District 13. It's in French, it counts.

Sure it isn't an artsy-intelligent film, but that's made up with the awesomely-awesome stunts.

*babbles incoherently*

EDIT: damn.

hmmm... I guess I liked Amelie... I remember is watching in french gcse and the "quinze orgasmes" bit, that was funny.

Actually no, there was a korean one or something with a huge mutated fish or something that terrorised the waterfront... no idea what the name is... funny, weird and awesome film though.

Mine is either western The Good, The Bad, The Weird (Korea) or horror(?)Pan's Labirynth (Italian)
I'm almost positive Pans Labyrinth is in Spanish.

Anyways, mine goes to The Devil's Backbone by the same director and Everything is Illuminated.

But that last one may be only "half foreign", but an amazing film none the the less.

By jove you're right. Who told me it was Italian...? Nevermind, yeah I'll change that.

Jean de Florette was amazing and when I found out that the teacher was showing Manon des Sources and I missed the first fourth due to be late, I raged so hard.
ahh...French class. Good times. Then came French 3. Bad times.

OT: Pan's Labyrinth was really good. Call it over-rated, but I saw it theaters and it looked fantastic on that big screen.

For me, it's got to be The Russian Ark simply because of the way it was made. For those that don't know it, there are no cuts throughout the running time. It's one, single 90-minute take. Throw in roughly 300 years of Russian history, a couple of thousand extras and a brilliantly eccentric performance from Sergei Dreiden and you've got what I consider to be the most beautiful film of the last decade!

I'm with you on that. Also Princess Mononke, if Studio Ghibli films count.

Some that come to mind:

- I watched "Ex Drummer" a while back, which was sick (sick as in twisted, not as in awesome), but funny in a very disturbed way (ever seen a movie in which everyone is a twisted asshole without redeeming qualities?). I wouldn't rank it among my favorites to be honest, just mentioning it since I saw it recently.
- "Shichinin no Samurai" is a classic, and for good reason. It's not too much of a stretch to say that every modern action movie owes a little something to this one.
- As people have said before, "Der Untergang" is awesome. Humanizing a globally hated figure like Hitler without making his actions look any better than they were is an impressive feat.
- Also mentioned before is Ingmar Bergman, the most famous of his movies being "Det Sjunde Inseglet". If you can stand the rather slow pace (it's no action movie), you have no excuse not to see this one.
- "La Vita e Bella" is just amazing. A lot of emotion in what seems like a very light-hearted (some say too light-hearted) movie at first glance.
- "Oldboy" is awesome. You have to see this one to know just how awesome. Really.
- The "Mou Gaan Dou" trilogy, better known as "Infernal Affairs" (or "The Departed") to most, is just so much better than the English-language ripoff remake in every possible way (if you don't mind subtitles).
- "John Rabe" was very impressive. Think "Shindler's List," but set in China.

Probably Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker. Entirely in Russian, it is a fascinating movie to watch and captures the strange nature of the Zone. It's ccertainly not a movie that you whack on after a long day and need some background noise. It's a movie you have to sit down and watch from start to finish (Yep, all 163 minutes of it) because it makes you think about human nature.

One of the things about Stalker that is so amazing is the way it draws you in. There are moments when you are filled with wonder and curiosity and others when you are filled with pure fear. It does this even though there are no special effects what so ever apart from maybe the odd smoke machinge. The fact that it can achieve this when you don't understand what's being said without subtitles proves that the whole atmosphere of the movie is created absolutley perfectly.

And I've just found the whole thing on Google Video :)

And yes, this is the movie that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl is partialy based on. So much of the movie can be found in the game and vice versa.

I loved Der Untergang, or Downfall. It's about Germany's last days, in Hitler's bunker. You've seen clips where "HITLER MAD AT CAR STOLEN LOL" or "NO XBOX LIVE FOR HITLER LOLOLOL". That's from this movie.

Also, Pan's Labyrinth was great. I wasn't a fan of Lola Rennt (run Lola run). Not that good in my opinion.

I saw some film on Film4 not so long ago, it was about these two guys who go into people's houses who they don't like for whatever reasons and rather than steal anything, they just move all the furniture round into bizarre positions and leave a little note warning them, can't remember what it was called though. Quite enjoyed it too.

If you haven't seen that film, you're doing yourself a disservice. A close second would be City of God, which is an excellent film in every way.

I watched Children of Men with subtitles. Does that count?

In a different language however I'd have to say Pan's Labyrinth since I could actually understand it.

An Irish movie called 'A film with me in it' it has Dylan Moran and is build up funny. If you want to see someone killed with a clarinet stand then this is your movie.
Hah! That's the weapon I'll use if a robber or something comes in my room, and I need to beat him down.

OP: I'd say La Haine, City of God or Zatoichi. I'm really tired right now so I can't even think of any foreign films. Meh, I'll leave this thread with a scene from Zatoichi.

I am going to take the chumps way out. Taken is technically a French film so yeah Taken, with all of its Liam Neeson-brand badass.
