, V and VI...

I really enjoy the original and play it from time to time. It was simple but fun.

My real problem is choosing between the SNES ones, because those were (for me) the last great Final Fantasy games. The new ones lack something, and have lacked it since FF7. Perhaps it is the level of polish the 2-D ones seemed to have, or how they put less focus in the graphics and more on making everything else the best it could be. I don't really know.

All I do know is that IV has a special place in my heart because it was the first RPG I played on the SNES and I love the music and characters so much. The storyline was a bit cliched, but it had plenty of unique aspects to it.

I do know V is hard to justify because it came out later so I don't have as many fond memories as I do for IV and VI, but I do know I thought it was huge with having 3 worlds, fully customizable characters, and so forth.

I guess if I have to sit down and choose one, though, it'd be VI. The best written FF hands down, with memorable characters, a gripping plot, arguable the best villain and a soundtrack that stayed with me ever since I played it.

Granted I'm not saying as much as others because I hesitate to go into this stuff. Mainly cause it makes me clash with some of the newer fans.

EDIT: I will say one thing. I don't really like topics like this because I find myself wanting to question a lot of what I see said, and I don't wanna do that in here. I probably won't reply again in here either as a result. I will say that the opinions of what kinds of FF games and why, will most likely usually draw the line between the 3-D ones (often starting with 7) and the 2-D ones (typically going with 6). Personally, I also liked 8 because it was a romantic story and we don't get that enough in games.
