Ok I know jrpg's get a lot of flack on this site but I still love em' so who's your favourite playable character and why?

My personal faves are Balthier from ff12 (great game btw) and Squall from ff8. Honourable mention to most of the characters from Persona 4 for actually having non cliched personalities and interesting back stories.

Eh, only one that wants to come to mind right now is Recette. She is just sooo cuuuteee!
Of course, there is also Rufus Shinra from FF7, but he isn't playable...
So Recette it is

Cloud from FF7 (The fact that you could use his final limit break on the final boss regardless of whether you have it or not is pretty damn awesome.)

Vivi and Quina from FF9 (Along with being a great character, the former also has a cool trance form. The latter has the most entertaining way to acquire blue magic.)

Cecil from FF4 DS (Seriously, he becomes an absolute beast if you give him the right augments.)

Frog from Chrono Trigger (Great character, and has access to some awesome duel techs with Crono in the party.)

Great question!

Aya Brea from Parasite Eve. (Third Birthday in only three months!)
Harlie from Chrono Cross.
Aeris and Tifa from FF7.
Yuna from FF X and FF X-2.

... and Vanielle and Fang from FF 13, I guess. Did anyone else think there was a little more to their relationship than was shown? The subtext always felt a little... something.

In no particular order...

Cliff from Star Ocean: Till End of Time. The dude's badass. Lasers? Bombs? Swords? F that. He'll just punch it... and it breaks.
Albel was pretty wicked too. Most of the playable cast was, in fact...

The entire cast of FFVI. Every single one of them is a great character with something to contribute. (yes, even Umaro, Relm, and Gau.)

Luigi in the Paper Mario series. (shut up, it counts)

Robo from Chrono Trigger. Yeah, Chrono's the main dude, yeah Frog's the badass swordsman, but... chicks dig giant robots. heh.
Also Lucca and Ayla, they both had some great... moves. heh.

Isaac from Golden Sun. "Isaac's Sol Blade unleashed Meggido!" 'nuff said.

Jaster, Zegram, and Steve from Rogue Galaxy.

Dart, Lavitz, and Rose from Legend of Dragoon. The rest were fun too, but these three... damn.

Edit: I forgot all about Jack Russel from Radiata Stories. Who else searches things by kicking them?

I'm guessing it counts if they are in your party and you can control them. Oka then:

1) Nameless Protagonist of Persona 3/Persona 3 fes (his name in the anime is Minato Arisato).
He gets to use all the Personae, and can use any weapon set, as well as gets the skill links. This means you could design a full on SP sweeping force, or a life draining tank, or a supporter or all around player.
2) Yukiko Amagi of Persona 4
I think she's my favorite team mate out of all the Persona games, cause she's a SP attacker, a great supporter, and all around awesome. She's a constant party member.
3) Aya Brea of Parasite Eve
Its nice to see a female Protagonist that isnt sex appeal, is dimensional and actually has a sense of being more then eye candy.
4) The Javelin Robo of Custom Robo (GC)
I dontk now why really, I just really like it. Its one of those little obscure games (at least in the states) that was on the Game cube, but I really enjoyed it. And the Javelin Robo was amazing. With it, Satelite pods, flame gun, and wall bomb, I was unstoppable.
5) The Camera Man of Michigan: Report for Hell
This is probably an iffy thing, since its a survival Horror game, but there's choice mechanics in the game that could make it an RPG. I just liked it for its difference really.

My absolute favorite has to go to this Guy.

Why? Because he took every single-handedly known stereotype and J-RPG cliche for a hero, slit its throat and left it to die in a back alley on the dark side of mars.

Ryu from the first Breath of Fire. If things got heavy, you could just turn into a big damn dragon.
