The beginning of Bioshock is one of, if not the, absolute best introductions of any game this generation. It does an excellent job of setting up the games' tone and mood and establishes its setting, story, and some of the themes it's going to explore right in the first ten or fifteen minutes.
Sorry, I'm replaying through it now and failing to remember exactly why I never claimed it was a great game. Maybe when I get to that fucking camera or do the umpteenth fucking fetch quest I'll remember, but until then I'll blissfully ignore my previous thoughts and roll my eyes at the damned hacking minigame.
Quoted for truth.
Also, I'm replaying the game right now, and I have to say, it's MUCH shorter if you use the New Game+ feature. Since Plasmids, weapons, and items carry over, you can skip a surprising amount of the side quests. For example, Medical becomes a pretty straight shot to the boss when you don't have to go get Telekinesis, and if you collected enough components in your first run, you can skip the entire Farmer's Market section when you're making the Lazarus Vector.
Plus, experience from photos carries over too, so you don't have to do that anymore, either. And, since you'll be basically tripping over money (since you'll have so much ammo to start with), you can just buyout any hack instead of the minigame.
